Of course it's France. : ) Much good luck to to M. Delanoe!

You should watch this clip (I couldn't get it to come up right) where Jesse Ventura makes a decent argument about separation of church and state and church involvement in secular arguments, such as gay marriage, political endorsements, etc. Made me gain new respect for the guy.

USA has had 43 presidents. Chances are big that at least two of those have been gay. It's just that they kept quiet about it.

I think a President would be wonderful. We should be fighting to have at least 10% of our elected Senators, Represntatives and Governors as openly Gay Men and Women. (Instead of just the wonderful Barney Frank.) But it is hard for Gays to be considered an important minority group by many people. I worked hard during Tom Duane's fight to have a Gay person represent Manhattan's West Side after Tedd Weiss died in '92. Even Ted Weiss's widow, Sonya Hoover, sent out a letter supporting Tom over Nadler as a Human Rights issue. Even on the streets of Chelsea, not everyone felt it was important to have Gay Representation in Congress. Compare that to African American's, who are an equal percentage of the population to homosexuals, who feel it is very important to have African-American representation. WE have a lot to work on to develop our own political powers.

Germany is also likely to have a gay president within a few years. The popular mayor of Berlin, Wowereit, is gay and I think he is one of the most well-liked politicians in Germany today.

There is a book that came out in the 70's called "Gay Roots" that proposed that George Washington was gay also. Their reasons for suspicion are the fact that he was 27 (I think) when he married; he had to be forced into a marriage with an older woman and he'd never shown much interest in women. He & Martha never had any children of their own. He designed his own clothes AND he adored musical theatre. In other words, he fit a whole lot of the current stereotypes for gay men, which were just as valid in his day. It is strongly believed that MANY of the men who were closest to Washington were gay also. Coincidence? Pres. Buchanan was definitely gay, and after reading C.A. Tripp's "The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln" I do believe he was gay as well. And Eleanor Roosevelt was one certain lesbian first lady.
