AMERICAblog: After saying yesterday that Gwen Ifill was fine moderating the VP debate, confused McCain now says it's a problem

  • henrythefifth · 1 year ago
To paraphrase Olbermann last night...if the McCain camp did not know about Gwen Ifill's book until yesterday, they are MORONS!

It was in the conservative Washington Times in late July....before they agreed to her.

It was reported in Time Magazine in Mid August and they did not object even then.

Once again I guess, John McCain, who agreed Ifill was fine yesterday, does not speak for his own campaign.

they should check the podium before the debate starts, McPappy may be hiding in Sarah's "helping" her (or sleeping)

off-topic ,but this is what it means to have good government. this is what it means to be proud to work for the government. this is what it means to be proud to work for the people. this is good government we need and can have when we genuinely care for each other... oh, and this person works for a FDR - created entity. We seem to talk alot lately about FDR now? From 96 to 06 the reich-wing controlled congress and senate for 1st time since the 1920's. FDR picked up thier last mess. Since we don't learn from history, who will pick up the mess now?

Article - quote is warren buffett:
And he singled out Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Chairman Sheila Bair for particular praise for her work dealing with recent crises at Washington Mutual (WM, Fortune 500) and Wachovia (WB, Fortune 500). Washington Mutual collapsed and, in a deal brokered by the FDIC, was immediately sold to JPMorgan Chase (JPM, Fortune 500). Similarly, regulators orchestrated the sale of Wachovia's banking assets to Citigroup (C, Fortune 500) in order to prevent a failure there.

"In my book she stands higher than any CEO I know of in America today," he said, a statement met by applause by the women executives attending the Summit. To top of page

Want to see $85 billion of taxpayer dollars disappear in a day?

Watch what happens if AIG decides to file bankruptcy.

The dumbest one on The View, the not so deep thinker, Hasslebeck,, said that Palin did not say what kind of magazine/newspaper she read, because, get this, she did not want to endorse any of those publications!!!!! Now I am sure that this nitwit must really be getting her talking points from Hannity, or even the McCain campaign. It looks like Hasslebeck is unable to think for herself, if she did, she would not have made a moronic statement like that.

This should give you some indication how Palin debates. Someone who has debated her 20 times say she usually generalizes her answers, and bluffs her way out of it...

Now I have heard it all! McCain now blaming LIFE for his falling poll numbers. This just about tops crazy McCain's whole thought process, blame the press, blame the voters, blame life in general. McCain needs a dose of reality, his poll numbers are falling because Obama is a better candidate and doesn't need gimmicks to get elected.

(CNN) – John McCain said Thursday that Barack Obama’s poll numbers are rising as the economy seems to sink "because life isn’t fair.”

“He certainly did nothing for the first few days,” McCain told Fox News Thursday. "I suspended my campaign, took our ads down, came back to Washington, met with the House folks and got on the phone, and also had face-to-face meetings.”

Serious question: What happens to the election if McCain suffers some kind of stroke or meltdown? Are the Republicans allowed to replace him? Has this ever happened in our history?
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
Tom Eagleton was replaced as veep in 1968. McGovern was the nominee and I think he met with DNC officers and they chose Sargent Shriver.

We should trust Paulson with $700 billion of taxpayer dollars?

Remember Paulson loaned $85 billion of taxpayer dollars AIG. AIG owes $20 billion to Goldman Sachs.

Guess what happens if AIG files for banruptcy (which they can and may very well do any day, check with Harry Reid). Want to watch $85 billion of taxpayer dollars lost in one day? Since the governent dollars are unsecured, that is what will happen if AIG files bankruptcy. Goldman Sachs' $20 billion of debt will get paid
before the taxpayers will get repaid their $85 billion outlay in bankruptcy.

What creditor other then the governent trying to protect Goldan Sach's $20 billion exposure to AIG debt would loan a company $85 billion without being the most senior debtholder?

Put that in you pipe and soke it when considering whether $700 billion more should go out the taxpayers' door.
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
AIG is one of the relatively 'good investments' in the whole debacle. Did you know AIG insures like 90% of the airlines? Did you know the us gov't is getting a piece of the company, and nearly 10% return for the loans? In the long run, this will most likely be a good investment for the gov't, bankrupcy or not. This is very much the least of our worries...
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
OK captain finance, please estimate AIG's credit default exposure from a collateral standpoint resulting from the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy and the government's seizure of Freddie
    Mac and Fannie Mae?

Also, a couple of more questions. Can AIG can still file for bankruptrcy relief? If yes, please confirm or deny that the taxpayer's $85 million dollars is subordinate to, inferior to and will be paid after Goldman Sach's at least $20 million secured position in AIG.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Also, what other creditor, other than a single person acting for the government trying to protect Golkdman Sachs, would enter into such a deal? If Paulson represented a private entiiy and entered into such a deal so contrary to the interests of this enetity and so favorable to another the SEC would bring charges.

It's apparent that McCain's campaign handlers know he has one foot in the grave, hence their choice of Palin. That's a perfect way to set up another puppet regime such as we've had for almost 8 years. That said, with this country in its worst condition in 80 years, we have the two clowns competing against one another to lead this country for the next four years. With 300 million people residing in this country, please don't expect me to accept that we have been offered the cream of the crop.

Has anyone considered the fact that we are expecting Palin to bomb tonight, and expectations are low, that we may be unpleasantly surprised that she is able to bluff her way, and that tomorrow, the press might say she won?

I am sure the Rethuglican spinners are all ready, to try and influence the press, into thinking that Palin did a magnificient job. People are so dumb in this country, all she has to do is turn up, and say a few words for them to be impressed.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
She will show some charisma and charm, she is renown for, as long as she can keep her answers short and sweet, she should be fine. She will get in very big trouble if she has to clarify her positions or get into details, then she will go off the train tracks. The debate format keeps it difficult to have long discussion, and she can spend most of her time throwing out strawman arguments to keep Biden explaining his position. McCain did this in his debate with Obama. This is at least a time killer, and puts the emphasis on Biden rather than Palin.

the difference with the Alaska debates which were more roundtable discussions and she had notes, and this, is she has to be much more extemporaneous.

Early on, when folks joked about McCain actually meaning to say, "PAWLENTY" for his running mate but misspoke and said PALIN instead was just that. - A joke.

Now? Seems John only stands for the place that he's not.

You write: So when John McCain says "they" he means "himself."

And, by his own testimony, he's not rich. I sure do wish I was "not rich" to the degree that John McCain is not rich.

    OT:
An M4 machine gun sent to Iraq by the Blackwater private security firm somehow disappeared from the company's storage facility in Baghdad and was later discovered during a US military operation, apparently against suspected insurgents, people familiar with the situation have told ABC News.
The incident, in 2006, has been kept secret until now but it raised more questions about Blackwater's operations in Iraq.

Allegations that Blackwater shipped weapons and silencers to Iraq without proper licensing are already under investigation by a federal grand jury in North Carolina, according to people familiar with the case.

Secrets, secrets and more secrets. I'll be so glad when the Bush regime comes to an end. I'm so glad the media is finally reporting some of this shit.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
M4's aren't machine guns, they are shorter barrel assault rifles. (carbines) with 5.56 NATO rounds. The machine guns used in combat are most likely the M249, with the M-240s used in helicopters given they have a heavier round (7.62 round)

M4s are used by special ops for close combat fighting, given the shorter barrel and more stopping power than HK series of submachine guns with 9mm rounds. (unless they used hollow point or soft tip rounds, which are against the Hague convention for warfare)

    Sorry for double post.

But as long as I am here, word has it that Sarah will attack Biden with a bunch of canned right wing attacks learned in her recent VP 101 debate crash course. This may be. I can't help but wonder if a woman who has demonstrated abject stupidity expressing herself thus far will sound even remotely credible in her new shoes tonight? To what extent will she attack? What will happen when she needs to defend her attacks?

Biden should debate her with the same vigor of any VP nominee. To do less would be an insult to the office and to women.

I think we need McCain's staff medical records. They seemed to be perpetually drunk and erratic in their thinking.

McCain and his campaign are hedging their bets if Palin flames out at the debate, and my guess he is stating this now, means the prep work may had not gone that well. They are just planting a talking point to hammer if Palin blows it, and they are going to use Ifil as their piñata.

Ifil is one of the top journalist in this country. She has shown countless times that she is truly a professional. Personally, The Repubs want to replace her and put Katrina vanden Heuvel as the moderator, so they can kick and scream on the post debate whine.
  • ikonoklast · 1 year ago
I don't know that McCain is as confused due to medical problems as he is just taking another page out of Bush's playbook. Bush has played this same game for 8 years now. I think that since the press and the public have now been so well accustomed to accepting contradictory doublespeak, McCain is just running with it.

As long as there is no real pushback of consequence in society for behavior, it doesn't matter. Flat contradictions of fact and of opinion occuring with pretence that no contradictions occured is now within the acceptable limits of political discourse in America. The Bush presidency has moved the bar of truth lower.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
I think it's within the acceptable limits of discourse for Republicans. Dems have to be consistent for a lifetime and so do their friends and ministers.
