    cheney also ruthlessly slashed procurement,
    he cancelled the Navy A-10 Attack bomber then when the
    navy bucked him, he cancelled the A-6 aircraft right
    off the carriers, he actually had them fly the airplanes
    still in service to scrap fields where he had the wings
    carved off with torches.

    Why? To show the Navy who was boss.

    Pat, it was the A-12. I worked that program. By his misunderstanding of how procurement works and what authority he didn't have, he provided GD/McAir excellent grounds for suing the US. We lost, IIRC. Probably still in the courts.

    In the locality, it was believed that the USAF did a better job of lying when the USN told the truth.

    well it was a mess.

    Cheney wanted to cancel the A-12 in part because it was overweight, behind schedule and over budget plus the Lockheed people were not sharing any stealth technology with McAir.

    I don't know who was right, certainly the program was in deep trouble, and Cheney ordered it cancelled, the Navy Admiral refused to send the Stop Work Order so Cheney did it, which
    was illegal in he wasn't the "Agent of Record".

    McAir sued, got a billion and change, then got locked out
    of every other DoD gig. The Navy fought cheney and he
    wrecked the careers of every Attack pilot in the navy.


    So it was a disaster all the way around.

    its funny... I've known this was true for YEARS... cheney was behind cancelling the M1 tank, the B-2 stealth bomber, tried to kill the Osprey... etc. pretty much gutted the military.

    stuff like that I remember...

    but I didn't find out that Johnny Marr has been playing with Modest Mouse since 2006 until today!

    sometimes I seem to be living in a vacuum. ugh.

    I remember Bill Clinton was blamed for those cuts.

    Somewhere yesterday I read that George W. didn't criticize Clinton after his election, made me wonder if anyone has a memory at all.

    I think it's unlikely Americans will soon forget that, when Bush and Cheney sent soldiers to Iraq, their families had to take up collections to equip them with body armor. Neo-cons pursue this comparison at their own risk.
