Somewhere in the recesses of my brain little bells are ringing, wasn't there a gas problem when Bush campaigned either in 2000 or 2004? The reason I think I remember that is because we were joking about prices coming down before the election and then going back up.
  • Dave of the Jungle · 1 year ago
I haven't been this inspired since George W Bush cleared brush back in 2001.

Dumb as We Wanna Be - THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/30/opinion/30fri...

"This is not an energy policy. This is money laundering: we borrow money from China and ship it to Saudi Arabia and take a little cut for ourselves as it goes through our gas tanks. What a way to build our country.

When the summer is over, we will have increased our debt to China, increased our transfer of wealth to Saudi Arabia and increased our contribution to global warming for our kids to inherit."

    Was she wearing her seatbelt?
  • Fireblazes(cheetohsandcatfood) · 1 year ago
How funny, yesterday you were all demanding to see her pump gas. Today you all call her a fake for doing it. When will she quit campaigning for herself and start giving stirring passionate prose expounding on the mighty mighty virtous great O's superior speeches.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
the article says they pumped regular.. Is that right? I would think bigger trucks need premium
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Hillary's quite a woman, she fake fills gas tanks with average citizens, she arranges to co-op legit groups to make robo-calls disenfranchising African American and Independent voters, somehow has a special touch to make surrogates arrange for Press Club interviews of Pastors (because of her love of God no doubt), and single handedly has given a new definition to kitchen sink campaigning.

    just make it stop

    fireblazes

Don't you think it would have been more credible for her to just arrive at a station and talk to real people instead of a guy driving a truck specifically for a photo op? It reminds me of Bush's plastic turkey.
  • slappymagoo · 1 year ago
fireblazes makes an interesting point, which is, some people aren't able to grasp what people are really talking about. Unfortunately, they still have access to computers. It's not that people really want to see Hillary pump gas, but the idea that she doesn't understand what most people's lives are like, people who have to now make sacrifices to afford the gas they need to get where they need to go. And a photo op in a borrowed car with some of her staff and a phalanx of paparazzi ain't gonna fix that either. But thanks for pointing out that you don't get it, it'll make it that much easier for people to ignore you next time. Big Dating Game kiss.

    Feeling better?
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
When is the last time Clinton had to pay out of her own pocket for gas?
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Maybe Hillary could offer up a free half tank of gas to the people of North Carolina. She could even put a cherry on top...
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    Aquarius,

Thanks for noticing. A little, I'm afraid I have some sort of bug. I've had it for about a week now and can't seem to shake it.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Slow Clinton news day, thank god for small favors
  • kevinbgoode · 1 year ago
Hahahahaha. . . .nothin' like the good old politics of deception.
  • Fireblazes(cheetohsandcatfood) · 1 year ago
Good for Hillary! You all should be glad she hasn't done any "real" dirty tricks. What a bunch of political newbies.

  • CitizenX · 1 year ago
As fake as the photo op was, why validate gas guzzling cars to make her crappy point. Would have been "more effective", had the driver had a hybrid, something with a 10 gallon tank that too 40 dollars to fill.
  • Ginger_FL · 1 year ago
Now all she needs is a "Ranch" w/o cows of course, a cowboy hat, a six-shooter and a texas swagger.....then she'd have the Perfect Photo Op....

    Sickening....

Wouldn't it be more effective if the politician actually cared and did something believable to stop the war in Iraq which is responsible in keeping these costs so high?
  • CitizenX · 1 year ago
No doubt... but if you are going to create propaganda and a photo-op, at least try to make it effective. C'mon, a gas guzzling truck? Why not a senior citizen with a prius.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
The Gas Tax Holiday is simply an election time scam to distract from what is actually going on and make the politicians appear as if they are "working hard" on the problem.

What a joke, had any of the supporters actually cared about any of these issues they would have cast far different votes while in Congress.
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
Who has to pay for gas for the Secret Service motorcade, is Hillary paying the Secret Service out of her pocket for gas money for these fake photo ops?
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
This is all about the "Pander Quotient". You know, the one that guides so many politicians to "appear" as if they care for the PEOPLE, while they cast votes against them at most opportunities.

    donotmakemecomedownthere,
The only thing more dispicable than Thomas Friedman is the fact that he continues to suck in air.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
"I don't know what these people are complaining about... $63? I can't even buy a new pair of Jimmy Choos for less than $650! whiners." - fleeting thought passing through her head after hearing it cost $63 for that half tank of regular unleaded.

Whereas I agree with you on the subject of Tom Friedman, I do happen to agree with him on the economic issues he discussed in the article that "dontmakeme" cited.

Here's another issue that might just have something to do with the high cost of gas: ethanol.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/30/ethano...

Ethanol Production Forging Costly Link Between Food And Oil.
Ethanol was once touted (and still is by some) as an effective way to slow global climate change, but that effectiveness is increasingly being questioned as the link between ethanol production and rising food and oil prices becomes clearer.

I'm not a Hillary fan, but I would rather that a bunch of photographers all ride in one SUV than in a lot of other little cars.
  • bkmn · 1 year ago
I'm sure Hillary was just concerned about all those Bosnian snipers that might have tried to take a shot at her while her friend of the minute filled up the tank of his boss's truck...
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
an addendum to the ethanol issue:
While food scientists around the world have said that halting the use of food-based biofuels, such as ethanol, would help combat the global food crisis, Bush has called for increasing the use of ethanol.

Hmmmm....how exciting. Oueen Hitlery mingles with the peasents.
  • Ethrdg · 1 year ago
I'm surprised there aren't some seriously pulled muscles...from all the knee-jerking going on around here.

As if all politicians don't give speeches that are staged in settings appropriate for the topic they're speaking about. Come on!

And Obama has gone so far as to stage being suddenly appalled at the behavior of his longtime preacher in order to further his political career. Where's the outrage there?

(Apparently, he couldn't not conceive of disowning his "nutty uncle..." That is, until the nutty uncle had the audacity to start a full-out press tour right before the North Carolina and Indiana primaries. THEN Obama tosses Uncle Wright under the bus! And I notice that Americablog is suddently offended by Wright's opinions now, too--whereas you guys were defending him left and right before. What changed there--other than Obama's stance?)

And go ahead...vote down this post so as to lower my supposed "clout" rating... Big whoop. We've already learned that anyone who dares say anything that's not quite pro-Obama immediately drops to something like a negative 279 in supposed "clout." What a joke.

("Obama was wearing the wrong color of tie this morning." Negative five. "I have questions about Obama's policy on dealing with Iran." Negative nine. "I have not yet wallpapered my entire house with pictures of Barack Obama." Negative twelve.)

We see it as a badge of honor, really--to be disidentified with a group that is so caught up in the Obama fervor that no other point of view will be tolerated. How lame...and how divisive!
  • firebrand · 1 year ago
Good thing the MSM is so giddy about obsessing the Wright trivia 24/7.

Otherwise they might have to focus on the pathological LIAR.....Hitlery Clinton!
  • firebrand · 1 year ago
Clout rating......yeah that's something to worry about. Eh-hem.
  • Ethrdg · 1 year ago
"I'd love to tell them what I really think of Obama, but then my meaningless CLOUT rating will go down! What on earth will I do? How will I ever get sleep, pacing the floor and worrying about this?"

    *Ahem!*

I didn't say I was worried about it, firebrand. Just making an observation about how Americablog has turned this into a very obvious "us" against "them" sort of community. People who have nothing worthwhile to add to the conversation can satisfy their intolerant selves by giving any "offending" (read: anti-Obama) posts a bad rating. Whoopee. Maybe you're new to this blog and don't realize that it used to be a very united community. I still like the writing here--just not the unobscured bias.

Funny how the focus was on my sarcastic comment about clout--and not on the main topic--Obama's sudden flip-flopping. Did Wright change? Did his views suddenly become too extreme for Obama to handle? Why disassociate himself from Wright now? I thought Wright was as near and dear to Obama's heart as his "white grandmother?" How is this any kind of devotion?

I've been coming here for over three years. BTW....I'm a die hard Obama supporter. Have a nice day. :-)
  • shanobama · 1 year ago
Well, I did not see Obamas grandmother saying that Obama really did not believe his whole political platform, one he has been remarkably consistent on his whole political life. Did I miss something?

If a friend stabbed me in the back like that, and then made a spectacle of himself to get a better book deal, I would disassociate myself from that person.
  • jr · 1 year ago
"These potemkinism made ez videos are the best investment I've ever made"-Hillary
  • Ethrdg · 1 year ago
I wouldn't have associated with someone who would behave like that from the get-go... Yet Obama's been a faithful follower of the man for 20 years. He didn't know the man's character in all those years? Wow. For someone who's insisting that although he's inexperienced, he's got good judgement, he's not shown much of that with the people he chooses to associate with.

Home purchase at a discount, compliments of a Mr. Rezko, anyone? Another example of that great judgement at work.

We're at war, our economy and environment are going down the tubes, gas prices are skyrocketing... Even if we go with the way you guys are painting Hilary, I'd rather have a cold, calculating bitch in charge of our government than a naive idealist who talks a good talk...and only that.
