AMERICAblog: Australian firefighter saves baby koala (video)

That's amazing! (Unless the koalas are planning an invasion...)

And it gets even cuter - the koala made a friend at the wildlife shelter:

The AP story says millions of animals may not have survived the fires. It is heartbreaking, talking about kangaroos feet being burned, animals with scorched lungs, even a turtle, fused like melted plastic, and wombats who've gone back into tunnels who will probably starve to death when they come out. Horrible stuff. Animal and wildlife groups are doing all they can.

And of course, there's the human toll which is awful in and of itself.

I happened to be in Oakland Ca when that huge fire scorched the hillsides............I can remember running for my life to my car, and as we escaped, we could see deer, raccoons, even coyotes running with this look on all their faces.............I'll never forget it.............some emotions are Universal

Hmm, Koalas were ugly animals would you be on this jeremiad?
  • cowboyneok · 10 months ago
Some animals are more lovable than others. I doubt very seriously anyone would be trying to bottle feed some scary species like a great white shark...
  • Mary · 10 months ago
You probably won't find many great white sharks surviving that inferno!

I probably wouldn't do this for rats or cockroaches - and I'm divided as to whether I'd help poodles, but that's for another day. :-) Dear Lord, some people just have to find the cloud behind the silver lining don't they.

Thanks, John, for giving us something else to think about. My family donated yesterday - we appreciate you making it easy to do so.
  • cowboyneok · 10 months ago
Well, that brought tears to my eyes. Especially the part where the baby reached out his hand for comfort...

Thanks for posting that link, John. I made sure I mentioned that I saw the donation site listed on americablog.

For any Facebook members out there, the Australian Koala Foundation has a Facebook page also where you can make a donation.

Nice of you to post links about koala-related charities and such.

Ever thought about any of the other species affected by the fires? Or, perhaps, the humans? Maybe they could use some shout-outs as well.
  • John Aravosis · 10 months ago
You can't help everybody and every cause every second of the day. And this isn't MammalBlog, we're not going to spend the entire day listing species in danger :-) This is a particularly sad and touching story, one that may move people to act more than other stories, so we're writing about it. You're free to give money to any human charity you wish, any day, even without my prodding :-)
