AMERICAblog: According to Bush, Basra was a "defining moment" for Iraq. It defined the leadership of Al Sadr -- which McCain said was on the wane.

OK, are we to believe that these "senior moments" will subside the longer he's President?

Why should I care more about Iraq than the United States? More Gay people are dying in the United states because of homophobia, than US soldiers die in Iraq. Gay suicide is an epidemic. Gays drink or drug themselves to death because of Homophobia. And Obama loves Gay hating preachers. Look at the newest investigative journalism piece about Obama's closeness with Meeks, one of the biggest Gay Hating Preachers in America.

It's the same old bullshit from the Bush Administration....when will it end? The price of everything is going through the roof and this fucker (GWB) keeps spending money on a war that will never end. It's got to be a well-planned conspiracy that will ultimately destroy the Country. Of course it won't hurt the rich....................
When will the American people say this is enough and put these bastards in jail!

The anti-Christ will be a man in his forties of Muslim decent, who will deceive the nations with persuasive language, and have a massive Christ-like appeal............the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, will destroy everything................according to the book of Revelations.
    Now who might this be?
  • reflux1000 · 1 year ago
I hope your being snarky cause the Book of Revelations does not say anything about age, being of Muslim decent (there was no "muslim"when the book was written). The Anti-Christ is from some part of Europe that was ruled by the Roman Empire,so there goes your Obama linking "now who might that be?" question to the Anti-Christ.

bullitt: "Now who might this be?"

    Is it Ringo Starr?
  • Sarah B. · 1 year ago
    Dave

Sorry -- but according to bullitt's criteria Ringo Starr can't be the anti-Christ -- too Jewish.

OMG -- maybe bullitt is referring to Barack Obama! Do you suppose?

Since bullitt seems utterly confused about the difference between ethnic origin and religious tradition, I believe that I may be on to something there.

But, a man in his forties of Kenyan and Kansan descent, who happens to be a Christian, really is a bit of a stretch – even for bullitt!

...according to the book of Revelations. Now who might this be?

    bullitt

Okay, I give up -- who might the anti-Christ be?

You say that the anti-Christ will be a “man in his forties of Muslim descent.”

But since most biblical scholars date the writing of the Revelations texts at somewhere between 68-69 CE to 95-96 CE – and the Prophet Muhammad wasn’t born until c. 570 CE – how could the writer(s) of Revelations have known about Muslims since the religion didn’t exist at the time they wrote the texts?

It’s not Muqtada al-Sadr, because he is not a man in his forties -- he will only be 35 in August 2008.

It’s not Osama bin Laden, because he just turned 51.

Actually, the term “descent” refers to one’s ethnic origins, i.e. Arab, Persian, Pakistani, Indian, Afghan, Indonesian, or African, to name but a few populations that are predominantly, but not exclusively, Muslim.

Consequently, being a Muslim refers to one’s religious tradition, not his or her ethnic origin.

But aside from all that factual and scholarly stuff – who is the anti-Christ? I’m dying to know.

    Is it Cat Stevens?

    Dave

    Hah! Revealed at last!

Still, Cat Stevens is certainly low key for the anti-Christ -- I would have anticipated so much more.

We atheists have such high expectations for the anti-Christ -- we want magic and fireworks and miracles, at the very least, dammit! Otherwise, what good is he?

PS -- I just looked up Cat Stevens on Wiki and he's 60 years of age. Oh, well.

Maybe Bullitt is talking about Bush, and he just got the age and "of Muslim descent" wrong? LOL.

Oh-oh, the Apostle John said in the Bible that anyone who didn't believe in Christ was the anti-Christ[s]. And, according to John, there were many anti-christs.

Guess that means that us atheists are all anti-Christs. Who knew? And what a disappointment in the fireworks department.

    Cat Stevens is 60?

That would make me about a thousand years old.

    Sheez.

Actually, I think that makes you the anti-Methuselah.

Didn't he live 900 years? At least that's what George Gershwin asserted when he wrote "Ain't Necessarily So" for Porgy and Bess.

I put my money on bullitt as the anti-Christ -- enough said.

But, I have another campaign bumper sticker:

The vain McCain is strictly on the wane.

By Jove, I think I've got it -- and it can be easily set to music -- just think about it. Could be quite catchy on YouTube...like an irritating ring-tone that drives the listener mad!

No, apparently, the Rev. Jerry Falwell, who knows about these things, thinks the anti-Christ will be Jewish. So Ringo Starr is still in the running, except for his age and religion according to Bullitt. But has anyone seen Bullitt's religiousity credentials yet?
  • Sarah B. · 1 year ago
    LeslieB

Well, if Jerry Falwell said it -- whatever it is and especially on the TV -- then it must be true.

I am increasingly convinced that bullitt is the anti-Christ -- he, she, it seems to qualify according to any criteria that anyone cares to apply.

Otherwise, why would he, she, it come into an online discussion like this and drop such a teaser and then run away when challenged? Typical anti-Christ behavior, if you ask me.

    Come on, bullitt -- we've got you're number....fess up!

McCain: "Sadr's influence has been on the wane."

No, the Bush administration helped turn a relatively obscure Shia cleric into a monster, who's been responsible for much of the fighting. Witness the sudden surge in civilian Iraqi deaths, up about 31%, since the Mahdi Army resumed hostilities primarily directed at the US presence. And the primary reason for the ceasefire in the first place was to wait out the US "surge."

    So much for success.
  • fostert · 1 year ago
I'm not so sure Sadr is so obscure. His father was the most respected Ayatollah in Iraq. He is less accomplished, for sure. But he's in Qom studying to become an Ayatollah as we speak. Anyone know how much longer he needs to study? Can he be done in time for the elections? That would really change things if he could finish it up by then.

First, check out this brief video from English Language Aljazeera of a recent exclusive interview with Muqtada al-Sadr – it comes toward the end of the clip – and is from this past weekend. It is the first interview that Muqtada al-Sadr has given to the media since he moved to Iran to continue his clerical studies. He looks extremely well – appears to have lost weight and trimmed his beard and has acquired a more refined look than he had during his radical “firebrand” days:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a4s458mDMs

Second, here is an excellent piece that was published by Aljazeera last December that answers all of your questions about Muqtada al-Sadr’s education and study to become an ayatollah in general:

    Muqtada al-Sadr's power grab
    http://www.aljazeera.com/news/newsfull.php?newi...

Now Sadr is trying to burnish his religious credentials, which would make him an even more formidable force in Iraqi life. After he attains the title of ayatollah -- the second-highest clerical position in Shia Islam -- Sadr can issue his own fatwas, or religious rulings, and he will no longer have to defer to senior clerics. He will also be able to teach other clergymen, and his followers must obey his rulings.

Sadr's aides told the Associated Press that he is on track to attain the status of ayatollah by 2010, or even sooner. That would be a remarkable fast-tracking of the normally rigid system of Shia scholarship. In the Shia hierarchy, Sadr is a low-level cleric, several ranks and many years away from attaining the title of ayatollah. It's not even clear that he truly reached the status of hojat al-Islam, which is what his supporters call him -- more out of respect for his leadership than his religious achievement. In normal circumstances, it can take two decades for a cleric to establish the record of teaching and deep study of Islamic law required to become an ayatollah.

Actually, I think that Muqtada al-Sadr is a thoroughly fascinating individual and a formidable leader even now at the age of 33, and he will be that much more so as he matures and completes his religious studies. And he has enormous popular support in Iraq while al-Maliki is regarded as Bush's puppet, which, of course, he is.

McCain Gets Iraq Facts Wrong Again: Says Sadr — Not Maliki — ‘Asked’ For Ceasefire

Does McCain Know what he is talking about? It seems he does not have a grasp on any issues.

Someone tell me what does he know about Iraq.

Bullit sure went down "with a bullit" with his moronic misinformation. The only scary part, I'm sure he could tell a group of folk that were not all that educated, or versed, the same thing and they'd get goose bumps thinking of it.

ON the OTHER hand, wait a sec...the fundamentalists suddenly became pro-Israel because they believe it is needed for End-of-days (I mean folks...seriously, xtian fundies do not love Jews...most of their history time they called them "Christ-killers" [again, seriously misinformed which is their forte]) because they lust for armegeddon, so if we let THIS particular smear attempt get spread in certain areas, voila...suddenly we get the fundie vote because they believe it gets us closer to the big finish.

30% of Americans still believe anything they hear on the radio or tv. Because they can't read the print medium is useless to them. They depend on Rush and their preacher and this idiot McCain. They only believe that liberals lie and cheat on their wives because Faux and Rush never report any of that stuff. If they do hear about Vitter or Craig it is a liberal conspiracy to make the Republicans look bad. We have had 8 years of rule by an imbecile no reason the public should want anyone higher on the food chain than Chimpy.

Did you know that Basra is actually a "Sister City" with Detroit? Seriously.

Now, I thought those brave Brits had gotten control enough over the city that they turned it over to the Iraqi government. I guess that didn't work out so good.
