Good question. I think there are a number of people from around here who have moved to Alaska, so there may be some influence there in the accents.
I looked at her genealogy and she does have some roots in Minnesota and Wisconsin, but it's way back with her great grandparents. But maybe the accent just sticks around for a while.

It is amazing how this works. Teenagers often think their parents are SO slow/stupid/out-of-it, etc. Then, when they get out on their own, oftentimes in their 20s, their parents get so much smarter!
