Obama draws record crowds while McCain draws pictures of the dinosaurs he saw as a boy
  • trumandem · 1 year ago
I was watching CNN's coverage this evening and they reported 50,000 was in attendence. That's 50,000. Now I see it was really 75,000! Only until this moment do I realize something is happening the press and lastest polling is catching. Earlier I saw a post on DKos discussing whether or not he could take Mississippi. If on election night one looks up and sees Obama taking Mississippi, you are looking at 450+ EV's.

    trumandem,

Yup, something is happening and I honestly don't think that the repubs can stop it, now matter what happens between now and election day. The country is tired and people feel worn-out from the past eight years......this is the awakening of the realization that we are in very serious trouble as a nation if we don't change. My gut instinct tells me that we have not seen an election cycle like this in my lifetime. The last one like this was probably 1932. That cycle brought us 50 years of democratic prosperity.

I think Democrats need to hook up with plenty of veterans and express their outrage over Bu$h and Republicans continuously trying to find ways to cut back on our veterans. This is a fairly old article, but Democrats need to be rebranded as the party who looks after veterans. Republicans need to wear the mantle they deserve which is GET TROOPS INJURED and then DON'T PAY FOR THEM when they return home, or also their penchant for trying to find ways to exclude veterans from their rightly earned benefits.

What other American politician could draw such a crowd? Surely not John McCain!

  • doug · 1 year ago
Obama is popular in Oregon. No?
  • trumandem · 1 year ago
Dougsmiley, its one thing to be popular. Its another to draw freakin' 75,000 people. Whoever the advance person was for Obama's campaign they must have been floored when this many people showed up. And on top of that, the largest crowd to date before this was Philadelphia, 35,000. This crowd does better than double that.

I don't think Huckabee adequately explained his "joke" about someone attempting to assinate Obama during Huckabee's speech in front of the NRA.... why hasn't the Corporate Propaganda Media asked Huckabee to explain his comments more thoroughly?

Here is his attempt at an explanation:

""It was a dumb, off-the-cuff remark," he told "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert, adding: "And, you know, it wasn't the first dumb thing I've ever said and -- let me go ahead and announce on this program -- it won't be the last dumb thing I've ever said. ... This wasn't funny, I'll be the first to tell you that. Shouldn't have said it. I apologize. I don't know what else I can do."

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008...

I guess I'm wondering how Huckabee will be rewarded for his stupidity? I mean MSNBC has been using him as a paid analyst, and he is still in the running for the Republican VEEP? Its seems to me like stupidity of that sort should be worthy of a congressional medal of honor or something?

Woo Hoo!! My ballot is in, and I can't wait to help deliver Oregon to Obama!!

This goes way beyond my initial excitement at the fact we'd actually count this time around BTW - This is huge, and I'm thinkin' Oregon's gonna be *really* good to Obama. Now I just need to remember some extra champagne in case we help him seal the deal Tuesday night... 8)
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Funny how all the supporters in the photos appear to be white...if I'm any judge of light to mid tone.
  • gabrielk · 1 year ago
Did anyone read any of the comments on the WaPo article? Truly makes me frightened for my country that such hateful ignorance and racism exists to such an extent.
  • lovepeaceandallthat · 1 year ago
Yes, I did read some of those comments!! They were awful, and we have all read a lot of awful comments! I hope it was just a couple of folks, I didn't check. Some of us should go over to those comments and clean them up with a dose of truth
  • Crazy4Obama · 1 year ago
Not just wow. But wow, wow, wow.
  • c1 · 1 year ago
Oregon's got a lot of whites, but they're educated and very progressive...The ones that vote Democratic anyway.

I live in a very red county, and know many Republicans who cannot vote for Obama yet, but will most likely cross over for him in the Fall.

(Yes, I'm already working on them... lol)

Yikes! 75,000, is that some kind of record for a political event like this? I'm waiting to see him start hitting six figures. He just might be able to do it in a California or something come generals time.
  • lovepeaceandallthat · 1 year ago
He could hit six figures in Portland, easy. Just give us enough space to fill and we will fill it.
  • FightBack · 1 year ago
    gabrielk,

We have been witness to this ignorance for the past eight years. Yeah, they've been in power. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for their crazy, mad power hungry ways. BTW, some even relate that kind of thinking to someone having psychotic tendencies.

We crazy-ass white Oregonians are going to put Obama over the top!

OVERWHELMING - Portland Obama Rally SlideShow

  • mirth · 1 year ago
    You da GetMan. :)

The pics are so thrilling...and, I believe, much more telling of this country than those who still hang onto prejudices and/or are too stupid to act in their own best interests. There is a bunch more of us than there is of them, no matter how loud they are.

    Change is a'comin'
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
Is " stupid " really an explanation for racist beliefs? Racism is ingrained over many years of environmental experience. Most people ought to be able able to force themselves to look in the mirrors of racism vs their own interests. Ron, NY
  • lovepeaceandallthat · 1 year ago
When I saw the headline at Huffpost a few hours ago I whooped and hollered!! I live in Salem, OR (hour S. of Portland). I am so thrilled.

I couldn't make it to the rally because of health problems, but I am from Portland and have been to many, many political rallies there. I knew it was going to be big, so I was hoping for REALLY big so the news couldn't totally ignore it. I got my wish!! I am soooooooo proud of being from Portland! I was bummed I couldn't go, but now I am so happy about the turnout that my bummedness has been washed away.

Listen, if it is a sunny weekend day in Portland and people hear the word "rally", you are going to get a lot of people. Obama?? In May? FINALLY??!! Watch out. People in Portland (and Oregon in general) are smart. Simple as that.

Hillary was here in Salem a couple of days ago, a few blocks from my house actually. She showed up at the campaign headquarters here to help with phone banking. It was a "surprise" visit. Hmmm. I have to wonder if she surprised everyone so as to not attract protesters. I could be wrong, but I have always thought that if Hillary stayed in the race all the way into May that she would face large protests here in Oregon.

Because when we hear the word "protest" on a sunny weekend day..... watch out!

Seriously, Hillary isn't even trying to draw crowds here. It is hilarious actually, because the local paper here was presenting her strategy here in Oregon as being "small forums" where she will talk intimately with undecided voters about "real issues". She was in some small town talking with 100 undecideds today, I think. Those folks must have been invited.... Obama, on the other hand, gives like two days notice and 75,000 people show up.

WHY THE HELL IS SHE STILL IN THE RACE!!!!!!! I hope Oregon puts him over the top. But we only have 52 (I think) delegates. We'll see what happens on Tuesday!
  • ObamaNOW · 1 year ago
AMAZING! It just reinforces the absence of any values in the Hillary camp. Hillary and Bill Clinton are now despised in the Democratic Party because of their racist attacks on Obama and their attempt to steal the nomination away from him. Those who supported Hillary only revealed their corrupt nature and have no business in the Democratic Party. Can any of us honestly say we would welcome one of these bigoted slime who supported such a witch? What would we have in common with scum like that?

This makes Popemania look weak. By the way, where does one goes to hold a rally for 75,000 people? Football stadium?
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
Given the two presidential candidates, it would be most instructive for a polling organization to include the WHY? question for each polling response. This, more than any other data, would explain the thinking of voters in the upcoming presidential election. Ron, NY

Oregon is my favorite state, Portland my favorite city.

I'm not surprised to see the enormous crowd gathered to tell Barack and Michelle: "We've waited so long for you. We're thankful for you. We're with you. We'll help you."

    Awesome, Oregon.
    Awesome Oregon.

Portland is an awesome city. San Francisco, CA to Vancouver, BC is one of the coolest regions in the world. ;-)

  • lovepeaceandallthat · 1 year ago
Why thank you! I was born and raised in Portland. If I had been raised elsewhere, my political leanings sure wouldbe different. Of course, Portland has changed so much during my life. I am 42 -- so many more rich folk now! Since I am not a rich folk, I live in Salem. :-)
