Chris, you are the only journalist who draws the lines between the energy demand in this country and currency devaluation. Why can't that fathead Tim Russert go to bea.gov and look at the US balance of payments.

I even fault god-damn Al Gore for bitching about global warming. Who the fuck cares??? Jimmy Carter had it correct back in the 70's, this country will be bankrupted by its energy demand.

Chris, once again you da man. Keep it up.

    Who killed the electric car?
  • angryspittle · 1 year ago
It was as if blacksmiths had conspired to kill the automobile between 1890 and 1920.

As with seemingly everything else this is becoming worse than I had imagined it would be.

"Jimmy Carter had it correct back in the 70's, this country will be bankrupted by its energy demand."

Right on! The waste I see is just sickening. Do stores really need their signs lit up at night when they are not open? Do people need big-ass houses and large pick up for personal vehicles? And if you are planning on having a large family do yourself and everyone else a favor and watch "Human Footprint" on the National Geographic channel on On Demand.

Let's put an energy surcharge on the McMansions and then lets go shopping. 80% of the volume at grocery stores can be eliminated. Most of what we buy is water in big heavy packages. Laundry detergent can be concentrated and deliver the same results. How about another charge on weight of items.

One more real estate tax on large cars and SUV's that eat up all of our precious highway real estate.

I wonder how they feel about repulsive republican policies now? The repukes probably would just blame it on the Democrats since Faux news is starting their lie machine right about now.

The common man is getting squeezed. No healthcare, lack of jobs much above minimum wages, jobs now only in major cities or suburbs (50 miles to Pittsburgh from my town), gas at $4 a gallon ($20 a day for gas), few benefits, house devalued so trying to sell to move closer is most times another loss. Meanwhile the politicians who are elected to represent us and pass legislation for the common good are too busy looking after their common good and the good of the lobbyists and corporations. Explain something someone. When oil was $25 a barrel, gas was $2 a gallon. Its now $117 a barrel and only $3.65 a gallon shouldn't that make gas $9.35 a gallon?

Its a game, an illusion. Cheney and the boys have the Saudis holding the extra dough till they are out of office. If you think for a minute the oil producting nations are going to do anything to reduce the price of oil then you also believe that Bush won far and square in 2 elections.

The insane costs associated with gasoline has really begun to hit recent college grads. College grads often either live a little far outside of cities so that they can get cheaper housing or they live in the city where they might not need a car. With the price of gasoline being as high as it is, I've noticed that many recent college grads have decided to do away with having a car altogether and are living in the cities.

In the short term we can do conservation. In the medium term we can do liquefied coal and 'french' style nuclear energy, in the longer term we can implement a 'moon shot' approach towards energy development and we can slowly begin to redesign our cities.

For instance: create a public transportation network with a hierarchy of rail transport (middle class people have a clear preference for rail transport over buses): Street Cars that have stops every half mile in urban areas, Light rail with stops every two miles, and heavy rail with stops ever 5 to 10 miles - and make it all free. How to pay for this - with the increased revenue from property taxes from the increase in the value of land for people who live near transportation nodes. Also, higher taxes for excessive use of gasoline. Where you have choice in transportation, this makes no sense, but where you have a valid choice this makes lots of sense.

I don't know if anyone else is seeing this around the country, but in our little burg south of Austin independent gas stations are no longer carrying regular and super, only premium gasoline now. I don't know what that means, but thought I'd mention it.

Chris, the fall of the dollar is not "another issue'", it is THE issue.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad I ride a bike.
I just had to put 35$ into my bike.
I had my wheels set to true and a new chair ring put in. (that is bike lingo) It will keep my bike running for about 6 months. That same amount of gas will last me maybe a week.
    Get a BIKE!
    You will enjoy the ride.

If you think the loss of 2 million BOPD in Nigeria is just an incident? Then you can turn in your merit badge. Economists have predicted that it will take gasoline prices between 10 and 15 dollars per gallon before the US voter wakes up and realizes that we need to have our own secure energy supplies.
