#1 in the nation on rapes per capita under Sarah Palin's watch.

    talk about disrespectful towards women...
  • Rab · 1 year ago
I guess its too late to give Alaska back, dam!
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
If the McCain campaign is going to promote that Palin has "all this experience" running the State of Alaska for the last 2 years ( 20 months actually) then you have to put this statistic on her watch.
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
Again, I'm not really sure this is a winning issue, as awful and unfair as it is. I believe the campaign is aware that old racist feelings will be agitated in brining up rape and a black man in the same context. Believe me, I'm not saying it is right, just an acknowledgement of those terrible old prejudices.
  • curlytoes79 · 1 year ago
That whole Alaska separatist thing is sounding better and better. Hey, maybe Russia will take them in, seeing as how they're so close and all.
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
can it happen before the election?
  • JohnInTexas · 1 year ago
Sounds like the fine folks of Alaska have a little too much free time on their hands. Maybe they should get jobs and the state stop sending them that fat check every year.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
How come the Blue States are the lowest on the scale?

    Hmmmmm
  • dad · 1 year ago
    nice record of accomplishment.
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
Yes, but according to McCain she knows more about oil than anybody in the country!

Sounds more like she knows more about LUBE than anybody in the country.

    Depends on who's behind you.
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
If there's a republican behind you, you are probably gonna get it dry.

Certainly knows more about lube than the bush doctrine.

    Congrats, Sarah!

And she fired one law enforcement executive, Monegan, who made sexual assault a priority, and replaced him with a sexual harrasser! (and then had to fire him 2 weeks later). So much for her vaunted "executive experience"...
  • IMStubby · 1 year ago
This fact should be #1 on an ad for her "Small Town Values"
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
    OT

Reading Politico and found this. Seems Dems have jumped all over this comment from McCain, Now if they would PLEASE make an ad using the last part of that statement. "frankly, be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have"

McCain was defending his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a former mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, population 9,800. Asked by Judy Woodruff of PBS about Palin's stint as “a small-town mayor,” McCain replied: “Listen, mayors have the toughest job, I think, in America. It's easy for me to go to Washington and, frankly, be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have.”
  • nicho · 1 year ago
Not to mention that Wasilla has more registered sex offenders per capita than any city in the Lower 48. Something like one in every 25 males in Wasilla is a registered sex offender.

So, we can see why she doesn't want kids to be warned about molestation.
  • hrh · 1 year ago
Isn't it the same for incest?
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
what were these values 2 yrs ago? that's very important. also what were the values, 5, 10, 20. 40. 80 yrs ago? would be very interestting...
  • EmGD · 1 year ago
Well I guess we just heard the Palin defense: "There were just so many of them we had to charge rape victims or else the state would have gone bankrupt. Vote for me." Or something that if you factor in Arizona being at the bottom there, the they're only in the middle of the pack for rape states. Stop trying to tie explicit results to her explicit policies. John McCain was a POW.

Personally, I don't think this issue has legs. Not because it isn't outrageous, but because the extreme right are notoriously sceptical of women who claim to have been raped. They most certainly would bring up the Duke Lacrosse player being wrongly accused and suggest that if tax-payers cover these costs there is a chance that claims of rape would increase. I tend to think that many Republicans believe that if a woman claims she was raped, she is partially responsible. Similar to the way they think that if someone is on welfare, somehow they are inherently lazy. Just saying...

Gee, we can't waste taxpayer $$$ on tests for those lying sluts,* now can we? Not with those billions all tucked in cozilyy in the Alaska treasury surplus!

How about making folks hit by drunk drivers pay for the damages to the cars that hit them? Yeah, that's fair!

    ______________________________
    * Of course I didn't mean that. I was one non-lying non-slut, once upon a time...

This information must be used as part of a broader attack on the Republican view of women. I can see two ads, one on Palin and one on McCain. They would go as follows:

    1. Palin ad, will she protect women's rights and safety?

Picture of Palin in church: "Governor Palin represents an extreme view of women and their lack of rights. She is free to hold these beliefs for herself but do you want her to impose them on you?"

Governor Palin opposes the teaching of sex education other than abstinence only in Alaska's schools. (Picture of students in class) Perhaps that is one reason why Alaska has one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases and teenage pregnancy in the United States. (Flash stats for various diseases and pregnancy rate.)

Governor Palin does not believe that any women whether she be an adult or a 12 year old child should have the right to choose an abortion if impregnated from rape or incest. Alaska has the highest rate rape of any state in our country and 25% of those cases result in pregnancy. However, Governor Palin would force a twelve year old girl, brutally raped to have that child. Indeed, as Mayor,Ms. Palin would force that little child or her family to pay for the rape kit to preserve evidence to identify and prosecute the rapist. Do you honestly think she would offer to cover the medical necessary for the pregnancy?" (Against background picture of the Wassilla mayor's office.)

Think carefully this election year, the safety and health of your children depend upon it.

    2. McCain and women's rights: Picture of a very angry McCain:

Senator McCain has voted against every single bill presented to assure equality of pay for the same work between men and women. (Scroll bills voted against) Senator McCain says that he accepts the concept of equality in pay. However, in practice, he just does not care.

Senator McCain's running mate charged rape victims for the cost of rape kits essential in gathering and maintaining evidence to identify and prosecute the offender. Senator McCain voted against legislation in Congress to outlaw this practice.

Senator McCain stands on the Republican platform that would outlaw all abortion even in the case rape or incest.. Senator McCain chose a running mate who said that she would not permit abortion even if her own daughter became pregnant when raped.

Is this really the kind of support that women should have from their president and vice president?
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
    excellent, thanks..
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
Those could be some very effective ads.
  • IamSmartypants · 1 year ago
Rape statistics for Wasilla are difficult to find, but this site http://www.disastercenter.com/alaska/crime/35.htm indicates that there were only a couple of rapes per year. So Sarah Palin is saying that a city receiving thousands of dollars per capita in federal earmarks and spending millions of dollars on ill-conceived capital projects (like the community center built on land the city might or might not own), she is saying the city could afford several hundred dollars for rape kits to help capture sex offenders?

    That's messed up.
  • jcgraham77 · 1 year ago
YOu know, I wish a lot of women would own up to why they are supporting Palin. Most of my black friends will admit they are voting Obama cause he is black. I get that. I would totally vote for a gay. Whatever. But a lot of the women who would normally vote democrat can't give me a reason they are supporting Palin. Someone told me they would take note of all the stuff I forward them but they still think she is awesome. That is bizarre. And don't dare say its because she is a woman. Sheesh.
  • Pancho · 1 year ago
well it adds to the distraction that is palin so buy into that then makes everyone angry because the campaign is not on message...so I would say get the 517s on that point and let the campiagn go on with its the economy stupid memo.
  • FunMe · 1 year ago
Isn't walooka, Walla, or whatever city Palin was a Mayor from also the #1 meth city of Alaska.

Could that account for the high rapes?

And also the hate and anger Palin displayed at the RNC convention?
  • truebluecoondog · 1 year ago
Now THIS is something can be VERY useful. Coupled with the injustice of forcing rape victims to pay for their own tests is really a strong message.
  • stevetalbert · 1 year ago
It isn't a good idea to compare reported cases, as maybe Alaska actually reports more cases because they have a stricter criteria,,, so maybe they actually have a better record than, say, a state that doesn't report everything. It is better to show that she wanted Rape Victims to bear the cost of the exam so they could bring charges when that is actually something that our society for the greater good should be doing for each other. It restricts justice to only those who can pay.
  • iggy · 1 year ago
The problem with demanding that it be talked about is that you have to be ready for a response. Did they GO UP under Palin, or were they just as high or higher before?. If they didn't, it's a MISTAKE to use it as an attack, because their response is obvious, and they'll beat Obama over the head with it.
  • FuzzyandBlue · 1 year ago
Oh Scary Sarah... the fact that you so want to help perverts and violent sexual criminals become daddies by outlawing abortion even in cases of rape/incest makes a bit more sense now...... a bit more sense if I were a screechy harpy, lying, crazy beehive wearing bitch, that is.
  • Gryphen · 1 year ago
Yeah but this just measures "forcible rape". If you add in date rape, and statutory rape, and acquaintance rape we....oh never mind, Alaska is the rape capitol of the world and there is no way for me to spin our way out of it.

And the sad thing is that we have carried that unfortunate distinction since the early seventies.

I actually used to teach a women's self defense course and I can tell you that some of the stories I heard were heartbreaking.
  • derekcbart · 1 year ago
I think it is really interesting that this was the same week that Conservative-Truths.com decided to post this statistic. It was posted on Monday before this information really spread around the blogosphere. Here's the link: http://www.conservative-truths.com/comments.php...
  • Mark · 1 year ago
Remember these are reported rapes so people are feeling comfortable that they will be treated as a victim not at fault as many places do. How many cities rapes do not get reported.
