Do they not have condoms in China?
Secondly, good luck feeding all those hungry mouths in the years to come, what with the desertification going on.

Update: 7700 dead just reported in one county alone in the province. Numbers going up by the hour.
And in case anyone missed this:
Tom Allen, Dem running for Senate in Maine, just endorsed Obama.
MSM finally acknowledges Obama ahead in SDs...

Speaking of natural disasters. The situation forty miles from me is devastating for those in PIcher who have held back from having their properties bought out by the federal government. The story of Picher-Cardin superfund site is a case study of Senator Inhofe's inability to ever do the right thing for his constituents. Now comes the tornado. I guess, in a way, the residents who are left will now be forced to move, and that's a good thing considering how dangerous it is to drink their "lead based water" or even breath their air around there. Inhofe has continuously spoken out of both sides of his mouth regarding the superfund site. We have a chance to elect a John Kennedy'esque candidate here to replace the evil national embarassment, Jim Inhofe. Please help:
I believe if you give to Andrew Rice, you are actually giving to those people who have suffered the results of the superfund site and now this horrible tornado. Rice will ensure Oklahomans, like them, are treated fairly and NOT FORGOTTEN!

The final death toll will be HUGE. I seriously doubt many buildings in China are built to earthquake code.

I seriously doubt anything in China is held to any kind of code.

32,000 dead in Burma so far, with over 30,000 missing, no number on homeless and starving.
And already 8500 dead in China...

Nigel, even worse, the Three Gorges dam is built in the vicinity of 3 faults, and only to a 7.0 earthquake rating.
If this dam ever gives (and it already has cracked from other earthquakes), can you imagine the horror?

Did you really give "5000 may be dead" a "wow" and then immediately segue into an aside about some population-size anecdote?
Unintentional, I'm sure, but that seems a little callous. Having a gazillion citizens in China doesn't make 5000 dead (or 7000, or more) as trivial as your presentation makes it seem. It's a hell of a lot of people dead, wounded, and/or trapped in rubble, and it's horrible.

I imagine there aren't many structures built to earthquake code in the areas that would be affected by the New Madrid fault in the middle of the US, either.
And it's due for a huge one, not just the tremors that happened week before last, was it?
Fact is, we need to start taking care of Mother Earth and stop thinking "the bigger the better" if we want our descendants to inherit it and that includes population. We haven't taken the best care of her, any of us, worldwide.
