AMERICAblog: Black conservatives conflicted on Obama campaign

  • Indigo · 1 year ago
It helps Obama that McCain's so-called "conservatism" has no wheels.
  • sherifffruitfly · 1 year ago
Chalk up 4 more votes for Obama.
  • lark83 · 1 year ago
Seriously, how many votes does this get for Obama. Kerry won the black vote 88-11%. Lets say Obama wins 95% of the black vote. How many votes does that get him? Does it win him any battle ground states?

Bravo to Norway for just approving gay marriage. Sweden is expected to follow very soon, as are Denmark and Iceland. That gives us Canada, Holland, Spain, Belgium, South Africa, Norway, Massachusetts, and on Tuesday California!
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
    Brazil and Argentina.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Brazil and Argentina don't have full gay marriage rights for gay spouses. Argentina has civil unions, as does most of Europe and some states, like VT, CT, and NJ. In Brazil I think only Sao Paolo has gay marriage, as does Mexico City and Mexico's Chihuahua state.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
Thanks for bringing me up to date. You know, at first we only wanted just civil unions and the bigots fought us bitterly for just that, nothing will satisfy me until we all have full gay rights which includes marriage and calling it that.

ouch. McGrandpappy'll be none too pleased about this poll...
more people associate him with the word 'old' than 'maverick'...

It amazes me how any African American can call themselves "conservative" or vote GOP.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
Anybody who's black or gay and votes republican has mental problems.

My little cheap rice cooker ($15) works really great. I'm making some more now and it's just as tastey and same texture as you get in a Chinese restaurant, which is what I wanted. And I love it because you just measure it out with the right amount of water and not worry about it. I've overcooked or burned rice in the past.
  • lark83 · 1 year ago
What kind is it? Will any $15 rice cooker do the trick? Does it make only white rice?
  • RenoAnne · 1 year ago
Is there any estimate as to how large the self-loathing African American electorate actually is?
  • mirth · 1 year ago
Alan Keyes, Armstrong Williams, J.C. Watts, maybe a couple of others.
    That's about it.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
Clarence Thomas is in there too. And it's not always the same pathology. Watts and Armstrong are opportunists, Keyes is a lunatic and Thomas is angry.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
Oh yeah, I forgot ol' Clarence.

Perfect descriptions of what motivates them.

I've bookmarked that in my 'no shit' file. And I think it's anti-gay bigotry that Sullivan is the only republican in the US who's had to apologize for supporting the Iraq war.

    huh?

    Traditional Chinese: 大白菜
    Simplified Chinese: 大白菜

Anyways, trying to check out some Chinese recipes. I picked up some napa cabbage. Never heard of it before. Was looking for Bok Choy but they didn't have any. It has sort of a water chestnuts taste and texture when steamed.

This doesn't suprise me. Obama has the ability to reach across the aisle. These black republicans are aware they've sat on the sidelines in the GOP. Obama has done something they've only dreamed about happening all of their lives. This is making them take a second look at their own brand of politics.

You're correct, the right has always tried to pretend they're interested in social issues, and I can gurantee you this--the right will never field a black candidate. Colin Powell is already seeing the light. He was used by Bush and his cronies.

Check out Whitley Strieber's interview. Click "Dreamland" top right to listen:

    David Ray Griffin

    June 14, 2008

This week, we present a searing interview of David Ray Griffin. Whitley Strieber asks the hard questions, and gets the devastating answers about what really happened on 9/11. Much of this material is new and it is deeply shocking. Then Linda Howe talks about what is probably the most incredible crop circle ever created, the first of what promises to be a stunner of a season in southern England.

    ??? Rice

Well I would like to be a fly on the wall when Condi Rice votes. She may publicly claim fealty to McCain - but I'd bet she'll secretly vote for Obama.
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
No, Rice will and has written in Adolph Hitler since she was able to vote.

I wonder what Deroy Murdock's views are? He's an extremely conservative Black gay conservative who in the past has railed against gay liberal elitists and their demands for special rights. This guy is one of the worst of the quislings.
  • BuddyNovinski · 1 year ago
I agree. He once wrote a moronic column that Matthew Shepard should have had a gun to use on Aaron McKinney. He had several facts wrong. There was no third assailant. Matt had no time to pull a gun, even if he'd had one. Furthermore, one should be trained when to use a gun in self-defence, in other words to use deadly force only as a last resort. Of course, my rebuttal only ended up in the local paper.

Sadly, I'm no more able to understand black conservatives than Log Cabin Republicans at this point. Certainly not after the callous, murderous nature of the response to Katrina, and the attacks on Obama.

What part of the conservative philosophy appeals at this point to groups (like African-Americans) that are openly demonized by the GOP at every turn? The massive deficit? The bloated government spending? The open demonizing of the first credible black candidate? The inept handling of two wars being fought in great part by minority soldiers and marines?

I firmly believe that Colin Powell will pull the level for Barack. Rice may as well, though I'm less certain. I think it would be very easy to talk yourself into this particular Democrat, who speaks so eloquently and with optimism about solving the challenges we face, and represents such hope for everybody, even if you are moderately conservative. It wouldn't surprise me to see a lot of people stay at home or cast their first vote for a Democrat ever.
  • Bubbles · 1 year ago
If I had a dollar from every black conservative, I'd be, uhm, right where I am right now. Poor, broke, and in debt up to my annoids .
  • BuddyNovinski · 1 year ago
John, liberal Republican is an oxymoron. Liberal Republicans left the party with the New Deal. I think you mean moderate Republicans, who are an endangered species! One should reject the framework the reactionaries shaped when the god Ronald Reagan became king.
