Australia . . . the last refuge of angry white Americans.

Well afterall, possums, it WAS a penal colony...
This will be about controlling internet political blogging, not porn. Porn is that great smokescreen for the ignorant white trash religious fundies so that the government can get a handle on EXACTLY what happened on November 4th in the USA. The old white farts like McSame are finally beginning to even ask questions like "what exactly is the internet?" They have now seen that it must be controlled. How? Make sure the people hear the stories about junior high kids lured by pervs into mall meetings...throw in a few Jeffrey Dahmer freezers and voila you've got control. Just wait. It will happen here, too.

While I am against censorship, I draw the line on child pornography. What is particularly objectionable to this plan is that there are no legal challenges, it's simply by govt fiat--and sadly, too many people think their govts have the people's interests at heart. : (
If people want to ruin their lives through criminal activity, that's their problem, just don't involve children. I would apply that to religious nuts as well...who think they're above the law just by invoking "gawd."

I totally agree Older about child pornography. Totally. But at the same time, it is used as the excuse for controlling ALL internet sites. I think we are in the very infancy of the internet in terms of leveling the playing field of power. It will hold the government accountable in a way that no one can even dream of right now. Chimpy would NEVER have stood a chance had he been elected, or selected, after 2000. The old farts running Australia at least see that they must get a handle on it now. I am no IT expert but I think they can find work-arounds. Not sure yet exactly if a government can totally control it. Wireless to offshore blogs? Not sure. I am waiting for Washington to start traipsing out the child threat card to begin reining the net in.

The article stated that most child porn comes from "black" sites which are not public and go thru a number of servers to hide their origination, and cater specifically to those interested, but I'm not sure I buy that. I suspect that these purveyors of child abuse want as much money as they can get, in addition to indulging their sick preferences and it's probably more available than is known at the present. There have been a few busts in this area of NC of people with servers who were passing this crap on out of their homes.
And yes, this is what will be promo'd by govt...when parents could be filtering most of that crap if they just were more observant, along with the sites that young teens, esp. frequent. Wouldn't policing one's own site be preferable to having govt do it? I'm thinking of social sites where underaged kids are lured by adults, for instance.
Kids are curious and sociable for the most part--the internet plays that. I remember when my sons could only get copies of the benign Playboy when other kids stole their dad's copy...now kids have access to all sorts of stuff. Even my grandson, who is now 18, wasn't permitted by me to go to any sites on my own computer that didn't cater to "older teens" even at 17. He's level headed, discerning, and has a MySpace page and confines it to friends, but he's a real game geek--his passion. : )

Ah, yes, the Great American Dirty Little Secret...parents are clueless about how to parent their kids. Or lazy or just plain stupid...or all of the above. Bill Cosby got SLAMMED a few years ago when he began to address this. I teach IT to middle school kids. Part of our curriculum is addressing issues of good net use vs bad net use. They giggle and titter about how fun it is to show themselves nude or having sex online. They dismiss me when I begin talking about the Jeffrey Dahmers out there who are posing in chat rooms as 13 year old girls, trying to lure 14 year old boys into a "meeting". We've had Dallas police detectives, who specialize in netiquette and child porn, come to talk to them. They thinks it's a lark. And when you offer up such a session to PARENTS, well the ones who come are usually the ones who already have a good firewall at home and monitor their kids 24/7. The ones who don't attend are the very ones who need to. Plus ca change, etc. I go into the story of the Harvard applicant who showed his dick on his MySpace and then got rejected. They don't seem to think that if they put up a picture or vid clip that it will float around out there ad infinitum. They think it's all fun, innocent, and silly old me telling them horror stories. In fact some of them are secretly making money online baring their naughty bits. A few have tattled on each other in this respect to me, as they do trust me to handle it as a professional. The moms of the kids who've done this blame everyone BUT themselves: the internet, the school for not teaching the kids about it, everyone is to blame BUT me the mommy. "Oh I don't have time to learn how to use a computer...I mean I have my tennis lessons, and my spa time, and my hairstylist, and my gym time, and on and on and on."
And then I get called on the carpet for being to graphic with them with possible scenarios if they hook up with some pervert who will wind up with their body parts in a freezer in some garage in South Dallas...nope...censor the internet to protect our kids. THE FUCKING PARENTS DON'T!!!!!

Isn't child porn a crime? The world internet should block all criminal sites such as child porn sites, not just Australia.
The list of blocked sites should be made public and persecuted by all police authorities until caught, prosecuted and sentenced.

Do you not get it? If you are opposed to Internet controls, you are for child porn. That is how it is to be sold. Do you really think they will stop at kiddie porn?

The problem is that they will block liberal, progressive sites labeling them child porn since there is no listing of which sites are blocked or any review of which sites are blocked. When liberals or Democrats protest, they will be labeled as pornographers and criminals. But then I would like to see a printout of the sites visited by Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Rove. In fact, my guess is that McCain is not internet illiterate, he knows his way around the sites he likes to visit.
It's the true purpose of censorship. Censor your enemies and label them criminals, when, as usual, the real pornographers, the real criminals are Republicans.

"to make Australia one of the strictest Internet regulators among democratic countries." WHAT PART OF "democratic" DID I MISS ?
Censorship is not Democracy !!!!

Oh, be sure this is already in the US in some form. To get federal $$ for internet technology and service, public libraries are required to have filters on their internet. Not necessarily child porn this time, but more keeping children from porn is the story.
At the library. The supposed last bastion of intellectual freedom and non-censorship.
If only libraries had all the funds they needed so they wouldn't have to be dependent on the fed $$ (and thus beholden to the fed's rules).

"Those willing to give up freedom for security deserve neither." - Benjamin Frankling (and that quote is for any Americans who think the Maginot Line is a "good idea" especially those supposed idiotic Republican Talibangelical Fascist Fools who will hand over anything Fox News tells them to.

Funny thing about 'Maginot Lines'...somebody will always just run around their ends. France found that out to their detriment in WWII. Fixed fortifications, whether in the Realworld or the Wired are only marginally effective at best, and at worst will be a huge money sink that provides only false security. Cowboyneok's quoting Franklin seems apt for this--the fools who decided to vote away their right to decide how to live their lives deserve neither security nor freedom.....
Where is any attempt to identify this Canberra government as what it is? Please recall this is the same left of center Australian government that Chris Crain just praised on his website last week. Still, Chris in Paris would want you to think its still right wing John Howard's government, not Labour.

English and American Govs are watching this with great interest. First kiddie porn, then holocaust researchers, then regular porn, then 911 truth sites, then torrent portals, then "dissent" that "incites people",....... until finally the internet is no more than a home shopping portal, and everyone can go back to sleep.
