Ha! I was trying to describe this commercial to a younger friend on Monday. I'm not entirely sure why I too recall this ad as frequently as I do - something is afoot....

How can something so wrong be so right? Maybe we should play it backwards.

The fact that you love this commercial makes me adore you all the more. LOL. Now here are some of my favorites, although a little before my time. Ha! Safe for work.

True story.
I remember kids in our grade school lunch room imitating this commercial and being pulled one by one by the lunch ladies to stand in line to go to the principal's office.
OMG I loved this commercial. And I find myself saying, "Ancient Chinese secret, huh?" all the time, in the same intonation as the actress in the commercial.

I do too, and people don't get it. But I can't stop :) I can't believe that woman's intonation has stuck with us for 30 years.

According to Wikipedia, the woman playing the wife was Anne Miyamoto, who was actually Japanese-American, not Chinese. This makes it even funnier to me, I think.

I remember that one well, but I wasn't so impressed with it as you apparently were.

Here's why I'll never forget this commercial: I'm an Asian male, and for about the first 15 years of my life, this was the only Asian guy I ever saw on television. EVER. Since then there have been occasional appearances through the years like the sidekick Sam on "Quincy, M.E.," but otherwise, a big zip. Part of the sad legacy of racism and (continued) exclusion in the mass media in this country, though roles on "Heroes" and "Lost" have made things marginally better these days.
You guys have no idea what it is like to grow up without seeing any decent, unstereotyped representations of yourself in the media. It's like having no heroes.

How could you not have seen Mr. Sulu on Star Trek (the original series)?

4 minutes and 33 seconds in. (see also--the shortest MST3K host segment, and Joel blows it)
