Maybe McCain saw Jim Kramer and thinks he is the one who had the tirade and knew this was coming. I've learned that people with dementia sometimes watch TV and think that they are actually part of what is happening on the screen. If that is then true, he thinks he is giving speeches to larges groups of people, he thinks he is a reformer, and he thinks Sindy is sober.

Read the comments to the linked article on the ABC blog. Apparently McSame of Dec. 2007 did not understand that McCain of 2005 DID warn about a financial crisis developing, specifically involving Freddie Mac/Fannie May: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/record.xpd?id=1...

Be ready to answer this comeback from the Repubs. Note that this wasn't a general warning that included private companies but only government-sponsored entities (GSEs) like Freddie and Fannie.

the funny thing is... mcsame and gramm were all for deregulation of the banking/credit/loan industries.

what he's complaining about in his reform bill is the corruption at the top of the ladder... and that it needed to be fixed.

no views on any other part of the industry other than GSE's... it didn't occur to him that if this was happening at Fanny Mae, it was probably happening elsewhere in the industry? c'mon.

deregulation AIDED this corruption... why would it only happen at Fanny Mae?

if anything, what would've scared the shit out of me is that they CAUGHT Fanny Mae corruption... and the 1000's of unregulated banks/brokers in the industry were doing THE EXACT THING.

he was freaked about GSE's... they make up what, 10% of the industry?

another reason not to vote for this man... hindsight may be 20/20, but a leader should at least have some foresight.

That's a really good point. McCain was supposedly complaining about GSEs in 2005 without thinking it through and understanding that it should well be applied to this whole financial sector. By the way, every article I've read about this mess says Freddie/Fannie account for not 10% but about 50% of the entire mortgage market.

Looks like something similar to this bill was proposed in the Senate in 2003 without passing, once by a Republican (S. 1508 [108th]: Federal Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2003) and once by a Democrat (S. 1656 [108th]: Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight Modernization Act of 2003). Also something was proposed in the House of Reps without passing (H.R. 2803 [108th]: Housing Finance Regulatory Restructuring Act of 2003).

yeah, but he is only reitnerating what was stated in the already introduced bill in the previous REPUBLICAN Congress and never acted on in that session. To me, he is saying, "Hey, we never acted on this bill and I think we need to do something, but it was in a previous session". Don't you have to introduce a new bill in a new session of Congress? I thought so.

One thing I heard is that many companies are INCORRECTLY classiifed and whatever loose regs there are a inappropriately applied. For example, GE is reg'd as an industrial entity, that is incorrect because 51% of its assets come from financial income (e.g. Long Term Insurance, Credit, etc.). So, it should be reg'd as a financial entity. There a plenty of examples like this making many companies subject to totally incorrect regulations and getting away with murder.
