AMERICAblog: Anti-marriage opponents, the ones trying to repeal the Maine marriage law, claim to be "the minority that's being discriminated against"

  • Ninong · 4 months ago
"We feel like the minority that's being discriminated against. We are being treated like pariahs everywhere we go." -- Marc Mutty, public affairs director for the Roman Catholic diocese of Portland.

Maybe it's because your church has a certain well-earned reputation for hypocrisy when it comes to matters of the homosexual persuasion? Maybe it's because people think it is ironic that an institution that is itself at least 40% gay -- at every level -- should be leading the fight against equality for all regardless of sexual orientation?

Maybe it's because the leaders of the Catholic church, from the Vatican on down, have no moral authority when it comes to telling others how they should live their lives?

Whether the "Stand for Marriage" crowd knows or admits it, their whining is a classic example of the propaganda technique known as "inoculation", whereby they accuse their opponents of the very crimes they are committing.

It has the psychological effect of inoculating "Stand for Marriage" against their opponents' recriminations. They know that people are more likely to remember and believe the person who first makes the accusation, regardless of the truth.

The Catholic church has a thousand years of experience in demonizing their opponents. They're good at it.

Fear of your neighbors? Pretty sad. Reminds me of what it's like for way too many GLBT individuals and families. Boo Hoo.

The Catholic Church (and all the others) are correct to this extent, and hooray for it-- They are losing their "right" to stigmatize and persecute other groups without being criticized for it.

Hey, you want to preach against someone? Go ahead. But don't expect the recipients of your bias to keep playing "shamed sinner" to your self-righteousness.

Joe, what's with the comments? Right after "1 of 1 Comments" There's a list of "Reactions", all from Twitter, all of them repeatedly giving another tiny url for the same gayAmericablog story. Then they all repeat themselves! (You're there twice, yourself)
  • AdamBlast · 4 months ago
Yeah, this "Reactions" thing is unhelpful at best; I assume it's being auto-generated to show places that have linked to the original article, but it just seems like an endless circular reference providing only annoyance, looking like comments but with no new content. If it's *needed* for some tech or marketing reason perhaps it could be set up in some way that doesn't masquerade as something more meaningful than it is.

The reactions are below the comments, so why don't you just not read them?
  • Mike_H · 4 months ago
Well, they should be considered pariahs, because they are bigots trying to force THEIR religious belief of marriage on the status of secular civil marriage recognized by the state.

Keep up the good fight, maybe we can win this one!

Start paying taxes and open your books like any other corporation, then we can talk. 'kay?

All of these religionists have about as much understanding of Christianity as my dog. Actually, I think my dog has a more fundamental take on the premise of simply "being" than all of them put together. They all increasingly sound like fools with their denunciation of anything different than their narrow little views.

And don't get me started on the Catholic corporation and that ex(?)-Nazi in charge with the Prada slippers and the lace get ups.

Ol' fart should retire along with the Queen!

So when this anti-gay scum says that "there is some irony here," what exactly does he mean? That he agrees that we are discriminated against, and he agrees that his side does the discriminating, but he's going to keep fighting regardless?

Welcome to our world. The difference is that they really are, as Kathy Griffin says, kid fuckers.
