AMERICAblog: Amy Goodman of DemocracyNow! arrested at GOP convention

  • ydthin · 1 year ago
Brilliant move, repukes, arrest, on camera, one of the most respected independent journalists out there today. Wow, just wow. Are the republicans trying to commit collective suicide to hasten the rapture or something?

This is either the last dying gasps of Bush/Cheney fascism--or the beginning of a fresh new Hell.

Oh yes. That Amy Goodman is sooo dangerous!
Wow, they really are fascists those Repugs.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
This is going to be big. The police have been arresting people on "suspicion" of being protesters for the last few days but this is really bad.

Are the protesters much worse in St. Paul than in Denver? I don't know. All I know is that Denver, for the most part, was quiet and most all people behaved very well.. There was a huge showing of police on every corner but they were mostly observing. There was a scuffle with a Code Pink lady, an all out scuffle with Re-Create 68 folks, and a scuffle with an obnoxious reporter doing work for Charlie Gibson. Other than that it was pretty quiet.

By contrast the St.Paul/Minneapolis convention looks like it could get really, really nasty.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Nope, the "protesters" in Denver, like the non-existant "PUMAS," were spreading the STORM TROOPER NEO-CON agenda so they were left alone. Protesters in St. Paul make Republicans look bad so they need to be SILENCED at all costs. Its easy to forget with all the Republican sloganeering that we no longer live in a "FREE" country. I've been in Europe and they are far more free than we are. I laugh every time I hear Dubya claim "They hate us for our freedoms!" Its such a joke.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I don't think they were left alone because of what they were saying. I think Denver was just smarter at handling the folks. Case in point, the almost 1,000 protesters after that concert. They did not have a permit and Denver decided to let them march as long as they were peaceful and didn't cause a riot. It ended peacefully at the Pepsi Center and both the cops and the protesters were satisfied.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
No, I disagree. I think Denver didn't "COORDINATE" with our politicized federal government like St. Paul. St. Paul is coordinating with FEDERAL STORM TROOPERS and that is why those marching "against the Republicans" are being treated like law breakers. Freedom of speech is under attack and it has EVERYTHING to do with what the citizens are saying. If you march without a permit and complain about Democrats that is okay. If you do the same and your target is the Federal Government and Republicans you get your ass busted. POLICE STATE!

If only it would be and go beyond that. The nation has been sound asleep wallowing in its false sense of security and freedom ever since that summer. All of our efforts back then panned out to nothing, ultimately, in the end with Nixon...Reagan...to the Bush Junta. Things are worse today. Back then the MSM were questioning and showing the war dead. We now live in fascism. And the people are drugged by the media with crap reality shows. Until blood runs in the streets, nothing will really change.
  • Reason0Politics1 · 1 year ago
Spot on, Bostonian. Things are MUCH worse than they seem in that sense. ALL the legislation is in place now. Complete empowerment of the "Unitary Executive", Police state Tyranny is available to them, just waiting for the trigger to be pulled. Any American can now be picked up, sequestered off to gitmo, for a few years without Miranda Rights, without even a hint of what the charges are. It's already on the books people. And Now Bush is trying to "refresh" the "state of war"... meaning all these criminal policies remain in effect.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
My prayer is that Obama will get all this repealed, restore the Fairness
Doctrine, and at least ease up on the fascism. But who knows. He may decide
to hang onto the power once he is in office. I do know one thing, however,
his SCOTUS picks will ease some of this shit down the road.

Wow. Check out this ABC video of the festivities at the GOP Convention in the Twin Cities. The most pointed and hard-hitting piece I've seen in years from a mainstream news source. Absolutely amazing. I sent a congratulatory note to Charles Gibson at ABC News. As much as we gripe about the corporate media, I think it' a good idea to give them a pat on the back when they get it right. Here's the link if you'd like to do the same -

Maybe Big Media has had enough, too. More like this, please....
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
BIG MEDIA is finally seeing the writing on the wall. They know they got on the wrong bus, and were simply trying to cover their asses. I'm not going to be patting them on the back. It took average citizens, like us, to continuously call them into account in order for them to finally awaken and realize WE'VE BECOME A POLICE STATE and Bu$hco. and NeoCon Elitist Republicans hate us for our freedoms.
  • Webster · 1 year ago
Don't hold your breath that the CorporateM$M has seen the light. My guess is that it's a temporary aberration. The exception that proves the rule.

Funny but the STORM TROOPERS didn't arrest people for Freedom of Speech in Denver!

REPUBLICANS HATE US FOR OUR FREEDOMS!
  • EllaDisenchanted · 1 year ago
Yes, they did. A friend was there with IVAW friends. There was a search warrant and police action at some protest group's meeting place. Is it true that Homeland Security pumped $50 mil into these cities?

She described Denver as a police state, and MN much worse.
  • interlude · 1 year ago
actually they did arrest peeps in denver, but they didnt invade homes
  • ThisCanadian · 1 year ago
ah, yeah... but you see... they did, dude.

    pepperspray.
    rubber bullets.
    tear gas.
    baton beatings.
    pepper balls...

full military armour & SWAT gear...

15K journalists in Denver: too bad nobody covered it with the same enthusiasm as the activist media who strayed outside the Denver AT&T PR GreenZone...

"RNC & DNC conventions: trampling of civil liberties" - PoGo Was Right (a Privacy Rights Watch blog: "Privacy news, data breaches, privacy-related events & resources from around the World.")

RNC Eve: Police Confiscate Urine, Feces, Paint, Old Tires

urine? feces? would that be implying there would be some vile bodywaste tossing (Cops & State's attorneys also implied 'Molitov cocktails' would be used by pacifist civil & privacy rights demonstrators) or is this for DRUG testing?? ...more frightening... both these body products... can be used for DNA cataloguing...

DNA & biometrics cataloguing is being carried out IN THE US & the US is demanding to have this information acquired & shared by other G8 nations.

    thanks for the 'democracy'.

the point to 'take away'? is that ALLOWING THE CIVIL & HUMAN RIGHTS violations to occur & SLIDE BY in Denver... gave the GreenLight for the RNC cops to **follow through on the corporate & ReichWing demands for a complete shutdown**

NOW the ReichWing can claim we Progressive Humanist activists & journalists were partisan by not covering the DNC abuses. & they would be somewhat correct.

basically? if we had covered the DNC with the fervour we'll apply to the escalated rights violations in St.Paul... St.Paul would not have occurred with the same wanton abandon to keep their HR dossiers tidy with their corporate sponsorship.

if we had thrown our support behind the peaceful demonstrators outside the Denver AT&T PR GreenZone... St.Paul may not have occurred.

tragically? in both cases *throwing the peaceful demonstrators to the lions was to political advantage to the Democratic strategists*

why? ignoring the Public in Denver bolstered the MainStream Media impression that the entire Nation was behind the AT&T Convention. it also gave the St.Paul cops the impression that it was full-steam ahead & snapped them off their leashes.

    Not MY Amy!

Well, little do they know they just got a national radio journalist.

In this case they will find out that they messed with the wrong liberal journalist!
    THEY WILL PAY!
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
What makes you think that cops ever listen to Pacifica. Most of them would turn in or shoot a family member they caught listening to Pacifica or a Pacifica affiliate. They have no idea who Amy Goodman is, to them she is just a loud-mouthed podunk journalist from some backwoods media outlet. Thank God! If they actually knew who she was, they would have shot her and damn the consequences, couldn't be as bad as getting rid of her. She has to be one of the top liberal journalists in the nation with a vast following ... on the left. And I say, she has the courage of a pride of lions.

Here's an update from Democracy Now!

    http://www.democracynow.org/blog/2008/9/1/updat...

Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher told Democracy Now! that Kouddous and Salazar were arrested on suspicion of rioting, a felony. While the three have been released, they all still face charges stemming from their unlawful arrest. Kouddous and Salazar face pending charges of suspicion of felony riot, while Goodman has been officially charged with obstruction of a legal process and interference with a “peace officer.”

Democracy Now! forcefully rejects all of these charges as false and an attempt at intimidation of these journalists. We demand that the charges be immediately and completely dropped.

Democracy Now! stands by Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar and condemns this action by Twin Cities’ law enforcement as a clear violation of the freedom of the press and the First Amendment rights of these journalists.

During the demonstration in which the Democracy Now! team was arrested, law enforcement officers used pepper spray, rubber bullets, concussion grenades and excessive force against protesters and journalists. Several dozen demonstrators were also arrested during this action, including a photographer for the Associated Press.

Amy Goodman is one of the most well-known and well-respected journalists in the United States. She has received journalism’s top honors for her reporting and has a distinguished reputation of bravery and courage. The arrest of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar and the subsequent criminal charges and threat of charges are a transparent attempt to intimidate journalists.

I would have to say it's never a good idea to harass, arrest, or otherwise mess with a well known and popular news person.
The Republicans just keep getting more and more stupid.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
Getting more and more stupid because the Jeebus Bible Thumpers have taken control of the party and those with high quality educations have been pushed out or to the back. Anyone who thinks dinosaurs walked the earth with people is not terribly good at thinking straight or making decisions.

What is it about the RNC that tips off cops that they are free to go berserk and start wearing their jackboots?

Reading about the "raids" previous to this, was enough to make our counries forefathers spin like tops in their graves.
  • DCinDC · 1 year ago
Amazing! Who will be there in the streets when the GOP comes for you?
  • TomJoad · 1 year ago
The thing that pisses me off no end about this...NO ONE EVER asks the goddamned candidates about this. IF they do, they won't "comment on ongoing investigations" but one could certainly press them on if they believe in preemptive raids as well, in assault teams descending on peaceable protesters, on the constutution and if they think it is "Obsolete" or as president would they uphold their OATH to it?

No media folk ask them this, and they never get asked it in debates, but this obviously affects ALL of us, if we are not "allowed" (actually, if we LET ourselves be cowed. Our constitution lists these as "GOD-given" inalieble rights. Meaning, it isn't by THEIR GOOD GRACE that we are "allowed" to protest, it means goddamit that we have a right no one can take from us to be able to protest.

It's not even "use it or lose it", it's not "well...these are much more dangerous times" (bull, people faced death by many ways in 1776 as well...not least British soldiers, sickness, etc.) and death is death...
  • Reason0Politics1 · 1 year ago
Tom is right. Hmm..has anybody asked either "will you actually follow your Oath"... or have scumbag laywers interpret it? Will you return the illegal process of ignoring Law and being "Unitary" back? ...I doubt it. Certainly not mcsame, and sadly, I suspect neither will Obama.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
You have all expressed your outrage which is great but if you read the comments made that they can't do this to a nationally know broadcaster and that big things will happen. Guys, nothing will happen. Name the politician who will go on camera and say a single thing about this--I can't. Just as the Bush administration and the numerous press secretaries fucked with Helen Thomas for asking the awkward question. This is about controlling us, partitioning us, making one group hate another group, about instilling fear into the poor and middle class that illegal immigrants are taking their jobs. They do not give a shit what we think. Don't think for a second the police were any less likely to arrest and detain for no cause in Denver. The GOP attracts the demonstrators because of their continuing illegal activities and ignoring the constitution also don't forget that it is Minnesota a decidedly Republican bastion with a lunatic for a governor. We live in dangerous times and on a daily basis you can see the police across the country pushing the envelope on how much force they can exert. Look at the taser incidents in the past year. Look at campus security guards carrying guns and tasers and using them without anyone questioning the need for or the guidelines for use.
I am appalled that this happened, but, don't hold your breath for anyone in power to say a word or investigate or frankly to give a shit.

  • blogmob · 1 year ago
something is going to come of this? i doubt it. it is not being reported, and if/when it is, it'll be a tiny notice in a big article about protester violence. who among us will do anything other than write a caustic comment here? the police have huge latitude to arrest anyone, and to hold them for a day or two or 3. no judge will mess with that "right." they are also now beginning to confiscate the cameras of the people who dare to record these events - watch for that to expand.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
I hate to be a cynic, but this has happended over and over the last few years. What will be done? Not a god damn thing, save and except for numerous postings on various sites and e-mails of outrage, all of which e-mail communication will viewed in real time by the FBI (with the able assistance of the NSA and telco provider) without a warrant and with the firm backing of both candidates.
