AMERICAblog: Bill Clinton now supports marriage equality

"Fully on our side"? Yeah, not so much. This is a tepid endorsement of marriage rights at best. "I'm basically in support"? Please.
When he says "DOMA was wrong and must be repealed", and starts applying real pressure to Obama and congress to make it happen, I'll applaud him. Til then he's still the sonofabitch who sold us down the river.

thanks - i found it to be rather tepid, too. look at the actual quotes - looks like he can't even bring himself to say the word marriage! "I think it's wrong for someone to stop someone else from doing that [same-sex marriage]." -how half-assed!
the same big deal was made of Cheney saying something similar a few weeks back - again, never saying the word marriage, and even the question, in that case, was "marriage or something like it" - actual support isn't a half-assed answer to a question.
at least Senator Dodd had the decency to say he was wrong, and now he supports full marriage rights.

He's a weasel. Always was, always will be. There's no stand he has the guts to take just because it's the right thing to do. You're right: the shift we saw from people like Dodd, Schumer, Dean and even Kerry were far more meaningful and genuine. Hell, Megan McCain said it 100 times better than this.
Is this the gay ghetto? Why is there a separate gay section?

Its the "back of the blog."

They added this as a separate blog because they were so many gay stories they wanted to post, but there wasn't room on the main page. This story is still being covered on the main blog.
With Bill's "not a federal issue" he reduces his support for same-sex marriage to a make-believe wedding, an exchange of rings, and a reception. This is the very last, rock-bottom last, aspect of marriage I'm interested in. I want federal guarantees that anywhere I live my partner and I will be considered legally next of kin.
It's very simple, really, just three words. Next of Kin.

Gee, perhaps in another 10 years Obama will come out in favor of same-sex marriage, too.

Too bad Bill's not the President any longer.

Well, I would not hold your breath for WJC to lead the charge. He's generally full of shit, and I think I hear Chelsea whispering in his ear on this one.

This is good news. I just hope he puts some effort into this movement.

I think Clinton went for DOMA to keep a federal anti-gay marriage amendment off the table, while allowing time to pass, for the American people to evolve a little. Which they have, to a degree. I think most Americans support equal benefits of marriage for gay and straight alike, even if they aren't all on board with the word, "marriage" to describe a gay couple's commitment. They will evolve there, as well, though, within a few years.

Big fucking deal, thanks Bill! Now that he's out of office and is powerless to do anything, he says he supports us. Fuck off you POS. With friends like him one doesn't need enemies. Most of what happens in government these days is a joke. Obama campaigned HARD for gay equality and for repealing DOMA and DADT, but since he was elected he has done squat, just like Clinton. They can all kiss my ass, not a one of them has courage to fight for what is right. And that goes for every Congressman and Senator who refuse to treat us as equals, which is a direct attack against our Constitution--a document that doesn't mean shit.

Clinton’s remarks are next to worthless and typical of an unreconstructed Dixiecrat. He injected states rights into the discussion. So did George Wallace and Strom Thurmond. Promoting homohating is a crime. The furious anti-GLBT sentiment whipped up by the opposition of the Clintons, Obama and the Bushes to same sex marriage combined with and Clinton’s total and direct responsibility for the evils of DADT aren't going away. He not only championed DOMA he boasted about signing it on rightwing christer radio stations like those owned by Pat Robertson.
To make up for all the union votes he lost promoting pro-big business, anti-unions laws like NAFTA Clinton put out the following campaign ad in 1996 to get reelected:
“Protecting Religious Freedom. It's the foundation of our nation.
President Clinton wants a complete ban on late term abortions… The President signed the Defense of Marriage Act… President Clinton has fought for our values and America is better for it. “
BTW, a constitutional DOMA didn’t appear until several years later. It’s absurd to pretend that somehow Clinton was helping us out by signing the most bigoted law in US history.
Bill Clinton’s rampant bigotry isn’t excused in the least just because he’s trying to out-maneuver another hustler, Obama, to promote some delusional 2012 comeback dreams of a third right wing christer bigot, Hillary Clinton. That explains what he’s doing now but nothing excuses what he did earlier.

In fact, as President, Clinton did far more for the glbt community than Obama has done to date: http://clinton2.nara.gov/WH/Accomplishments/ac3...
