AMERICAblog: Breaking: Minnesota Supreme Court rules in favor of Al Franken

  • jim morrissey · 5 months ago
who cares? honestly if the dems could get anything done now that they're "in power" i'd be happy about this, but so far they have shown that they are just preparing the way to let the republicans back in next year. they don't want to be in power, they are so scared of offending people that i truly believe bill maher is right - dems are right of center. they're the new republicans.

Let me be the first to say: Coleman concedes, congratulates Franken!

  • markf217 · 5 months ago
Maybe Tim Pawlenty will admit he had an affair or something... anything to avoid signing that certificate.
  • dcinsider · 5 months ago
It will be fascinating to see how Pawlenty squirms out of his commitment to sign the elction certificate that he made this week.
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
If he doesn't sign, won't really make too much difference if he tries to stand in the way. Franken can go around him if there is an appearance that he is obstructing in any way. Pawlenty may run for president and having this black mark on his record might not look so good that this governor would rather play republican politics than let the country run on its checks and balances and place an elected senator in office. What type of president would he appear to be if he only is there to play politics? (Bush is the correct answer . . . second answer is Obama.)

    Norm Coleman = certified loser
  • meileen · 5 months ago
This is great news! We now have that pinnacle of success rate - a 60 majority in the senate. This MUST mean that DADT and DOMA will be repealed and equality for all will prevail this very year. Right?

    <<crickets>>
  • nicho · 5 months ago
No, Rick "It's only a two minute prayer" Warren would be upset.
  • ndtovent · 5 months ago
I thought this would make 59, not counting leiberman or arlen spector. So who is the 60th?
  • yawn · 5 months ago
al franken is 60, specter is 59, including lieberman and bernie.
  • JustAGuy · 5 months ago
... and in the distance, a dog barked.

  • kugelschreiber · 5 months ago
If you give a damn about things like the environment, war, health care and the economy, you might want to look at the glass as 60% full.
  • jpjones · 5 months ago
I DO give a damn about those issues, which is why I've criticized Obama for appointing Timothy Goldman-Sachs Geithner to Treasury and for refusing to take a firm stand on a public option on health care. I also give a damn about transparency in government and I want to know why Obama is keeping the White House visitors log a secret a la George Bush. I give a damn about human rights and I want to know why this government still holds prisoners who've not been charged with crimes indefinitely and why Obama is protecting war criminals from prosecution.

But my question for you is, do you give a damn about civil rights and equality for all Americans?
  • kugelschreiber · 5 months ago
Of course I do. As a gay American I expect civil rights and equality, a clean environment, access to good health care and a robust economy.
  • jpjones · 5 months ago
We're on the same side. I'm just running out of patience with the assertion, sometimes implied and sometimes overtly stated, that those of us pressing the Dems on DADT and DOMA are single-issue obsessives. Maybe that's not what you meant at all - I admit, it wouldn't be the first time I've jumped on someone because I misinterpreted them. Like so many others, my emotions are pretty raw, having worked for and contributed to the election of people who talk a good game, but then ignore the very issues they promised to address. And as you point out, those issues are many.
  • meileen · 5 months ago
    Hmmm. Writing/righting the apologies already?
  • kugelschreiber · 5 months ago
Apologies for whom? Franken? Last time I checked, this was a thread about him. His election is a *good* thing.
  • AR_HillBilly · 5 months ago
I agree that it would be nice to be optimistic enough to see the "glass" as 60% full. But to believe that the Dems will now have 60 votes for all of these issues is, unfortunately, unrealistic. We have already seen Dems cross the aisle on the environment and health care.

But here is why DADT and DoMA should be top priorities:

War - with 2 servicemen being discharged per day, most with vital linguist and strategist skills, the chance of actually winning these wars grows smaller every single day this continues.

Health Care Reform - even if the Dems do happen to force some sort of reform through Congress, thanks to DoMA those reforms will not be applied to the partners or families of same-sex couples. So why should we support it, in any form??

Economy - many of the reforms in the works that not specifically targeting corporations, are geared toward working families... but not OUR working families, thanks to DoMA. So once again, why should we support any economic package??

Anyone who thinks that our fight for equality is only about marriage, really needs to get a clue!
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
I fear there will be more hand wringing and complaints that if we only had a larger majority, we could get things done or some such blather. Remember, Reid is still in charge so you know where that will get us.
  • terrya · 5 months ago
So, when Norm doesn't get the verdict he wants in federal court, what will he do next...go to the United Nations? Intergalatic court?

There comes a point when Coleman looks like a fool. What am I saying, he passed that point a long time ago.

    Congratulations to Senator Al Franken!
  • mwdavis · 5 months ago
Divine intervention, it's Coleman's only hope.
  • jpjones · 5 months ago
Not much evidence of God's love for the GOP lately. Maybe if they started obeying His Commandments...
  • Indigo · 5 months ago
Or a speeding car. Franklin should be careful, very careful.
  • nicho · 5 months ago
Or a small plane -- stay out of small planes, Al.
  • nikto · 5 months ago
    Yes, it's true.

    Small planes carrying Democrats
    tend to crash in Minnesota.
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
Ha! "Divine intervention", can be a double-edged sword, if you believe in that sort of nonsense. ;-)
  • tigergrrldc · 5 months ago
There comes a point when Coleman looks like a fool.

LOLOLOL! That happened a long time ago.
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
I haven't seen any change in Coleman since he was in office so he may have been a fool all along.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 5 months ago
Oh how I wish Coleman would push this to the SCOTUS and they rule in favor of Coleman, to repeat the coup of 2000. Maybe then we could begin a real revolution in the streets of Washington DC and show BOTH parties how fed up we are.
  • ndtovent · 5 months ago
"paving the way for a resolution in the seven-month fight over the seat...." Just f*****g SEAT him already! Why can't he just be seated while the fight goes on. coleman could still appeal to the fed courts while Franken is in the senate. Enough is enough.
  • judybrowni · 5 months ago
Is this truly our last chance to kick Norm Coleman around?

Even if so (and I'm not banking on Pawlenty) you still have the option to donate a Dollar a Day to Make Norm Coleman Go Away.

Donations (over $183,00, so far!) go to the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which helps progressive candidates run effective campaigns and win.

Paging Harry Reid... Paging Harry Reid... It's time for you to say "something."

    Hello? Hello?

    Bueller?

    Breaking: Bill O'Reilly's mind.
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
Elvis, I mean, Harry Reid has left the building . . .
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
Unfortunately, it's not over yet. Coleman can appeal to the Federal Court system and take it all the way to the Supreme Court if he's that much of a low-life. That isn't beneath him one bit and nothing, not a word, has come from his camp. This bastard is a real pain in the tush and is obstructing a person from performing his duties as senator in a state republican coup to try and unseat a person elected fairly the winner. The republican party and Coleman, their puppet, have proven time and time again that they do not care what the will of the people is and will continue to interfere seating a democratic senator. There must be some way to sue the pants off of him and fine the republicans responsible for this game they are playing. Franken should have been seated back in January. This is way over the line if they continue to pursue this line of maliciousness.
  • Mike_in_the_Tundra · 5 months ago
I have no doubt that Coleman is that much of a lowlife. The hardest thing about being a Minnesotan is seeing his smirk so often. It's worse than the coldest night in January.
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
I remember that same smirk coming from Dubya and had the same feeling of resentment.
  • JeepTreats · 5 months ago
Coleman congratulated Franken. He's not appealing. The jerk just held his breath and threw an expensive tantrum for 8 months!
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
Perhaps, the money finally ran out from the Republican Senate Committee funding this debacle. Good. He needs to get out of the public limelight and into private life.
  • Hardy_Haberman · 5 months ago
Welcome Senator Franken! It's about time.

No filibuster-proof majority with these DINOs still lumbering around:

    Nelson
    Lieberman
    Specter
    Feinstein
  • jpjones · 5 months ago
True, although you left out Bayh, Landrieu, Baucus, and the other Nelson. All of whom will have to be brought in line by Harry "Has-anyone-seen-my-spine-I-think-I-set-it-down-next-to-my-balls" Reid.
  • ndtovent · 5 months ago
    SOOOO true!
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
    Oh, there are more DINOs
    than that bunch of twits.
    Nearly sixteen.
( whadaya know, my first attempt at Haiku. ) ;-)
  • ezpz · 5 months ago
Will Franken get back pay and his legal fees reimbursed by the loser?
  • Ginger_FL · 5 months ago
I think Coleman has to pay Frankin's legal fees...I recall a news report about that a couple of weeks ago.

But what about Micheal Jackson....we need more Micheal news ;P (snark)

    Choppers Concedes!

Politico.com fosters the idea that he'll run for Governor to replace Tim Polenta.

Hah! He'll be too busy with staying out of prison . . .
  • scottinsf · 5 months ago
    Yay!

Although we'll have to wait and see how he does, I'm almost certain that Franken will be a great progressive vote/voice in the Senate. Something in very short supply.

Jeff Merkley from Oregon is another great new progressive in the Senate. He'll certainly be better than the repuke Gordon Smith who just got booted (despite one of our new gay "leaders", gay porn-producing millionaire Terrence Bean donating heavily to the mormon loser).
  • Ginger_FL · 5 months ago
Unfortunately, Frankin is NOT a progressive. If you ever suffered through is radio program, you'd know what I mean.
  • Dateline_Molly · 5 months ago
    Franken is no progressive.

For starters, he's a vocal AIPAC supporter. Expect him to vote for any war crimes funding crossing his desk.
  • Liberpassion · 5 months ago
It was Ronald Reagan who once said:

I don't know how anyone could possibly be President... without being an actor first!

I wish Franken all the best!
  • Harry_R_Sohl · 5 months ago
God, Republicans are surrender monkeys. They didn't even put up a fight.

They should just go by "SurrendeRepublicans".

Why can't Republicans steal elections anymore?
  • jasonut29 · 4 months ago
Just one more republican making a fool of himself. Whoever said the Dems are just going to continue to set back and wait for the republicans to take the congress back and then they can complain about partisainship.
  • mardod · 4 months ago
Somewhere deep in the heart of a Fox News Reality Protection Bunker, Billo's head has exploded.
