AMERICAblog: American tourists with dollars turned away from currency exchanges in Amsterdam

  • LunaStick · 1 year ago
Hillary and Obama need to bring this up in their stump speeches. American's are overall aware that the dollar's value is declining but something like this can really bring it home because I don't think enough people are truly conscience of the fact like we should. A story like this hurts our national pride and it needs to be put on Bush (and McCain by extension).
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    Stop laughing at us!

    We're just poor Americans.

    And, by the way.

Can you lend us some health care?
  • Savage8862 · 1 year ago
John, I am like you. This is an issue that Democrats can run with-the declining dollar and I am not sure why they are not bringing this issue up every time they have a chance. This is a Republican problem. The declining dollar is one of the reasons why oil prices are so high. Oil is traded under the dollar. Oil producing companies and countries must raise the price of oil to balance the losses they are experiencing with the declining dollar. Democrats aren't handed issues on silver platters too often, and when they are, they need to learn to run it---Republicans would if given the chance.

Good point John and I use this alot. The value of the dollar is in a freefall and people are ignorant of what that means. McCain is so much toast by November when the sheeple see what their inflationary lives have become. Thanks alot shrub for the fine job these last 8 years.
  • Nigel Elliott · 1 year ago
The cheap dollar is the reason oil costs so much. Oil producing countries were hurting because their commodity is traded in US dollars, so in order to buy those spanking new BMWs, oil producers had to raise the price of a barrel. As a result, Iran and Venezuela are richer than ever and buying billions in new defences preparing for another dumb invasion by Commander Coo-Coo Bananas.

    Excellent Post John.
All the US flight attendents are hit very very hard by this decline of the dollar.
Just about every scarp of food is taken of the plane by the flight attendents so they can eat on their overseas layovers. Plain old fish & chips at a fast food cost $12-15 . Can you imagine paying 15 bucks to walk into a Arthur Treachers here in the United Sates?

How would most Amerikuns know anything about exchange rates when their idea of travel is going to a Walmart in the next state.
  • Nigel Elliott · 1 year ago
    Dula,

Americans will learn soon enough, when crude oil is traded in euros instead of dollars.
  • TomJoad · 1 year ago
A little more irony...though the surge is decidedly NOT working, and the chimpenator is literally talking as if drunk or insane...if in the future, by some miracle they did become a coherent country....because we bombed them back to the stone age, if we DID build up the infrastructure in Iraq, it would be way better than the infrastructure in the US which is falling apart. They'd have the infrastructure we COULD have had, if we had used "war funds" on the US and shoring it up instead of war.
  • Bub · 1 year ago
Perhaps nothing encapsulates what the Republicans have done to the country better than the decline of the dollar. It's a wreck.

I'm still thinking this is some how tied to wanting to destroy social security and all forms of wellfare. By deflating the dollar, everything else goes up in price, depleteing the social security surplus.

If this gets much attention, I would expect right-wing talk radio to start snarking about "why would any American visit the Netherlands in the first place" and so forth. The bloviators would try to trash that country to divert attention from the real issue.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
"The dollar hovered near record lows on Monday, with one euro worth around $1.58 versus $1.47 a month ago."

And to think Credit Card companies now add 3% to any credit card transaction overseas......wanna bet that is going to be increased very soon.

Don't worry. McCain will fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you take a deep breath, and think about all the disaster that has come with Bush being in office, on EVERY SINGLE FRONT, and just go over the governments "actions", their incompetence under Bush's lack of leadership, and the war, literally the PAIN and suffering they have cost americans as well as the rest of the world, and for what? Who benefits? Corporations based in weapons, oil, corporations that at first chance "move" their offices off shore to avoid paying their share of taxes, and think again of who suffers, and who wins.

This is one messed up country right now.
  • theWalrus · 1 year ago
Guess what the Republican talking point about the disastrous ecomony is?

    "It's all Bill Clinton's fault!"

Seriousy, that's what some are beginning to parrot. Do you think the voters will be stupid enough to buy it?
  • TheOriginalLiz · 1 year ago
The GOP has pulled off what must be one of the greatest con games in history. They've turned so many of the people who are their victims into staunch supporters.

Senator Leahy calls for Clinton to withdraw
    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/3/28/85535/5...
  • Rab · 1 year ago
I wonder if the Democrat powers that be have already gotten together and set a date when Hillary is informed she is not going to be the nominee. Right after Pennsylvania? Forget what Bill is saying, that may very well be the reason they have already decided the Clintons need to leave. As much as we think politicians live in an insulated world, theyr'e not blind to what they hear around the country. Sen. Leahy for one, Sen. Bob Casey, aren't these Hillary's fellow workers. I think its already been decided or is going to be very shortly.
  • LunaStick · 1 year ago
Good for Leahy! Now it is time for more leaders in the party to make the same call. We got to focus on McCain! Come on Hillary, please end it already.
  • frommass · 1 year ago

No, no, no! It's time for Obama to get out of the race. He is breaking up the country with his slow response to condemn his racist minister. I don't believe that he has condemned him yet.

Go Hillary, she is in to win!!!!!
  • TomJoad · 1 year ago
The big irony being the meme the GOP used against Gore, that Clinton had "broken our army" and that it wouldn't be able to respond to...how many was their minimum? 4 major "actions" at once. And now generals quietly meet with Bush to pretty much let him know they are close to broken with the 2, and get ignored.

I get this sinking feeling that while Bush is cheerleading the war, if you could go inside his head he'd be like "la..la..la...diddly-bo, dum...da.dum.dum..." there is not THERE there.
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
I'm waiting for the Bush regime to print up some scrip...

That's what we'll get when the dollar loses ALL its value. And I'll bet the head of BS immediately turned his cash into Euros.

    Bastards are everywhere.
  • nicho · 1 year ago
Well, since only 10 percent of Americans have passports, it may not register with "regular Americans." And, if it does, the response will probably be something along the lines of "Well, let's just bomb those Netherlandians. They're all a bunch of ragheads anyway."
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
Well, like many "average" Americans I wanted to travel but never had the money to go beyond Toronto and Tijuana when I lived on those borders.

But I understand currency exchange and economics. So, all these snarky comments about those of us who don't have the wealth and/or time need to calm down and examine their elitist comments. I never took a real vacation in my life, either, working FT and raising 2 kids alone, often working 2 jobs. Provincialism develops from poverty or struggling to make a living for most people, not from stupidity.

    Anyone who would offer me a trip, all expenses paid, to anywhere in the world, would find me willing to leave as soon as I could get a passport. : }
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Well, I don't know if this is a story we can exploit with the average American. I just talked to one, and did the "stupid check" to see if it would work. The response, was, "So what, the dollar fluctuates all the time. This happens all the time," and this is from a Democrat, granted a Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm Democrat, but a Democrat. Anyway, I told her it does not happen all the time, and asked if she had ever been turned away from a currency exchange, and she finally "got it" and said, "Oh.... no...." One problem is we don't have a lot of Americans who had the intellectual curiosity, or ability, to travel abroad. This particular person I did the "stupid check" on has traveled, but is a product of the 1950's and desperately wants to be patriotic and bury her head in the sand.

Advice isn't worth much from people who can't spell an easy name like McCain!
  • jimfromthefoothills · 1 year ago
It is not about jet setting, international travel. It is about competing with others around the world for little things like food, oil, steel, coal and other commodities.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
This story obviously resonates with us, those who have travelled internationally AND the thinking people, but would it resonate with that group who wakes up in a new universe every morning? You know the type! The kind of person who has the memory of a goldfish and BY GOD they are gonna vote for the candidate who has prettiest damned first lady, whoever that might be!

I had this same problem in Cambodia three years ago. And it was seven year old kid who wouldn't take my dollars. I asked why and replied: "US dollar no good, it lose value. I want Thai Baht." The kid was right, the Thai Baht has gained 30% since then against the dollar.
  • Evilmumrah · 1 year ago
My husband noted yesterday that the Swiss franc is now worth more than the dollar. That is completely unprecedented in the history of the franc. When we were there several years ago it was worth thirty-five fricking cents! We are planning a trip to Ireland this fall. We kept about 500 euros from our trip to Europe last fall and are happy we did. This administration is just pitiful.
  • dula · 1 year ago
    Older and Wiser
I was referring to those Amerikuns who have no interest in learning about anyone outside their little bubble...people like George Bush. It is sad that many of those who can't afford to travel will vote Republican until their dying day. BTW, If I get the job at the airline I'm interviewing for, I will send you, for free, wherever my travel benefits will allow. Of course, at these exchange rates, your choices will be limited.
  • mike31c · 1 year ago
What a sad state of the US Dollar. I remember a time when we in the US made fun of other currency and highly inflated currency with jokes about it more useful as toilet paper then as a real currency.

They'd be burning Clinton in effigy. Are the Democrats trying to lose this election? Because, seriously, if that were the plan, they couldn't be doing a better job of it. Why isn't Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid on TV every day talking about the damage to our economy? Why isn't Barack talking about his at every opportunity?
  • bobbies · 1 year ago
Who cares about the professional campaigners Obama and Hillary. That the Senate and Congress haven't taken steps to support the dollar by rollng back tax cuts and increasing corporate, particularly oil, revenues while culling all pork shows the U.S. to be totally ignorant and corrupt. The Bear Stearnes bailout and subsequent purchase by J.P. Morgan for less than 300 million dollars shows a people that are witless and, perhaps, deserve to raped and left in the road. Our new fundamentalist, white trash Pentagon will soon bomb Iran. No one even mentions the names of the powerful families behind the destruction of our economy, the invasion of Iraq, and now Iran. Witness the monarchist, Dixieland corporate-fascist Phil Gramm advising the mentally ill McCain. The nation is delusional and is being led by cretins, killers, and theives. Discussing anything else but a possible revolution is just bullshit. This isn't politics anymore.
