Hey BushB...we finally agree on something. How can McCain/Clinton expect to solve the problem by encouraging more usage of Gas? It's really simple: We must either cut down on our usage, or greatly increase the supply.
And, bail outs by the Gvt (us) are just plain dumb. They do nothing to solve the problem.

And this half a million jobs supported millions of other jobs that day by day become ever more tenuous. The bottom is going to fall out before the election, the only question is will there be riots when the Rulers attempt to impose Martial Law. Our country is about to be tested in ways last seen during the Civil War and during the Great Depression. Truly bitter and irreconcilable division and next to no assets to throw at the problem.

Four words: Eisenhower Bullet Train System
Okay, not Eisenhower, but that gives you an idea of the last time we had a great transportation revolution. Think of the construction jobs that can be filled refitting existing rail lines for high-speed routes up and down each coast. Perhaps a solar/magnet-powered line linking the coasts. Then think of the air traffic congestion that could be eased, the overworked controllers, the runway near-misses, easing the burden on outdated bridges... We could kill about five birds with that stone. All it takes is some vision.
Eh, screw it. Let's stick with the oil a while longer. I'm not totally fleeced yet.

What is particularly disheartening is that these aren't jobs that are shipped overseas obviously.

This will continue if Hillary is not the nominee! She is the only one that can beat McCain. The Obama's are too controversial, to inexperienced and to connected to the wrong people to win the general election. We must do what is right for this country. Voters and Superdelegates, get out and vote Hillary. Can we stand on our ego's and take a chance that McCain will win the presidency? That would be so foolish. The way we democrats must unite now is to choose the nominee who will win the general election against McCain. If gas prices are not high enough (by the way, alot of the oil execs are backing Obama), if enough of you have not lost year homes, jobs, security and you want the war in Iraq to continue, then choose Obama. If you want to win the presidency choose Hillary!!!!!!!!!!!

These are no doubt majority union construction jobs we are talking about here?
I would wager that is the case.

But the Fed keeps pumping the money supply and the stock market is up, so everything must be peachy, right?

The ongoing housing bust cannot be hidden with talking point pasties. Republicans can spin their truthless tassels all they want but it just makes them look like big boobs.

My husband works construction, as do his father, brother, and nephews, so I've got a bit of anecdata on this subject.
First of all, the construction jobs lost when the housing boom busted were never union jobs. Housing builders are almost never unionized. They also pay less than big commercial or road construction. Gee, why could that be?
You ask why we didn't hear much about construction going sour. We did, it was just disguised in the anti-immigrant hysteria. That fall my husband's company cut its payroll almost "painlessly" - they purged all the people who couldn't prove immigrantion status off the payroll. 47 people gone from a 138 person project.
I don't recall exactly when the anti-immigrant hysteria peaked, but I strongly suspect that a lot of it was due to laid-off housing construction workers seeking jobs elsewhere, putting pressure on industries that hadn't had the jobs competition before.

And, of course, McHillary's "gas tax holiday" will just make it worse, because highway construction funding will have to be cut.
I hate "Doggie Treat Economics" like McHillary's tax gimmick or Bush's Bullshit Refunds.

You are so right, Jenius. They say that a fully loaded RR car gets 700 MPG on diesel. I'm a capitalist. However, I do believe that the rails and railroad beds should be subsidized just like the highways. The bonds to do such could be gov't insured and wouldn't cost us a thing.

Yeah, we're all fucked. Time to roll up the carpet and close the stage. Meanwhile, smart people who live below their means are buying up America at half price. If you're a victim; it's time to fill out your application for Section 8 housing...

Here's some bad news for you, MF. The housing bust is over. The stock market bubble has bottomed, jobs are increasing. Happy days are here again. Probably a new stock market high before November which means billions, if not trillions for companies to invest in employees and equipment. If the democrats want to win in November (not a bad thing), then it will have to be on a Iraq deployment platform.
And, bail outs by the Gvt (us) are just plain dumb. They do nothing to solve the problem.
