Now, let us hope (and work toward) this amendment gets drowned for November! I will certainly do my part.

There needs to be a ballot iniative where they can't harass us gays anymore. It's hateful and useless.

How do they know you're gay?

How would a ballot initiative keep people from harassing you?

Colorado's Amendment 2 was behind in the polls right up to election day when it passed.... When asked publicly a majority of people will say that they are against discrimination, but when they get into a ballot booth and nobody but their conscience is watching things change.

sorry, I don't know what that means... I don't do much commenting on here, so this went right by me.
I was not trying to be a concern troll or anything. I just remember how hard we fought and rallied against Amendment 2, and how we were WINNING and we were going to show those fundies and the future was ours. and then we lost... it was crushing.
I guess what I am saying is don't be complacent. This needs to be fought hard right to the end no matter what the polls say. I am not suggesting this isn't being done either. Just don't take a lead in a poll as a victory...

The difference is that there was no quantifiable economic issue (good or bad) for Colorado at the time of Amendment 2. In California, there will be six months of cash flow funneling into the California economy due to gay weddings. Don't under estimate the power of the purse to guide people in their voting no matter how much they disagree with something.
Additionally, the economic impact of the amount of litigation that will occur if the State of California rules all of the gay marriages performed before Prop. 8 are null and void. They are anticipating 50,000 couples wed. That's potentially 100,000 litigants that have standing to sue the state (not to mention the counties that served as proxies for the state in issuing licenses).
It costs a tremendous amount of taxpayer dollars to walk a suit through the process. I hope those opposing gay marriage won't be too surprised if California has to raise their taxes to pay for all that litigation.

While we're on the subject..... I have a friend who works for Fox. He's in a domestic partnership, but with the new marriage law fox is requiring him to get married if he wants to retain partner benefits. Just thought it was funny that now Fox is forcing men into marriage....

John,
This comment is for you specifically, and anyone else in general who may find themselves debating a fundie on this issue: we need to force supporters of the gay-marriage ban to admit that if the people vote against the ban, they will acknowledge and bow to the will of the people. Their mantra has been that it should be the people's choice. Okay, so if the people vote in favor of gay marriage, will they stop their campaign -- or will they work to subvert the will of the people. So, John, if you have the opportunity on cable to debate this issue, do you mind raising this point?
Thanks.

Personally, I believe these types of rights to be part and parcel of our very basic CIVIL RIGHTS that are written up in our bill of rights and constitution, but if put to a vote, I do think that they should be mandated by the Supreme Court and not state by state. But then again, I'm not once who supports the Federalist papers as much as others.
Just as Roe V Wade was voted on as part of our county's civil rights, same sex marriage should be viewed in much the same manner.
OlderAndWiser

I agree with that viewpoint. "Marriage" is universally recognized in this country, even though it's up to states to "license" it, the process. States can deny you a license only because you're not yet divorced, are underage or mentally incapacitated. All of this would apply to gay and lesbian marriages as well.

When straight people have to go back to vote on whether they can get married is when gay people should have to. Not before.
vickif
That's what is happening in Arizona. The people voted in favor of gay marriage a couple of years ago but the bigots are getting it put on the ballot again in November.

OT:
Conservative bankroller and Moonie Times founder and owner Rev. Sun Myung Moon injured in copter crash:
Anyway Moon can be prevented from re-entering the US? Moon has permanent residence status in the US (1973) but remains a SK citizen. In 1984 he started serving time in Danbury prison for felony fraud against the US govt. Newt Gringrich and his gang got the law changed so that Moon and Murdoch (non-citizens) could own media in the US. Tell me that this wasn't an "arranged marriage" between Rethugs and rightwing kooks owning as much media as they want?

Is that the same Newt Gingrich who just wrote in USA Today that he DONATED 2 rhinos to Zoo Atlanta when in reality he was just instrumental in helping the zoo to acquire the rhinos?

Newt's one of those politicians who's a legend in his own mind even if he has to lie to create the myths.

Unfortunately the difference between yes and no is razor thin and within the margin of error. It's basically 50/50 at this point.
We all know that as people understand the nature of these things they get voted down (as id we should be able to vote on anyone's civil rights to begin with). I just hope that the MSM doesn't get this caught in their teeth again and that there are enough people getting married for the State at large to notice it's just not an issue even if you thought it was.
scottinsf

Nine percentage points is hardly razor thin. It is not within the margin of error (+/- 3.9 points) either. The Field Poll has a reputation for being very accurate here in California.

Now we're voting on a civil right? Isn't this a constitutional issue? The politicians should have addressed this issue 20 or 30 years ago and made civil unions legal.
ShirleyGoodnessanMercy

20 or 30 years ago even Liberace was straight.
And civil unions are separate and unequal.
Busboy
Yes, but they provide healthcare and heirship rights and don't piss off 80% of everyone else.
ShirleyGoodnessanMercy
So we should cut back on some of those rights we gave to black folks 'cause their equality ticks off some people? Equal rights for gay citizens doesn't piss of 80% of Americans.
Busboy
"we" didn't give rights to blacks. Blacks already had the same rights as whites under the constitution. It just took an "attitude adjustment" session along with a civil war to make that point.
Grimmlok

I could give a fuck who I piss off to get equal rights. You don't 'compromise' with bigotry; you smash it into the ground and litigate it into oblivion.

In 2005 the California legislature approved gay marriage... but Gov. Schwarzenegger vetoed it.
vickif

Nobody but nobody should get to vote on a civil right. This is so wrong. I live in Illinos and even here there are these nutballs that keep trying to get a similar motion on the ballot. So far they never get the numbers on the petitions and I hope they never do. Everybody is suppose to have the right to LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS not just the so called religious right.

The gays are Muslim terrorists who are enemies of the state, hate America and want to destroy us. Obama is a gay Muslim terrorist. That is why he supports gay marriage. The gay agenda is force us to convert to Islam by the sword and they prefer that we refuse to convert so they can kill and eat us. And they love, love, love, dearly love American children.

Actually if the measure passed, and it caused a HUGE legal mess for CA and possibly MA, if an MA couple moved to CA, or some conundrum, this could force some juicy cases into the SCOTUS. The timing here is perfection. If Obama is elected, he will get to replace at least two justices. What could eventually unfold is what I have been advocating for years: The European Ideal. Your marriage is a civil contract and the marriage ceremony of LEGAL value is done at the Registry office or Town Hall or City Hall. End of process. BUT if you wanna head on over to Saint Dingsboom or Beth Scholomfang or the Mosque, no problemo. BUT your rabbi, minister, priest or immam has NO SIGNATORY POWERS whatever. Sure he can issue a Katuba, or Nuptial Mass thingy or whatever. But his document of the sacrament is worthless. It was the Town Hall office's license that mattered. And that should be the end of all this crap.

What does get taken down mean in the context of “Over 90 percent of propositions that start out behind get taken down.”?
Taken down meaning withdrawn from the ballot or defeated?
