AMERICAblog: ABC's Cokie Roberts: Hawaii is "some sort of foreign exotic place"

  • jr · 1 year ago
"Obama isn't as American as Panamanian born McCain"-Cokie
  • PeteWa · 1 year ago
Cokehead Roberts doesn't know that Hawaii is a part of the United STATES of America...
    Why am I not surprised?
  • bumpkis · 1 year ago
Tahiti, Seychelles...exotic, and foreign. Hawaii, nice, but not exotic.
  • phillybits · 1 year ago
Aside from Cokie's stupid comment, the other guy made a comment that interested me about the tire gauge and whether or not it's made in America.

How could we find that out? Say we find out it's made in China - could we attack John McCain for not even using American products to attack Obama with? That'd sure be one way to provide even a trivial bump to someone here in need of a job - use American made tire gauges.

    I know it's small but...
  • thereason · 1 year ago
dude..i know! they SAID it was made in America, but what the hell? the chances of that are next to zero...they probably changed the labels..hearkening back to their shoplifting days of yore.....this sounds like a job for <insert super blogger name here>

But I'm sorta exotic looking as well, living in the exotic local in Louisiana. I like SPAM and have several cases in storage. One I the way I like to prepare it is to slice it kinda thin, cornmeal it and fry. Great in a bisquit.

Is a pole-dancer in Bangkok an exrotic dancer? I always get those two words confused....
  • Hangtown Danile · 1 year ago
There are no "poles" in Bangkok to as I understand it; the poles are in Las Vagas to keep the woman form being pulled off the stage. In Bangkok all you have to do is pay a very small fee to get a dancer off the stage. But you had better were a rubber,or be ready for a very unhappy conversations with your girlfriend and/or wife when she gets back form her Gynocologagist.

    Cokie Roberts is a MORON.

Is everyone at that joke of a network on the GOP payroll? I'm beginning to think that is the case. I lost respect for George Stephanopoulos and Charles Gibson months ago.

    Damn fools!

If Cokie has a sister, "Smackie",
    I wouldn't trust her either.

Cokie just loves the Panamanian Gigolo.

"He's a real American," she says.
  • jiminportlandoregon · 1 year ago
"He should be in Myrtle Beach if he wants to take a vacation." Oh really? Who the f**k is she - his mother? She should take a vacation to Mars with the rest of her right wing sidekicks at ABC - starting with asshole Charlie Gibson and that arrogant little punk Stefanopolous. When they get all settled in we will send the douche bags from Fox - O'Dildo, Sean Vanity, Brit S. Hume (S is for scumbag) and let's not forget Roger Aileshole.
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
naschkatzehusseininbendoregon reporting that here I have only seen one small brown bumper sticker for McCain and Obama bumperstickers and signs all over the place. Same thing in Medford where my daughter lives. Traditionally Republican Deschutes and Jackson Counties going Democrat this time around.
  • jiminportlandoregon · 1 year ago
Of course, in Uber liberal Portland, we don't see very many McCain signs. I saw one the other day in a part of the city known as "Irvington", which is as blue as you can get and just figured they were either visiting or they were lost. LOL.
However, reading your comment makes me even more suspicious about why the polls are still so close. I really think something is brewing and I think it's ugly. Hope I'm wrong.
  • bluestockton · 1 year ago
I'm in a purple state and still see lots of W decals and Bush-Cheney stickers. Talk about true believers.

In a Time mag report it was stated that, "Obama returned to his native land...." WTF is that supposed to mean?

True story, a few years ago I was about to pay a bill and decided to toy with the clerk while doing it. I said, "Oh, I'm out of one's. If you don't mind I'll have to pay you in Hawaiian money." The clerk freaked out and almost yelled, "Hawaiian money? No you can't. I don't even know what they use for money in Hawaii."
I said, "You realize that Hawaii is our 50th state and is part of the US?" She said, "I don't care, you have to use American money because we don't accept foreign currency."

Amazing. Absolutely amazing how they do bask in their collective ignorance.

On the subject of Sunday Talking Heads, can anyone explain why CBS would give a forum to known liar/criminal/warmonger Karl Rove?

How discredited to you have to be before they won't give you airtime?

I find this extra galling that this happens in the same week that the media is lining up to spit on John Edwards because of his personal life. Edwards might be morally flawed, but his politcal stances are good. Rove, on the other hand, is known as someone with a history of creating whisper campaigns, push-polling, and other shady dealings. Yet, somehow the media have no qualms about booking him on their shows for some "expert commentary".

    Sheesh.

  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
You know, Cokie's comment borders on the racist.

Especially when she says he should go to Myrtle Beach instead.

What? It's more American to play golf and wear a white belt and shoes in South Carolina than bodysurf in Hawaii?

    Or is it more white?
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
OMG! He eats arugula instead of iceberg lettuce! He drinks orange juice, not coffee! He's too thin, when he should have some meat on his bones! He vacations in Hawaii, not South Carolina! How can he seal the deal with the normal, real American people, when he is so elitist! (Cokie stupidly persists in the fiction that the polls bear some relation to the actual outcome, when Gallup itself, based on the electoral college map, currently gives him a 60%+ chance of victory.
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
Her poll comment is either ignorance or a deliberate lie. But that Obama! He'd better stop smiling so much because all the Republican troglodytes are not going to vote for some elitist who can afford all that good expensive dental care. Cokie is way out of line.

I live in Hawaii and was at Obama's rally in Honolulu, and he looked so radiant, relaxed and happy to be back among friends and family. THIS IS HIS HOMETOWN! His elderly grandma who can't travel is here, and she was the first person he went to visit. He hasn't seen her since 2006! Is he not supposed to see her?! His sister, brother-in-law, and niece are here. His school friends are here. His grandfather's grave at Punchbowl is here. He spent MOST of his childhood years here - not in Indonesia, as the right wing would have you believe.

To say he's shouldn't come here because it "looks bad" and is not politically smart is heartless, cynical and utterly ridiculous.
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
Maybe you Hawaiians should protest ABC.
  • HIreader · 1 year ago
I was there too. To understand Obama, one needs to understand Hawai`i. Perhaps Cokie should come here on business and learn a thing or two!

  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Quick google search: in 2006, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that more than 5 million US mainland visitors went to Hawaii in 05. How could there be that many latte-sipping elitists who HATE Myrtle Beach and real, normal America? Who knew?!

My cousin grew up in Missouri, moved to Hawaii in her 20's. She is now in her 50's and still lives there. She loved the climate and as a nurse she had alot of job opportunities there. My mother and her mother ( sisters) grew up in Illinois. Cokie Roberts makes me sick. Hawaiins are AMERICAMS!
  • martha · 1 year ago
I forgot to tell you my cousin's father fought in WW11 and Korea, and Vietmam - my cousin grew up as a military kid. BUT she is not stupid. She is voting for Obama.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
She is emblematic of the Inside-the-Beltway Chattering Class's naked contempt for Americans: they attribute to ALL Americans a stupidity which people like Roberts herself wants to see in the proles who aren't privileged to be members of her world. It's the worst kind of elitism.
  • catty · 1 year ago
First the quickest way to peeve any person of color is to call them exotic,a bengal tiger, a peacock's plumage,a giselle, and all rare animals are exotic .When you call any person of color exotic,I'm told they think you are likening them an animal.

As ghostly white as Cokie is,she probably thinks their exotic, from a purely ignorant point of view? Beauty isn't limited to a particular ,Cokie!~
  • ClintonHater · 1 year ago
How much to do you want to make a bet she is a Hillary supporter?
  • lschupp · 1 year ago
Actually, she and Sally Quinn, Washington Post reporter and wife of Ben Bradley, have disliked the Clinton's from the start because they wouldn't play the Washington game. They invited Hillary to one of their little get-to-gethers and she declined. Sally played Monica Lewinsky to Ben's Bill (and then trashed Bill for ruining their wonderful little town) and Cokie is the daughter of a La. congressman who died in a plane crash in Alaska. Her brother is a big time lobbyist. Her dad and mother were democrats, but Southern ones. You know, the kind who became Republicans. Both dislike the Clinton's because they considered Bill trailer trash despite his smarts and education and thought Hillary should have divorced him despite Cokie being Catholic--and besides he raised their taxes to keep ours low and balance the GOP budget deficit. They are what is worst about D.C. She and Sally are insular, smug, self-satisfied, judgmental, and generally disgustingly cliched in their thinking.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
They're the Washington Establishment, also exemplified by David Broder and the WaPo editorial board.

Really, they have to go, or we should move the Nation's capital to the Midwest somewhere.

Maybe someone should explain to her that the USS Arizona Memorial, maintained the UNITED STATES Park Service, is located in Hawaii. 1,177 sailors lost their lives there when Hawaii wasn't a state, but it is now.

Maybe we could have an official "Wing Nut Atlas" so we'll know what is and what is not in America. I'm in California, so if they want to let us opt out, we would certainly consider it. Can we take Oregon and Washington and Hawaii with us?
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
We need to finally begin the process of breaking away from the former republic of America.
  • Hangtown Danile · 1 year ago
When I was there 20 years ago with the UNITED STATES navy we passed in salute the USS Arizona. A sad thing that so many sailors had to die so we could have a reason to get into a war to save us from the Grate Depression. Sneak Attack my skinny bikers ass. We left the door wide open. The damage could have been far worse had the CV's been in port. But they were underway...
  • judybrowni · 1 year ago
Yeah, Hawaii, how elitist: $399 for 4 nights in Honolulu (including airfare!)
    http://vacations.travelzoo.com/hawaii-vacations...

An even better bargain: elitist Maui for $501, including airfare, & groceries thrown in for free (no kidding!)
    http://pts.get2hawaii.com/ots/Index.do?promotio...

Actually, in L.A. I've never bothered to go to Hawaii, not exotic enough for me (I'm already in a semi-tropical place, not enough culture shock), for vacation prefer the elitist Old Europe. Even my brother in Miami, can't be bothered with Hawaii -- for him the Far East is the preferred exotic vacation.

Hawaii exotic and foreign? Pffft, and we're not even elitist and big money TV talking heads.
  • Hangtown Danile · 1 year ago
For some real old Europe try Finland. Wonderful place in the summer...
I would not want to be there in the winter however. It makes the worst winters in New England look like So Cal in August. Now that is what I call exotic and foreign. Very cool even in the summer, and air so clear it was hard for this city boy to breath for very long my lungs started hurting.

  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
My guess is that many, many Americans wonder about Cokie's remark and think they remember that Hawaii is one of the 50 states. But to be sure, they have to look it up. Then again, most of them think California is exotic and foreign and that New Mexico is part of Mexico.

Wasn't there some idiot in Congress who made a remark about New Mexico being part of Mexico and foreign soil?

You know, the one who said she was going to win...that one.
  • JoyceH · 1 year ago
Personally, I think the Hawaii trip is going to be a huge benefit to Obama in the long run. Think about it. The media, and especially the Washington press corps, will watch the coverage coming back from their colleagues who've followed the Obamas on vacation, and something will start to dawn on them.

"Waaaaait a minute. We've been trailing Bush down to boring, dreary, dusty, hot, dry Crawford for eight years now. For the next four to eight years, we'll be following Air Force One either to Arizona - or to HAWAII!"

And they'll adjust their coverage accordingly. Count on it.

It is obvious there is no test to determine IQ before hiring these talking heads. Don't forget Bill Moyers was booted off PBS in 2005 so the Bush fundies could make it more right wing.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A...

Late last week, CPB's board declined to renew the contract of its chief executive, Kathleen Cox, a veteran administrator at the agency. She was replaced by Ken Ferree, a Republican who had been a top adviser to Michael Powell, the former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. The Ferree appointment followed the dismissals or departures in recent months of at least three other senior CPB officials, all of whom had Democratic affiliations.

we also forget that Colon Powell's son got a sweat heart job as head of the FCC. Colon of course has no idea why his nit wit of a son got the job. Maybe it was quid pro quo. You talk up WMD and we give your shit head son a nice job.

A would-be star in the Army until serious injuries from an end-over-end jeep accident on a German autobahn cut his military career short, in just a few short years Powell has hopped from a coveted court clerkship to a prestigious law firm to a chief of staff at the Department of Justice, all with the aid of A-list Beltway mentors from both major parties

    http://archive.salon.com/tech/feature/2001/08/0...

My youngest sister was close friends with Rebecca Roberts in high school. I remember driving them to swim lessons, listening to the girls debate how much they could slack off in senior year and still get into the schools they wanted. Rebecca sneered, "I could be in a coma for most of the year and still get into Tulane." Back then she didn't hold much respect for New Orleans, which at the time was my dream destination. To her, it was associated with distant relatives who all wanted to tell her about her grandparents. And they went to NOLA most summers, while us plebians had to be contented with Rehobeth and Ocean City.

    So, yeah, Cokie, pot, kettle.
  • LanceThruster · 1 year ago
Cokie most likely thinks that Hawaiian women still run around bare-breasted in grass skirts (the missionaries "fixed" that, by Gawd). I guess that "brown people" are pretty "exotic" to her.

Maybe she would have been placated had Sen. Obama's family opted to vacation in West Virginia or Kentucky.
  • Happy_Housewife · 1 year ago
Yeah, Hawaii is about as exotic as Vegas. The place is one big Sheraton. And Hawaii is definitely more significant , from a national defense and history standpoint., than Vegas. Has Cokie forgotten the scores of dead sailors who met their final resting place in Pearl Harbor?

What a silly twit. Or something like that. I always get confused by vowels ;-)

  • jimnotjimmy · 1 year ago
It is apparent that Cokie "I support some but by no means all of the troops" Roberts does not realize that the casualty rate for troops from Hawaii is 33% higher, on a per capita basis, than for troops from her beloved South Carolina. As of May, 2008:
    South Carolina
    Casualties: 50
    Population: 4,407,709
    Casualties per capita: 1/88,154

    Hawaii
    Casualties: 20
    Population: 1,283,388
    Casualties per capita: 1/64,169

Anyhow, Obama wanted to vacation in Kansas, but it was booked.

Cokie Roberts is a coconut head. A Cokienut.

Jules: Good. Looks like me an Vincent caught you boys at breakfast. Sorry about that. Whatcha havin'?
    Brett: Hamburgers.
Jules: Hamburgers! The cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast. What kind of hamburgers?
    Brett: Ch-cheeseburgers.
Jules: No, no no, where'd you get 'em? McDonalds? Wendy's? Jack in the Box? Where?
    Brett: Big Kahuna Burger.
Jules: Big Kahuna Burger. That's that Hawaiian burger joint. I hear they got some tasty burgers. I ain't never had one myself. How are they?
    Brett: They're good.
Jules: Mind if I try one of yours? This is yours here, right?
[Picks up burger and takes a bite]
Jules: Mmm-mmmm. That is a tasty burger. Vincent, ever have a Big Kahuna Burger?
    [Vincent shakes his head]
Jules: Wanna bite? They're real tasty.
    Vincent: Ain't hungry.
Jules: Well, if you like burgers give 'em a try sometime. I can't usually get 'em myself because my girlfriend's a vegitarian which pretty much makes me a vegitarian. But I do love the taste of a good burger. Mm-mm-mm. You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with cheese in Hawaii?
    Brett: No.
    Jules: Tell 'em, Vincent.
Vincent: A King Kamehameha Royale with cheese.
Jules: A King Kamehameha Royale with cheese! You know why they call it that?
Brett: Because of the metric system?
Jules: Check out the big brain on Brett! You're a smart motherfucker. That's right. The metric system. What's in this?
    Brett: Sprite.
Jules: Sprite, good. You mind if I have some of your tasty beverage to wash this down?
    Brett: Go right ahead.
    Jules: Ah, hit the spot.

Perfect. A great scene well suited to and edited for the occasion.

Roberts looks like a Buffoon? That is an insult to Buffoons everywhere!

Remember when Cokie was caught using a rear projection to make viewers think she was standing in the snow?

Plain and simple, the woman is a professional liar.

Torie Clarke was right on the money. "Obama beat The Clintons which is no easy feat."

did any of you actually listen to what she really said, instead of just the bit in quotes? she said "i know his grandmother lives there, and i know its a state, but it LOOKS LIKE some sort of exotic foreign place." im all for hitting these guys when they screw up, but this wasnt nearly as bad as its made to sound from the short bit of the quote in this item. i expect this sort of thing from republicans, that is, using carefully selected parts of quotes to make it sound like someone said something they didnt, but we're supposed to be the honest ones.

South Florida looks pretty exotic too. For that matter, so does Lancaster County, PA. Both places are home to a lot of people who don't even speak English as their first language.

Speaking as a person who lives in this "foreign exotic place," I find Cokie Roberts's comments quite insulting and foolish. Barack Obama was born and spent most of his youth here in Hawaii and he has been coming back almost once a year to visit friends and family. It is as natural a thing in the world to make such trips to your home of birth and youth. I wish I could afford (and discipline my spending) to be able to do the same, to visit the home of my youth in Illinois.

(psst - Cokie's mother and father were both Senators from Louisiana - ask her how often she's been to New Orleans for vacation, and if she thinks some people might think NOLA is foreign and exotic because they have a funny accent round those parts)

And if he went elsewhere to vacation, Cokie would be questioning why he wasn't visiting his grandmother.
  • bluestockton · 1 year ago
Cokie wasn't the only asinine talking head on TV yesterday. I woke up from a nap to hear someone on MSNBC (couldn't tell who) berating Obama for taking a vacation at all! Good grief, the man has been campaigning nonstop all year, and he NEEDS a rest. Americans are paying more attention to the Olympics than to politics right now -- probably the reason Edwards decided to 'fess up on the day of the opening ceremonies.

Did Cokie criticize her dear leader Dubya, when he took those month long vacations in Texas? If I am correct, Bush was supposed to be on vacation for about 500 days, during the past 7 years. Cokie is getting old, and unable to think straight. After months and months of campaigning, Obama deserves to go home and visit his grandmother wherever she may be. It is none of Cokie's business, where Obama spends his vacation.

Looks like Cokie Roberts is following Geraldine Ferraro in the line of "once repsected women who go whacky in their later years." Is this senility, or is it just the same thing that happened to my own mother? As she got older she stop censoring herself, and the crazy wild stuff she always thought about just started flowing out of her mouth.

Obama's lucky he didn't go to the Grand Canyon. Cokie would have said that since it's in McCain's backyard, Obama was acting as if he's already president--"presumptuous," dontcha know (the new code word for "uppity").

Cokie Roberts has a brief political comment each Monday on NPR. This morning, she remarked that Obama was running a political risk by vacationing in Hawaii, which might be perceived, she said, as "somewhat exotic". She usually annoys me with the superficiality of her comments: lazy and poorly thought out, of the "first thing in the morning after a late night" type. That she said the same thing later on ABC indicates that she did some thinking about it and nevertheless thought it was worth repeating. This is nothing more than a McCain talking point; so why does NPR keep her on, week after week?

This is the text of the email I sent to This Week:

Would Cokie Roberts please tell me the type of drugs she is scoring, because the comments she made about the Obama vacation in Hawaii could only have been made under the influence of a very powerful narcotic. Or rampant stupidity, which Ms. Roberts has proved she possesses in spades. Hey, Cokie, when are you going to buy that furnished condo in Myrtle Beach for Obama's grandmother so he doesn't have to visit her in that "foreign" state of Hawaii?

They must be catching a lot of flak about her comments, because I tried to send it 5 times and each time it wouldn't go through.
Roberts' comments illustrate why you cannot trust the traditional media during this election. Roberts, Broder, Scarborough, Matthews, Brooks - none of these bloviating dinosaurs has any idea whatsoever about the average American and their situations in this time of Bush. They are so entrenched in the political life of D.C that they can't see beyond the Beltway. Thank goodness for the Internet! We finally have a way to make them eat their words - look what happened to Milbank, who is quietly on his way to becoming a non-entity because of his elitist attitude towards his critics.

jjttll makes a good point, below. Let's keep our debate accurate and leave the fictious "facts" to the Replicans.
