Thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul Judy Shepard. You are truely a lesson in humanity.

Thank you Judy and Denis. This law is a great tribute to your slain son Matthew, and the love you hold for him in your hearts. At long last the Republican hate machine has failed.

anyone know why Feingold voted no?
  • carefullywatching · 2 months ago
I believe he voted no because of the military bill this was attached to, not because of the hate crimes aspect of the bill. He has been supportive of gay rights.

There were several reasons to vote against it, not least of which is the fact that the bill provides for the death penalty which I am morally opposed to due to the potential that exists that an innocent person might be executed, no matter how unlikely. As such I would have voted 'No' as well.

I guess those 29 a-holes who voted against it tend to forget that their fundamentalist religious base has been protected by existing hate crimes legislation all along. I don't know how some of these a-holes get elected in the first place.

And this is just the beginning.

I wonder how long it'll take the first troll to get on here and mealy-mouth about why we don't need hate crimes legislation. Bets?

More special rights for the “favorite status groups” that democrats love. More law suits for useless civil rights attorneys so they can pick the pockets of those that produce and work for a living. More new laws that we do not need.

oh please. those who whine about lgbts being added conveniently never say a word about the already existing religious category of hate crimes legislation.
  • lbj · 2 months ago
Not whining. We do not need those laws either, professor.

LBJ: My guess is you are a Caucasian, Christian male who has yet never experienced any sort of violent hate towards you.

Maybe if someone beats your ass to near death just for being a Republican, you'll understand the purpose of this Hate Crimes law and start whining for political party affilation to be included so that you might also get the support of the DOJ.

This truly is an historic day for the LGBT Community. I am grateful to Judy and Dennis Shepard who never gave up pushing for this legislation. This day lets helps us all remember those who have been victims of hate crimes and those that lost their lives due to people who want to perpetrate hate and intolerance. Isn't it time for all of us to just stop and say, "it takes so much energy to perpetrate hate and violence." Could we use that energy to express love and acceptance for all people, even those we do not agree with or understand. Just think about it.
