I just don't understand! I market and sell my products to gay people, and their money keeps me in business and earns my living. But when I use that money to fund efforts to take away their rights, they seem to get so upset. It doesn't make any sense.

"Yes on Prop. 8" supporters grow impatient with gay marriage demonstrators
By Darnell Washington, Newsophile Staff Writer
SACRAMENTO, CA -- According to Chip White, a spokesman for the victorious Yes on 8 campaign, the proponents of the measure to restrict marriage in California to one man and one woman are growing increasingly frustrated with the daily demonstrations throughout the state from the losing side.
"We just don't get it," White told the Sacramento Bee on Sunday. "The citizens of California voted twice on this issue. Game over. The majority just doesn't care about your supposed rights, and that's how it works in this country. Move on."
Rick Warren, best-selling author and pastor of the mega-church Saddleback in Orange County, echoed those views and agrees his congregation is equally frustrated. "Why can't the No on 8 folks just sit back and shut up just like women, blacks, Mexicans and Jews did for years before we decided it was time to make them equal?" he said to an applauding audience at his church Sunday morning. "You'll get equality when we say it's time, and not a moment sooner!"
I think this is all that needs to be said to the Supreme Court for them to realize they need to save the citizenry from these hateful bigots who actually believe THEY will decide when we can all have equal rights. I cannot believe these religious zealots and haters actually spew this shit to cheers from their audiences.

I agree with exhack that this is a parody story, kind of in the vein of "The Onion" or Andy Borowitz. I'm not a fan of Rick Warren, but this is not something he would have said. He's way too media savvy for that. Take it from exhack and me, this is pure parody/satire.

Has there ever been any other examples where the public got to vote to take away or restrict rights?
scottinsf
Absolutely. Just one recent example: last week we also saw the right to adopt children or foster children taken away from gay and lesbian parents in Arkansas. Though I don't think it was an actual amendment to their constitution like prop 8 is attempting to be in California.
Millineryman

My comment wasn't clear. I was referring to the overall concept of voting to restrict rights to certain segments of society.
scottinsf
I see what you're asking and I'd have to say no. Not that I can think of.
That's part of what is so outrageous about prop 8. It's an attempt to amend our state constitution, and in fact make our constitution contradictory to itself. That's partly why I'm cautiously optimistic our Supreme Court will strike prop 8 down as invalid.
Millineryman
From what I understand it does contradict your constitution. I hope the Supreme Court strikes it down also. The whole thing just reeks of politics masquerading as religion.

Well, let's see now. I had a perfectly legal and valid marriage. AND NOW I DON'T, thanks to a bunch of perfect strangers who got to check a little box that said, "Let's screw the fagots". Yeah, I guess I see his point. Why should I be angry? Maybe we're being unfair. Maybe he wouldn't mind if I canceled his marriage in the privacy of my voting booth. Sounds like his wife could use the rest.

I encourage that boycotts against Mr. Leatherby's business interests continue. Support the annual gay pride Rainbow Festival is not a free pass to usurp our rights and freedom. His confusion rests on his own hypocritical shoulders. I know of no where in the Bible where God states to deny rights for perceived sins ; religious reasons is hardly an appropriate reason. Don't blame God, blame your draconian Catholic leaders, blame your lack of insight and civil right values. Blame your lack of a spine. The gay community will gladly forego Mr. Leatherby's participation in the Rainbow Festival, which more than likely was a self serving advertisement for your business. Hypocrite, persecutors, self serving, bigots that would take the civil rights of other Americans will be called out regardless of their minimal support for festival events. This isn't pay $200.00 and get a pass. This isn't a game. There will come a time when

Agreed. The guy suddenly has principles to impart on his kids. Down with gay marriage. Rules are rules. Meanwhile he sponsored annual gay events in violation of Catholic rules which forbid participation in or support of anything considered sinful, and he did so for profit. Then he turned around and took that money and handed it to the people who persecute those who supported his business. Maybe the kids could use the lesson on hypocrisy.

The money we spend at these businesses pays the salaries of their bigoted employees, who take that money and use it to scare and otherwise coerce other people to support their bigotry. Boycotts send a message to the top of the pyramid, and it trickles down. (And these people just love them some trickle down, don't they?)

Yes, but also remember that there may also be people working for these companies that contributed to OPPOSE proposition 8. You would need to conduct a statistical analysis of ALL the contributions, focusing on the company affiliations of the donors, in order to come up with anything that would even begin to be fair. Even then, you would have to compare the donations of people in management versus those who are in the lower ranks. One of the things that I have noticed in perusing the lists of donors from various localities with which I am familiar is the preponderance of small donations in opposition to Proposition 8. (The exception being people in the arts who have made very generous contributions against.) A lot of the very large contributions are in support of Proposition 8. For example, in the town that I grew up in, north of Chicago, someone who works for Fenwal Blood Technologies donated $50,000 in support, and someone who works for Baxter Labs, who donated $20,000. But when I went to the zip code of where my daughter lives in New York, there were probably five times as many donations, and, while they were all in opposition, they were all $500 or less.

Your list only goes through the letter "n." Why is that? And, I'm curious, but how are these companies considered "Mormon Church business interests." I'm a real serious boycotter or consumer refusenik, but I need to know on what basis I should be shunning a particular business. My list of reasons for not buying from or not frequenting a particular business concerns their environmental record, their record with regard to women and minorities, their support of the right-wing agenda, etc. I'm more than happy to add connections to discriminating religious organizations to the list, but I really would appreciate some details with regard to the association these companies have with the Mormon Church (or the Catholic Church, for that matter). And where is O-Z?

From the article: "Protesting is a time-honored American tradition," said Ned Dolejsi, executive director of the California Catholic Conference. Catholic leaders were active in the Yes on 8 campaign. "But it's unfortunate when it steps over into religious bigotry or harassment."
Sorry - the attempts of Catholics, Mormons and other Christian groups to limit my human rights because I'm Gay and choose to live my life based on my own religious beliefs is bullshit. Pure, unadulterated bullshit.
Also from the article: "It's disheartening that he is being singled out," said Lisa West, spokeswoman for the church in the Sacramento area. "We had hoped there would be more tolerance for different viewpoints."
After decades of being shit on - fired from jobs, harassed, or even killed - because of sexual orientation, they expect LGBT's to be "tolerant" of being shit on?
From the article: For now, Leatherby said, Proposition 8 should stand. "If they want to win me over," he said, "that's not how to do it."
I don't give a damn about winning you over, Mr. Leatherby. Your beliefs don't matter to me - as long as your beliefs don't dictate my rights and the way I practice _my_ religion.

Mr. Leatherby says "Let's move on. I always told my children that once a rule was made, you have to abide by it. I think it should be the same in this circumstance."
Then why didnt he let the supreme court ruling that allowed gay marriages to stand and abide by it... his justification for supporting Prop 8 isnt very sound reasoning.. is this how he's teaching his children to reason out issues? What most str8 people, who appear to gay friendly, wont say is their biggest fear is that maybe one of their children might grow up to be gay and somehow siring a gay child is a mark of a failure on the parent..( i realize there are some that dont feel that way and would love their child, but they are the minority that voted to let gays marry)...
I had a str8 woman friend who had a 11 year old son at the time.. we were talking about sexuality one day and i said what if her son was gay how would she handle that.. her response was oh, he's not gay, he's all boy... many str8s still believe we have this hidden side and when we are in the privacy of our homes or gay environments, we all become drag queens or wear woman clothes or act like girls..... ive never dressed in drag and have no attraction to men that do... there's still so many misconceptions out there...

This is just a temporary setback and all the working class people who spent obscene amounts of their own money to pass this unconstitutional amendment have just experienced a bit of cosmic justice although they don't know it yet. I'm guessing a guy with ten kids and a ice cream shop doesn't exactly have fort Knox resting in his bank account. I'm also guessing the old "give till it hurts" preacher to congregation screed was at play for a lot of people who participated in this demonstration of ignorance and bigotry. I don't want to wish ill on these poor fools, they're sheep (according to the bible), that's what they are even though they're really nasty and cruel, and probably don't realize it. So I hope this will be a lesson to their subculture, I think in this economic downturn a lot of them will regret throwing away so much money. The only lasting thing they've purchased is incontrovertible proof of their everlasting shame of being an obstruction to human progress. They'll tell their peers about it, no doubt they've already been bragging about how they stopped gay marriage. I say let them boast as loudly as they can because it'll make our laugh, the last laugh, all the more sweet.

That's part of what is so outrageous about prop 8. It's an attempt to amend our state constitution, and in fact make our constitution contradictory to itself. That's partly why I'm cautiously optimistic our Supreme Court will strike prop 8 down as invalid.
There will come a time when

Now if you can show that these companies made CORPORATE donations to Yes on 8, then you're onto something. Just because some douchebags who work at AmEx donated as private persons doesn't mean AmEx is under thrall of teh Holy Underpantsers.
I won't spend one thin dime at a company whose management team is made up of bigots. I'm going to trickle on 'em.
And that's why we're part of the British Empire to this very day!
Oh wait, his bishop didn't like that rule.
Nevermind, children. Some rules are made to be broken.
Bastards all of them.
In my area about ten people gave over $100,000 to prop 8, type in Farmington NM to the database.
Does this include the gay marriage rule in California before Prop 8?
Will he support lawsuits to invalidate existing gay marriages in the state?
I don't know many parents who make household rules to take away their childrens' constitutional rights for no good reason, other than bigotry.
Would Mr. Leatherby adopt a black child and tell him/her that he/she could only ride at the back of the bus? Call the social workers!
Not any more.
Leatherby. Your beliefs don't matter to me - as long as your beliefs don't dictate my rights and the way I practice _my_ religion.
he gave $20,000 to support taking away our rights because of his religious beliefs... and he's confused why GLBTs are pissed at him because he supports the Pride festival??
okay, if his religious beliefs are that STRONG that he gives $20k to the yes on 8 bigots... WHY DO HIS RELIGIOUS BELIEFS NOT GET IN THE WAY WHEN IT COMES TO GAY PRIDE?
$$$??
sure, he'll be your friend when he needs your patronage... then he takes your money and uses it to deprive you of rights you've already been given.
and wonders why we're pissed at him?
again... WTF??!
In that case, I assume that his wife and daughters don't vote.

what do these people think about?
they really must believe the tripe that being gay is just a "lifestyle" and we really won't notice if we're not treated like human beings.

Leatherby Family Creamery in Sacramento - bring 'er down boys!
There's a joke in there someplace.

Leatherby Family Creamery is not a sponsor.
He might have bought a booth to sell ice cream, but that doesn't make him a sponsor.
Surprise surprise -- another Yes on 8 liar.
First class asshole.
Not that I'm the least bit surprised. I'm just glad this kind of hypocrisy can be exposed so easily now.
Ten kids. Seriously. Now what are the chances that at least one of those kids is gay?

fuckers as they deserve whatever they
get 'cuz turnabout is fair play.

Also, Marriott Inc.'s national headquarters is located in Bethesda, MD. Why doesn't someone organize a protest for the DC area. http://www.hoovers.com/marriott/--ID__56078--/f...
You can also email Marriott's executives directly to let them know how you feel.

I'm angry about the passage of Prop 8 and I think emailing these supporters is a good way to let some of that anger out.

Well, then, why in the hell didn't you honor the supreme court decision in your state in the first place and "move on?" You are either incredibly obtuse, a hypocrite or both. "Let's move on." Indeed!
Well, Davey, here's a new rule for you: when you give $20,000 to discriminate against a whole class of your customers, not all of them will be stupid enough to keeping spending money in your business.
How about this one? When you help make the rule that discriminates against a whole class of your customers, they may not want to abide by it, or abide YOU, or abide the continuing profitable existence of your business.
Take your condescending ass to bankruptcy court, MF'er.
That's the idea.
The more I think on this, the more disgusted I am with the leaders who asked justifiably angry people to do nothing to punish those who supported Prop 8. I cannot understand why people who are being discriminated against, should not withhold their business from those who discriminate. And I'm surprised at how smarmy and condescending the discriminators (this clown, the woman who owns the bar/grill in LA, and the Moron and Catholic flacks - the churches are most definitely businesses) can't help from being when they try to defend their actions. They may as well shut up - they're only proving they deserve to be driven out of business.
i think he's about to get a lesson in frustration...
Wait, does this mean I'm going to have to stop watching Project Runway?
Folks can vote as they desire and folks can spend their money as they desire.

This is just like the old bitch at El Cayote, crying and about how the restaurant had always BEEN THERE for the gay community and that they had done so much for the gay community by offering a friendly place to eat. She didn't ONCE mention that every one of the gay people who went there PAID for their food and drinks and that money went into the pockets of her and her family. I'm sick of these people acting like we owe THEM something just because they've given us the privilege of BUYING their products and padding THEIR pockets.
Give me a f'n break already!!!!!
Yeah, and lurking trolls get no credit at all. From your meager and uniform comment history it's pretty clear that's the only reason you're here, and you contribute nothing to the discussion. Go elsewhere.
