AMERICAblog: A deal has been reached in the New York State Senate

This New Yorker finds the New York State Senate to be an utter embarrassment.

The fact that Espada worked out a deal to be Majority leader means that the Democrats have sold their soul. How disgusting. Espada may be as loathsome a Democrat as we have had in office in quite some time.

How bad is it? Let's put it this way...it would be like keeping Lieberman in the fold by offering him a leadership post. Only it is a thousand times worse.

As for the same-sex marriage Bill, Diaz had been threatening to jump ship over this. Good riddance to him. I will be very surprised if that legislation gets passed. this time around,

One thing is for certain, every single one of those State Senators, from both parties, should be drummed out of office for dereliction of duty. Check out any major New York paper (the Daily News has had expecially strong coverage on it) and you will see what a mess of clowns they have become.

Anybody who would re-elect any one of them has rocks in their head. They all need primary challenges.

Nice deal Espada worked for himself: he's a turncoat who gets the job of Majority Leader, for doing a double-double cross.

In addition to creating chaos for weeks on end in New York government, I've read elsewhere he's also despicable on many other counts, so don't count on anything progressive from this asshole.

Oops shoulda read those pieces first, Espada may well push same sex marriage, if only to wield his power:

"His secretary bursts in and hands Espada an advance copy of a proclamation Paterson will soon issue; it calls the Senate back into special session tomorrow and lists the bills the governor wants considered.

This is when Espada exults, raising his white-on-white French cuffs with the blue pe monogram toward the ceiling. “Look at this!” he shouts, reading the document. “Same-sex marriage—as suggested by Espada! No vacancy decontrol! All Pedro!”

“Get Díaz on the phone,” Schlein murmurs. “Send him the proclamation, and send him his statement from yesterday, that’s he ready to bolt if Paterson puts same-sex marriage on the list, and circle it!”

“Write him a note that says, ‘Call Pedro!’ ” Espada says.

Espada has claimed to be in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage—but that’s not why he nudged Paterson to include it on tomorrow’s agenda or why he’s happy now. A vote on the controversial bill could easily catapult the Reverend Rubén Díaz Sr., a Democratic senator and a virulent opponent of same-sex marriage, into an alliance with the Republicans, breaking the stalemate and putting Espada definitively in charge."

It also helped that they missed a paycheck.

It's nice to know your interest in NY begins and ends with one issue. How can anyone look at the events of the last month and think "Now's the time to strike"? The Rs would be back n power before weekend.

Hello guest (would that be Christopher Guest? I love your movies).

Rather presumptuous of you to assume that this blog ONLY cares about that one issue.

As it happens, the same-sex marriage bill is part of the story here, as judybrowni pointed out below.

As for the R's being in power...the fact that Espada was able to work out a leadership deal with Democrats should make everybody want to take a shower. Both parties have been rendered impotent because of the events of the last month and ALL New Yorkers suffer.

I, for one, am not jumping for joy over this.
