AMERICAblog: AIG reluctantly cancels next boondoggle

  • grandma · 1 year ago
I hope they are forced to pay back the 443,000 they spent on their last boondoggle....and not with our money either.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
I do feel kind of bad for those folks.

I'm talking about the employees at the Half Moon Bay Ritz-Carlton that aren't going to make very many tips this weekend with this sudden cancellation.

Scott: Thanks for the info on ActBlue the other day. Contributed to the No on 8 cause. Went to the county clerk for the marriage license today. We were the first ones there and were followed by eight other people before we left. We ran into one of the other guys later and he said that by the time they left, it was SRO with same-sex couples getting licenses and some getting married.

Glad I could steer you back to it. I just checked and saw that it's well on it's way to $23K. John bumped it up once and that was cool but a lot of people still missed it. I sort of feel bad for assuming what he might've meant about Newsom and scolding John just a little in the comment thread. That was undeserved. The news made me a little cranky.

John was great putting that whole fundraiser together, and I was astounded by how fast everybody here chipped in. That's part of why I like it here and won't go away.

I'm so happy to hear about your experience today. And hey! What about them Nutmeggers! I'm so happy for all of them today also.

This is a deep corporate culture issue. I have a friend who used to work for AIG, and upon her promotion to regional vice president of her division, she came into a shocking level of benefits: a mink coat worth a Cadillac, endless spending accounts, trips to spas, etc. Given that their profits came from low-earning school employees, it was all a bit hard to observe. I know she worked hard and cared a great deal for her clients. But the system is broken: executive compensation in this country needs to be reined way way in.
The culture in these corporations is cult like and needs fixing. Heavier taxes on high earners would help. But part of the dynamic of Wall Street, no doubt, is that traders, CEOs, and reporters all earn similar amounts and go to the same parties. They have lost touch with the little people.

We are paying for this self enrichment with our over-priced premiums and now through Republican Socialism.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Once you start bailing out your friends? All of a sudden you have "more" friends. Paulsen got his buddies "home free". People on main street are so pissed off about this bailout that they are crunching nails. The Democrats may lose the house over this.

Obama offers best way out of economic disarray

From Hugh McColl Jr., former chairman and CEO of Bank of America:

In 49 years of living in Charlotte, I've seldom offered my opinion in writing and never submitted a piece such as this. The condition of our country compels me.

The economic disarray threatening our community and nation poses critical challenges but also presents opportunity. We can observe the presidential candidates in the crucible of crisis.

Only one of them demonstrates the needed intellect, fortitude and temperament. That is why I have decided to publicly support Barack Obama.

What is needed in Washington is sound judgment and exceptional leadership. Through the years that I've been a businessman and before that an officer in the Marine Corps, I saw what qualities make effective leaders.

Any bets on how long she'll remain on the Repub ticket? With McCains epiphany and defending Obama about being decent, she's got to go!
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Oh, she will stay. They already have a reason why she will stay.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
She has tainted the GOP ticket.

  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
    Violation of the Public Trust.

That's what has to be repeated.

Lawrence O'Donnell says this is what really matters......she has been slamming Obama and his "trust" and now we find out we CAN'T TRUST HER
  • samiinh · 1 year ago
This is great news. She broke the public trust. She'd been doing it since her day's as the mayor of Wascilla. Maybe there is a God.

Uh, not to mention the other 49 states.

We want her to stay on the ticket, we really do. The gift that keeps on giving.

This whole AIG thing hit closer to home today. All of our city teachers (we have 4 high schools alone, not to mention middle and elementary schools), had their pension plans underwritten by AIG and subsidiaries. They are meeting tonight to find out what is left and how to salvage their pensions.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Sorry; it's "abuse of Power" as defined by her enemies. She did not break state law. Soak your heads in Oklahoma moonshine and light a match for Hallowe'en.

Moscow's benchmark Micex stock index declined 61 percent since its peak in May. The global credit seizure, war with Georgia and falling commodity prices led foreign investors to pull $74 billion out of Russia since early August, according to BNP Paribas SA. While Russia's 1998 default and devaluation of the ruble eradicated savings for most of the population, this year's losses are wiping out its richest citizens' fortunes.

Let me get this straight. AIG executives wanted to spend money for advertising telling the taxpayers why it was a good thing for them to spend money on an expensive get-away after taxpayers just got through bailing them out of the mess they made? There's a realism that's settling in. These CEOs and executives are sociopaths. They have no conscience. They literally do not have the same sense of morality the rest of us do. We can't expect them to change or truly be remorseful, because they don't see any reason to. They will continue forever to do what feels good to themselves regardless of the havoc they wreak.
