AMERICAblog: A speech delivered forty years ago tonight in Memphis

OT:
April 3 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama has pulled even with Hillary Clinton in endorsements from top elected officials, with a surge in support from congressional freshmen and governors from Republican-dominated states.
Obama yesterday won the backing of Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal, who became the sixth head of a Republican-leaning state to come out for him in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. In the past week, Obama picked up support from first-term Senators Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania. Clinton, backed by two governors from Republican states, gained no superdelegates in that time.
Obama, 46, is endorsed by 16 U.S. House freshmen to Clinton's 6, and 40 percent of his congressional allies are from ``red states,'' or those that voted for President George W. Bush in 2004, compared with one-quarter for Clinton. That bolsters the Obama campaign's argument that he would have broader backing in the general election.
If he were still alive, the 79 year-old MLK's speeches and sermons would be edited to show how much he hated America and Whitey and endlessly repeated for Wolf Blitzer, Chris Matthews, and Candy Crowley to tut-tut over.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was hounded mercilessly by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. In 1965, they actually tried to get King to commit suicide.
Hoover was a real Repuke. A cross-dressing fascist who had no regard for the rule of law. Busboy would love him. All night long.

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama raked in $40 million in March, leaving Hillary Rodham Clinton and her $20 million in the fundraising dust and stuffing his campaign treasury so he can outspend her in the crucial Pennsylvania primary.
His haul in new donations also buttressed his argument to Democratic superdelegates that he has built a vast network of donors and volunteers that they wouldn't want to lose by denying him the nomination.
Obama has attracted nearly 1.3 million donors, largely through the Internet.
Obama has attracted nearly 1.3 million donors, largely through the Internet.
I think it is far more significant that this also means that Obama is not beholden to the fat cats, corporations and power brokers for the money. I think he started out initially well funded by the crooked power brokers, but most of his money is from small donors through the internet. We may well achieve cleaner campaign financing despite the efforts of the current politicians to obstruct changing how campaigns are financed. Once a good number of honest or more honest politicians are financed by small donations through the internet, they can pass the laws that will ban the contributions and control by the crooked fat cats. I hope! I hope!

Not only MLK, but both Kennedy brothers. Saddest of all is that the song, "Abraham, Martin and John" will soon add a fourth name, Barack. There is no way it can be avoided given how deeply entrenched the right wing is in our government agencies responsible for the president's security. The FBI, CIA, NSA and other organizations are deeply entrenched by the right wing. Of course, as noted above, Robert Kennedy should also be added to that song. Barack will be particularly targeted because, as I noted in another post in this thread, his campaign financing will be mostly from the little people through the internet rather than being beholden to the crooked fat cats, power brokers and evil corporations. If he survives, he will be such a massive threat to the current corrupt system, that they must try to assassinate him. Obama probably considers himself part of the current political structure, but the fact that his campaign financing was independent of the corruption will obligate them to assassinate him as he is just too much of a threat to them.

The republicans who murdered MLK are the same kind of republicans of today. This is why Barack Obama said the other night that he prays for his family's safety when he is on the road and they're at home.

You got that right. Obama needs Secret Service protection because he gets death threats. McCain still doesn't have Secret Service and I bet he isn't getting death threats, either.
This country is full of violent, bigoted rednecks who want to kill blacks.

This speech has always disturbed me. He seems to know his fate. But, like any great leader, he's more concerned about his followers than himself. Knowing what would happen the next day, it's difficult to watch. But we should all be proud that such a person once walked among us.

It is uncanny how he saw his own death coming. Abraham Lincoln did that too. It is probably a sign of greatness as King was attuned to a higher plane.

Tom3,
I'm listening to Mike Malloy right now. He was with AA from the beginning and also was fired by them. AA is finished once Rachel Maddow gets her MSNBC show.

It is so sad and pathetic when a thread honoring the great MLK is used by some as just anather excuse to bash Hillary Clinton. This has driven many away from Obama and will cost him in the general. He talks unity, while people here shove in the knife. Why this desperation?

I often forget how young Martin Luther King Jr was when he died. How amazing he managed to accomplish so MUCH in just 39 years. Astonishing. And his wisdom was so far beyond that of a 30 year old man that it is almost impossible to think of him as a man in his 30's. I pray that MLK is smiling down from above as he watches America elect its first black president this year.

busboy, you keep right on defending rush and hannity. they've done tremendous damage to this country by passing off their bullshit patriotism and insidious hatred as acceptable GOP values and then crying about being censored or PC'd when anyone calls them on their crap.
they've operated for the last seven years as a not-so-stealth mouthpiece for the bush white house and that's the sickest part of all.

I just finished watching McCain Speak on Martin Luther King Day, 2008. (The spin progresses as we speak, so let me put my take down now.)
It was hard to miss the irony of McCain speaking on this day, in Memphis, at the very site of King's murder. And seeing him on that balcony felt just plain WRONG! ...and while he said all the right things about Martin Luther, he also comes out of the America that killed King, figuratively speaking. Now he would NON-figuratively send more men to be killed in the Middle East quagmire if elected. King was, above all, a man of Peace, and he would not have liked seeing a warmonger like McCain making political hay out of his day. Oh yes, He admitted he was wrong and apologized about being against the MLK National Holiday, but he says he came to realize too LATE... Are we to wait as long for him to realize he's also wrong about this war?

MSNBC (top right) has a nice collection of MLK pics (#4 being especially endearing):
and Coulter/Limbaugh/Hannity/Beck/O'Reilly have all said worse on the public airwaives yet the GOP and it's corporate media outlets still embrace them all.

tls, I don't recall Rush or Hannity ever calling anyone a whore on the air. And, you are wrong on so many counts. Limbaugh was fired from Monday Night Football because he said that T Owens was getting preferential treatment from the press because he is black. You saw what "nappy headed Ho's" got for Imus. I think Randi is a gifted personality and she'll probably come off her "indefinite" suspension. When you are an "infotainer" or journalist you've got to watch your mouth because the PC police are everywhere. And, BTW, I thought that Imus was 'way over the line'.
