That's got to sting for McCain, just a little bit.

In other new, John McCain is re-elected in Arizona. Oh well I can live with that choice and I think she can do the job.
So who can hold the AZ governorship after she's gone?
publicsteele

The Attorney General (there is no Lt. Gov) and she's a Republican.

Actually, it is the Secretary of State.
Her name is Jan Brewer and she is a total wingnut. Hateful, hateful, hateful.

I'm gonna miss the totally ineffectual, bulgy-eyed skellington that was Chertoff. Sigh.

Yes, Skeletor's creepiness factor will be missed.

I'd like to suggest the first order of business, please....
CHANGE THE DAMN NAME!
I don't care how much money it costs. "Homeland Security" just sounds so Nazi-ish.

At least it's not Fatherland Security.

I always thought it sounded socialist like something out of the old Soviet Union. I agree, I don't like anything with "Homeland" in it. Since Bu$hco. has tried to nationalize our banks, Wall Street and White Collar industries so that they "can't fail" I'm wondering if maybe we should change U.S.A. to U.S.S.A.? United Socialist States of America? Again, I don't have a big problem with socialism as long as the target is to make life better for the poor. When we've socialized everything for the wealthy, and have hyper capitalism for the poor then that makes my blood boil. When we see executives fly in on their private jets with their hand out for tax dollars, it makes me realize just how disconnected the wealthy are from the average American. Its time for the handouts (aka bailouts) to start helping the poor.

Motion seconded. Dump the name by close of business on 20-January, and have the new letterhead ready by Friday morning.

Yep! I 3rd the motion.
Actually, I was hoping Obama would nominate someone like Sarah Palin and then cancel the department. Bush had given it a budget of billions and trillions all wasted on unbid contracts for Bush's corporate war industry buddies. It really has achieved nothing and we were far more secure without that boondoggle department. Worries me that Obama is keeping that awful department and that he would waste someone as qualified as Janet Napolitano on that department.
If he is keeping Homeland Security, seems like he also intends to continue Bush's policy of shortchanging FEMA. That is disgusting. Is he also going to neglect New Orleans again after the next hurricane devastates that city again. Don't answer. Sigh! As Ayman al-Zawahri said, Obama's a house N----- for the military-industrial complex.

Napolitano has always come across as smart, no-nonsense and strictly business. I like the choice.

John Dingell out as chairman of Energy and Commerce Committee! Waxman will be the new chair. Awesome news!

In the Charlie Rose interview of 10/12/07 Janet Napolitano comes across as competent and intelligent whereas her co-interviewee, Sarah Palin always seems to guide the topic back to her old standby, energy policy and generally says a lot of things without really saying anything. If this is reprised in 2012 or 2016 as a Presidential matchup it should be interesting.....

OT: for those watching the MN recount. this is the best site:
but notice that the adjustments include the challenged ballots, most of which will be restored. so if coleman has challenged 20 more ballots than franken, chances are you can add 20 to franken's column. with that adjustment, franken gained about 60 today with less than 1/5 of the votes recounted. if you extrapolate, you get a gain of 300 for franken, enough to overcome the 215 vote deficit going in. it all depends on whether today's counting is representative.

Sweet FSM, when you get a spare second, do you think maybe she could spend maybe a few hours reviewing what's happening with students visas and start fixing it before our mid-twentieth century regulations overlaid with the onerous IRAIRA fiasco of the 90s kills every bit of hope we have for attracting the best and brightest to the US for school? Top of my list is some regulation that makes sense in a world full of distance learners who have to come to the US for short-term (5-21 days) residence that doesn't involve treating every farking entry as if they're new students every time.

Az grows a special breed to wack-azz politician & it'll be to the state's detriment that Janet leave. However, she needs to muscle-up before her Senate run. I hope she takes on Jon Kyle & won't that be a race worthy of a Gore Vidal screenplay.

Interesting. The job seems like a thankless, snake pit of a mess but maybe she can make something of it.

From my point of view, she has done a great job as governor of my home state. Arizona has a lot of problems, and she has dealt with them with grace and common sense. With that in mind, I am worried about the leadership vacuum that will be left behind. I'm purely being selfish. Good for America, bad for my state :)

No good news here, now she can’t take Grandpa McCrazy’s senate seat in 2010!
Also, she’ll have to answer to Holy Joe’s committee when he decides to cause a little mischief for his ex-friends in the Democratic Party. Count on it!

This is an absolute disaster for Arizona. It puts our state into the hands of a rabid rightwinger (Jan Brewer) who will tear down any progress or positive things that have been done during Napolitano's term. Janet was our "veto" against a Mormon rightwingnut legislature. Arizona is now, officially, doomed by the Obama transition team. We don't understand why they would take her, the Dem governor of a really RED state. She could stay for 2 years (she is term limited in 2010) and kick McCain's a** in the Senate Race. Very very bad planning and a horrible thing to do to a purple state that was desperately trying to turn blue.
