More about the Yule Goat

For many years New York has had a Liberal party. It was founded by liberals who didn't want to vote for Tammany candidates while voting for FDR. William Buckley and his brother James later founded New York's Conservative party as a haven for conservatives who didn't want to vote for liberal "Rockefeller" Republicans.
Over time, the differences that caused creation of the Liberal and Conservative parties faded. In practice, most Democrats also obtained the Liberal party nomination and appeared on the ballot as "D/L", whole most Republicans obtained the Conservative party nomination and appeared on the ballot as "R/C".
Not in Albany. In the Albany, New York area, the leaders of the Democratic party were culturally conservative throwbacks, and the county Republican party was almost a nonentity. As a result of these two factors, it was Albany's DEMOCRATS who often obtained the Conservative nomination and appeared on the ballot as "D/C". In addition, Albany Democrats have often become competitive in the Republican suburbs by obtaining the Conservative party line in their local races.
It appears to me that at least one Democratic candidate in this race is attempting to appear culturally conservative to appeal to Albany's older Democrats -- the ones most likely to vote in the primary.
I'm not at all surprised to see this, especially when you realize that ultra right wing perennial candidate Joe Sullivan is also in this race. This guy is a neanderthal Corning Democrat turned Republican turned back to Democrat who also used to head the fanatical Right To Life Party in the Capital Region, despite the fact that he was never actually registered as a RTLer. This type of sneaky attack bigotry is right up Sullivan's alley, and something I wouldn't put past him at all. It would also serve his nefarious purposes, as his only hope of scoring above the 5% level tomorrow would be to energize the few old line 'Machine' Democrats who are still alive, and this kind of 'gay baiting' and bigotry would resonate with these half wits. So let's not jump to conclusions and point fingers at others, when the foul stink of Sullivan is right there under our noses.
