AMERICAblog: As mayor, Palin wanted to ban books

  • Vince in Cedar Rapids · 1 year ago
No wonder the theocrats like her. With that kind of thinking she fits right in with them.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
does it make me "elitist" to oppose Palin's book banning?

    nope.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Ten bucks says Palin wanted to ban books that treated gay people as normal human beings. Gay-friendly books are ALWAYS the ones the religious freaks want to ban. And Palin's church advocates forcing gays to undergo "treatment" to magically transform into straight people (which of course is proven not to have ever worked for anyone anywhere anytime EVER).

Palin's minister told them that anyone who criticizes Bush is going to Hell, too.

That and of course Harry Potter....you know, "witchcraft and satanism and evil stuff like that there"...

If this trainwreck of a candidate helps Obama/Biden win the election handily, it'll all be worth it.
    The alternative is unthinkable.

You have to admire the Republicans. On Friday everyone was shocked with the choice of Palin. Last night all you heard was how she has fought special interests and lobbyists, she was against earmarks (except for Alaska), she was a maverick. It proved my longstanding theory. Republicans will eat the shit from the bottom of a septic tank , smile and say "More Please" if they think they can continue the gravy train. They whine about big government and spend the country into bankruptcy, they rail against pork barrel spending and include more in supplemental bills that the original spending on the bill. They hire sons, daughters and relatives and claim they are the most qualified. They turn against their own party faithful and install the village idiot as potential VP and they suck this up like shit through a straw. Amazing, amazing, amazing. They can no regard for the country or the American people they think only of themselves hence the "FAMILY VALUES" meme. But it is their families not yours, it is their wealth not yours, and the stupid middle class and poor vote Republican and honestly believe anyone at that convention would even say hello to them on the street.
You do have to admire their consistency and complete disregard for America.
  • Nuffsaid · 1 year ago
Obama opened his convention up to the public so that, at least, eighty-five thousand regular Americans could attend his speach. The Republicans can't even fill their Convention Center. The 10% who think they rule this country can only do so if the rest of us do nothing. Vote...Talk to your friends...And for Americas sake KEEP SPREADING THE WORD. The MSM doesn't want to listen but even they will if it comes from enough voices.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
    here's how it works:

if anyone questions Palin's credentials or experience or position on issues, the Rovian McCain campaign screams: "You're attacking this poor woman's 17 year old daughter and you hate women!!!!!!"

    bullshit bullshit bullshit
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Pat Buchanan tried that last night and Eugene Robinson said "we (journalists) never brought this up, it was the McCain campaign that brought up the 17 year old daughter. Shut Buchanan up pretty quickly.
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
    I like Eugene Robinson.

You know, I'm getting really fuzzy on the difference between the Taliban and the GOP...other than the GOP hasn't started killing people yet.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Good one!!! Sad and scary, but good one!
  • Nuffsaid · 1 year ago
Ain't no difference. Read the Koran to see the laws that both groups want to replace The Constitution with. Under Evangelic law Bristol Palin would have been executed months ago. And her mother would have gladdly welded the knife. Public execution of all non-believers will make the Salem Witch Trials look like a Sunday outing, sorry Sunday outtings also verboten.

    Don't Worry About 'Big Brother"
"Big God" will make him seem like a pansey.

Ever notice that "True Belivers" are perfectly happy to condemn to the Fires of Hell any other "True Beliver" that doesn't spout the exact same drand of drivel that they spout. That basicly leaves the ones of us that are not totally sure totally screwed.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Do You think the Obama campaign is waiting until after the convention to unleash ads concerning Palin. There is so much tying her and McCain to Bush/Cheney. Abuse of power, bold faced lies, earmarks, economics, the war.

So when does the push back begin?
  • Sugapea · 1 year ago
Imagine all this coming down AFTER her Conformation.
Just like Bush choosing his private secretary for USSC.
It makes it clear...McCain and the GOP can't govern!
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
I honestly think it will all start next week. Any attacks this week have seem mild and more just responses to questions. Next week though, I'm hoping the gloves come off. Game is on...

for once the media is doing it's job ...

this stuff is being printed in newspapers and even talked about evening news shows. obama should ignore her and focus on mccain. people ultimately vote for the top of the ticket.

A nice book bonfire is a great way to stay warm on those cold Alaskan nights.... Fahrenheit 451 = toasty!
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
These crazy ass sex cravin' conflicted fundie Pentacostals never cease amazing me.

I hear a video exists of a bee-hived hairdo strychnine guzzlin' baby oiled lathered Palin in trance dance with rattlesnakes wearing nothing but a bullet belt draped around her all while babbling in tongues.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Oh how I wish...though at the rate things are coming out, nothing would surprise me at this point! ha.
  • HarpoSnarx · 1 year ago
    or sexist?
  • Gridlock · 1 year ago
Maybe we should get her fitted out for some lovely leather riding boots, black jacket and armband and take her on a tour of Nuremberg. She'd fit right in... 60 years ago.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
I was thinking more on how she would have fit right in with the Salem witch hunters.

Latest scandal, firing of the police chief:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/03/police...
  • larz · 1 year ago
I had read that she actually fired the librarian and then was forced to reinstate her after huge protests. The same interview indicated that while mayor, Palin used fired anyone that questioned her and hired her friends and family to fill positions. It was widely known that you did not cross her because she use her mayoral powers for personal vendettas. So much for being a "reformer" - I'm calling her "Mini-McCain".
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
"After taking over as Mayor of the small town of Wasilla, Palin fired the longtime local police chief. The former police chief, Irl Stambaugh says he was fired because he stepped on the toes of Palin's campaign contributors, including bar owners and the National Rifle Association.

Stambaugh's lawyer, William Jermain, says the chief tried to move up the closing hours of local bars from 5 a.m. to two a.m. after a spurt of drunk driving accidents and arrests.

"His crackdown on that practice by the bars was not appreciated by her and that was one reason she terminated Irl," said Jermain.

Ah it just gets better and better and better....

More Palin more of the time. another McCain fiasco. McSame will, if ever elected or selected, be even worse than Bush. Count on it. He shows all of the traits in spades.
  • alaskan · 1 year ago
Now we know what Sarah can do as VP so that she stays really "productive." She can ban books at the Library of Congress.
  • Nuffsaid · 1 year ago
It's all part of the "Palin Energy Plan"
    1> Burn Books in stragicly placed bonfires,{outside most libraries}
2>Rebuild the US whaling fleets to their pre 19th century levels.
3> Give everyone in America a bearskin rug.
    4> Pray for Global Warming
5>Reduce the population through nuclear war so there will be enough oil for everybody
6>Hope for The Rapture so only the sinners will have to suffer.

I have a question for the right wing Evangelicals so thrilled with the anti abortion, abstinence only candidate Palin. Why does she Only have 5 kids? At her age and given her beliefs she should have at least a dozen or so.

For that matter how about the Evangelical families? Shouldn't they be sporting huge families? Do they seriously think that we believe they are ALL practicing abstinence only, because other than birth control pills there are very few ways to ensure a small family.
  • barts · 1 year ago
This thing is turning into one huge fiasco. I would not have been surprised if McBlame retracted his nominee for VP because of all the baggage. Unfortunately she is set to give her acceptance speech tonight and there's no turning back. Except for the religious base I don't know of anyone dem or rep who is happy about McBlame's choice.

And isn't it what this whole thing is all about? Abortion and gay marriage? The republicans haven't changed their tune except be more radical in face of a failed presidency, dwindling economic situation, record job loss, etc.

I can't stomach to watch the incessant republican pageant parade of flag waving and praying and 'they hate us for our freedom' attitude at this spectacle of the RNC. In the bits and pieces of watching the RNC I am hard pressed to find a person of color anywhere.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
barts: I was able to count at least 6 in the crowd during the 2nd. night.
  • barts · 1 year ago
I watched a mother-daughter team interview on CNN this morning. The two were from OH and previous Hillary supporters. The mother exemplified the typical uneducated white trash who is now supporting McBlame but cannot form simple sentences during the interview, let alone explain why. The daughter, thankfully more articulate and bright said she in now for Barack because the rep party is staunchly anti-choice.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
Any attack on Palin will be met with a cry of sexism...However, the Republicans are sexist to believe women are dumb enough to vote for a woman just because she is a woman.
She is NOT immune to scrutiny just because she is female. THAT IS SEXIST.
Again, the Republicans don't get it.
  • barts · 1 year ago
It seems the argument from the Right is that it should be up to the parents and not the schools to teach sex ed. But I personally know of 2 very conservative families who refused to even mention anything about sex at home as well so how are the kids supposed to learn about sex. By the way the daughters in BOTH families have been knocked up before age 17.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
barts: I hope you are aware that Sarah Palin was pregnant BEFORE SHE got married. So this seems to be the family values going back at least two generations. Yet, abstinence only is their failed mantra.
  • djhwood · 1 year ago
Hmmm.....She came in and wanted to reckelssly ban books in a library because of offending language, her 17-year old unmarried daughter gets pregnant, she claims to be holier than thou....what's next ?....Kevin Bacon riding into town in a VW bug looking to start a dance?

David Ploffe?, from the Obama campaign just seemed off key just now with Nora O'Donnell. She asked him about the executive experience and he never answered the question, he side stepped it. They are going to have to do better than that to reduce this "executive" experience fiasco. Hell the GOP has people believing Palin is MORE qualified than McCain, Obama and Biden.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
DANGEROUS IS AS DANGEROUS DOES: Both McCain and Palin are dangerous given any power to carry out their extreme inclinations. Beware the return of Cheney, Rummy, Bush, Wolfie, Gonzo, Pearl,Miers,Mattalin,Libby, Feith,Goodling, and, of course, Heck of a Job Brownie. More of the same with McCain. Ban the Books and Ban the Bombs? The Voters' Choice

We're beginning to see a pattern of Paylin wanting to "fire" anyone who she thinks doesn't play on her theocratic team. This gives beauty contests a bad name!!

I think someone should follow up on what books Palin wanted banned. Evolution and left leaning political books I imagine? I think a public official trying to ban the Wasilla community from certain types of information would be damning story. Can you say Authoritarian!

I attempted to donate a copy of Iraq for Sale the War Profiteers at the Wasilla Library shortly after it was released. At first my donation was refused and a librarian told me they would put it in the for sale area for donations to help fund the library. After I made an impassioned plea that the film was a current socially revelant and mentioned on all the major new networks, the librarian told me she would press further into getting it into circulation. A week later she told me it would be in circulation. I just checked and it still is in circulation!

I wonder who makes up the library board and their political affiliations? The librarian was very nice and helpful and even sent me an invitation to join the library board, but it did seem like she was up against some resistance...

Small town politics in a conservative town.
