AMERICAblog: Breaking: Palin to quit as governor of Alaska

  • yawn · 4 months ago
right now would be a good time for obama to stop-loss dadt.
  • leliorisen · 4 months ago
    Clever!
  • leliorisen · 4 months ago
Although, after Sanford and Michael Jackson, the ideal time was actually this past week.
  • nicho · 4 months ago
Like he gives a shit about DADT. He would use the smokescreen to give more money to Goldman Sachs.
  • yawn · 4 months ago
true that. i was just making a suggestion just in case he was reading.
  • cowboyneok · 4 months ago
Just one more example of why people had NO BUSINESS voting for Sarah Palin for Vice President. Dear G-d, please let it not be another Republican depraved scandal! I'm hoping and praying we don't find out Todd was caught with male prostitutes wearing dirty diapers or something else that is "family values" Republican! I'm thinking there is some kind of scandal waiting to break.
  • woodroad34 · 4 months ago
The scandal(s) have already broken. Any new scandal would be icing on the cake--or the last straw. She says she's escaping the govenorship so the attention to her ethical lapses will go away. Again proving her loose grasp on the concept of reality. Once she's out there without the Alaskan government's funding and the ability to hide behind her office, she'll really be fair game. They'll hunt her down to find out what the outcome would have been if she had stayed. Not to mention that she's now "the quitter". Gone are the days of "that Shrill Governor"
  • nicho · 4 months ago
The rumor is that her baby's father was really Mark Sanford and he's about to confess.
  • hrh · 4 months ago
And they're the parents of Blanket. Come on, who else would name a baby that?
  • Fly2gethigh · 4 months ago
Maybe she was caught sleeping with Mark Sanford.

    LMAO!

    More Info?

Palin is a criminal. ". . . . possible federal indictments against Palin, concerning an embezzlement scandal related to the building of Palin’s house and the Wasilla Sports Complex built during her tenure as Mayor." A very unethical governor, she was about to be indicted, according to RS.
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
That story has been around since at least last August. I think that is important to point out too. We all knew about those windows and the sports complex since the election. Don't you think the prime time to strike for that would have been the election? She certainly deserves prosecutions for that, but I'm inclined to think it is something bigger and newer. Better, faster, stronger...
  • nicho · 4 months ago
    Sarah quits her job
    Can scandal be far behind

    I love this!

Think about this logically for a second.

If you are making this kind of announcement in order to begin a run for the presidency, you time it for maximum impact. You announce it on a Monday or late on a Sunday to dominate the news cycles for a week. Then, it will be the topic of the next Sunday's talking head shows.

In other words, you want to milk it for all you can and get the most bang for your buck.

When you dump something late on Friday afternoon of a long holiday weekend, you want the story to die a quick death. You want it to be old news by Monday and old and tired by the following Sunday talking head shows.

And this weekend is more of a story killer than most others, since it's the beginning of summer vacation for so many people. Also, more people celebrate this holiday more intensely than anything with the exception of Thanksgiving.

So, no, this doesn't seem like something you'd do to launch your presidential bid. This has all the earmarks of trying to stuff the story.
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
I think you are only 300% correct. The only thing I can't figure out is why there are vocal sheep in the press conference and she rambled on about nonsense for 10 minutes.

BTW, I mean real sheep. Not like sheeple, although they were there too. :-)
  • SD_Dave · 4 months ago
My guess is the noises you hear are probably ducks as her presser took place next to a body of water.
  • yawn · 4 months ago
i thought so too, but then again, she's not the brightest bulb.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 4 months ago
    Ding! Ding! Ding!

    We have a winner!
  • ndtovent · 4 months ago
    ROFL !!
  • SD_Dave · 4 months ago
There is ONE major flaw in your premise. What is that? You imply that Palin is capable of using logic.
  • mirth · 4 months ago
Sumpthin' is bubbling to the top. I have suspicions about what it is and not connected to it I predict:

A new Libertarian-type, anti-government, 3rd political party is brewing and she will be their 2012 candidate.
  • nicho · 4 months ago
Well, there go the GOP's hopes in 2012. They will suck off 20 percent from the bottom of the GOP barrel. Obama will glide in like he was on rollerblades.
  • mirth · 4 months ago
    I dunno, nicho.

Yes, the Republicans will be dead if this happens, but I fear a very large segment of our population would vote for her and this anti-gov't Libertarian party.

If there's no scandal breaking through, then her quitting a governorship means she already has the groundwork in place.
  • devlzadvocate · 4 months ago
I believe you are on to sumthin'. When you re-read her list of "accomplishments" from the presser, it does kind of set the stage for that, doens't it???

    Good thinkin.
  • mirth · 4 months ago
Yep. Just listen to her. She's saying gov't is bad and she can't be a part of it. Sez to me she is planning to rise again in some form of Libertarian.

Keep an eye out for statements about her announcement from Ron Paul and his bots.
  • okojo · 4 months ago
It is not going to happen. As much as it will get PR attention, a candidate needs thousands of worker doing lots of grudge work that only a major political organization like the Democratic Party or the GOP can do.

She needs fundraising, not one SarahPAC. Why Obama went from a one term Senator to President was how he and his team knew how to fundraise..
  • mirth · 4 months ago
    I repeat from below:

If there's no scandal breaking through, then her quitting a governorship means she already has the groundwork in place.
  • okojo · 4 months ago
She doesn't have the money, the fundraising network, the staff, the advisors etc. She isn't going to go far if she doesn't take advice from seasoned political pros. She will follow the same path as Katherine Harris, who was renown in not taking advice, who received much of same bad press as Palin, as alienated staff leaked to the press.
  • mirth · 4 months ago
Of course I hope you are right, but we have no way of knowing her political assets. If what I suspect is true, then she didn't quit a governorship without a solid network behind her.
  • Busboy · 4 months ago
What can I say, Mirth? I think you explicated the scenarios with your usual skill. I lean toward the scandal side for this reason: Politicians always like to break bad news on Friday. Everything from bank closures to troop deaths. Did Sanford break silence on a Friday? I don't remember. If not, he should have....
  • mirth · 4 months ago
    Hi bb :)

True that Friday news dumps are to minimize something, and in this case it could be to limit her "quitter" taint.

If there were a scandal looming, I think she would have alluded to it in some way, made some attempt to lessen its impact.

I'm betting she is our next Perot and her appeal will be much wider than his.
  • okojo · 4 months ago
It is perplexing why she would do this on a Friday newsdump, with a very rambling speech, which gives really no reason other than she is kind of not into the job.

If she wanted to make a mark, run for governor in 2010 wait for 2016. Actually have bona fide press conference, and go on the Sunday News shows.

The big rumor, that is going around viral on the "internets" is IRS problems..
  • Busboy · 4 months ago
She does have the "Perot"; 'pull the car off the road and Fix it' mentality; but, I don't see where the money would come from. Perot spent a lot of his own money.
  • ndtovent · 4 months ago
Very possible, mirth. I hadn't thought about that angle. However, I think she's too socially conservative to appeal to most true libertarians.
  • judybrowni · 4 months ago
    Wow, you may be right!

But if you take their wingnut base from the Republicans, what the hell will they have left?

    And who cares.
  • downindixie · 4 months ago
Boy! She sure pissed off McCain's people. If you can make them, you can break them!
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 4 months ago
    86 year-old Betty White said it best: " . . . one crazy bitch."

Her presser is especially incoherent and breathless. Some real bad shit is comin' down, folks.

This isn't about one article pushing her over the edge. Or Steve Schmidt's carping. This reeks of PANIC.
  • Bubbles · 4 months ago
Well, apperently its not coming down before the end of July.
  • Ninong · 4 months ago
This is fantastic! It means we will have unbridled Sarah Palin 24/7 from coast to coast and sea to shining sea running for the 2012 Goppie nomination. This will be hilarious! I wonder if Joe the Plumber will tour with her?

Any chance this will displace Michael Jackson as the lead story on any of the cable channels? Nah, I doubt it. They're locked in to Michael Jackson coverage 24/7 until after the pay-per-view funeral.
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
I don't think you advance your career by resigning. That is a campaign tv spot right there. Sarah Palin: Doesn't get the job done.
  • nicho · 4 months ago
Yeah -- you don't quit your day job three and a half years out.
  • devlzadvocate · 4 months ago
You got that right. Who will vote for a person who quits half way through the job. Put that on your resume - "Governor for two years then quit because I got the job done early." The winning way is to stay in office OR say you are quitting to run for another office. She didn't do that.

No, I don't think you get elected to anything after what she did and how she did it. No speech to the legislature? A backyard impromptu announcment. Nice!

And what animals were in the background? The Wasilla goats?
  • threadmonitor · 4 months ago
    devlzadvocate,

Your other comment here was deleted only because it was a duplicate.
  • Ninong · 4 months ago
    Don't tell her that. LOL

She was constantly complaining that she was too restricted by the McCain people the last time out. I can't wait to see what she will be like all on her own.
  • Btalk314 · 4 months ago
I hope this is the beginning of a trend with gop governors. We are truly suffering in California, and we would be greatly relieved if Schwartzenegger would resign at the end of the month.
  • nicho · 4 months ago
As much as I think Arnold is an idiot, the problem in CA isn't the governor or the legislature. It's the insane law that allows a handful of corporate stooges to hold the budget process hostage and oppose any sensible budget.
  • Ginger_FL · 4 months ago
    Dam Chris...you're fast !

  • Bubbles · 4 months ago
I wish they'd go after the wall street types, health insurance CEOs and the guys at Big Pharma as well.
  • nicho · 4 months ago
In other words, the Democratic leaders.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 4 months ago
She had to blame to the media: "picking apart a good point guard."

    Oh, the self-pity, the drama!

She would, of course, pick the Friday News Dump Day Before Independence Day.
  • castellan · 4 months ago
It's pretty clear she's running for President... At least we won't stop seeing her stupidity in the press. :-)
  • Bubbles · 4 months ago
She couldn't handle 3 years running Alaska, with its population of 300,000, how is she going to be able to convince people that she can handle the nations 300,000,000?

Oh I forgot, this is America and we elected humpty dumpty Bush, twice. Welll, sort of, anyway.
  • okojo · 4 months ago
If she thinks this is a good way to run for President, she has some big obstacles in her way. She has been Governor for 2 1/2 year. Romney was governor for one term.

Why President George W. Bush ran for President in 2000, not because he was qualified or he was competent, but he had a very good organization and fundraising, much of it taken from his father's operations.

Palin doesn't have any of that, it sounds like she is trying to cash in on her notoriety
  • Ginger_FL · 4 months ago
Does this mean T O D will have to get a new job ;P
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 4 months ago
The dirt that's coming must be spectacular!

    Indictments coming down?

Levi spilling the beans about Trig?

    An affair with Sanford?

  • nicho · 4 months ago
Maybe Todd had an affair with Sanford. God knows Sanford boinked everyone else.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 4 months ago
She actually bitched out Sanford as one of those (unnamed) lame duck governors who just globe-trot on trade junkets.
  • HelenRainier · 4 months ago
Sarah has the hots for Levi -- yeah, that's it!

i'll take schadenfreude for $1000, alex!
  • lark83 · 4 months ago
I think the Vanity Fair article pushed her over the edge.
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
Look at that, Sarah Palin DOES know how to pull out, after all.
  • SD_Dave · 4 months ago
She learned that lesson a little too late.
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
Jindal, Sanford, Palin who is out there digging up the dirt and beating down the GOP before the next election?
  • nicho · 4 months ago
The corporatists. They've got a BFF in Obama and they don't want anyone screwing that up. When Obama is handing you the keys to the treasury (and our pocketbooks) you don't want some loony bin like Palin, Jindal, Sanford, or Fuckabee to come in and screw things up.
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
i'd buy that if I didn't think the corporations would flourish (even more) under GOP leadership.
  • nicho · 4 months ago
I'm starting a pool on how long it is before she's a regular "political analyst" on Faux News.
  • okojo · 4 months ago
She is an idiot, she can't construe a constructive thought, she would be ridicule even on Faux News.
  • woodroad34 · 4 months ago
  • nicho · 4 months ago
I was unaware that you had to make any sense at all to be a personality on Faux. If Glen Beck can make it, so can Sarah Palin.
  • okojo · 4 months ago
She can't even construe good arguments for far right conservative issues, because she doesn't know them. Much like she goes on that the US Constitution has a right to privacy, (Alaska's constitution has a right to privacy) Any bona fide conservative doesn't believe in the right of privacy.

Roe v. Wade's foundation is a Right to Privacy!, so she adamantly against abortion but for something that is the cornerstone of Roe v. Wade.

She is too ignorant and stupid even for Conservatives. She may know Alaska issues well, but that is different than transmitting that to the lower 48 during Fox News Sunday.
  • Truman1 · 4 months ago
Absolutely correct. She could not conduct an interview/incompetent...remember she never went on any Sunday talk shows during the election campaign..
  • devlzadvocate · 4 months ago
That's what I'm sayin'. If Eliot Spitzer can be an analyst on MSNBC, Palin can be a cleaning lady at Fox.
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
There is one huge difference between the two, Spitzer was good at his job.
  • Bubbles · 4 months ago
Palin is good at cleaning. Just ask the people at Neiman Marcus.
  • GusII · 4 months ago
She will make a bundle on speaking fees for the next couple of years, she could not do that as a sitting governor. Watch for her to be a sub on some FOX show and be a king maker with the base she gathered. That's if she doesn't run.
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
There is a job Sarah Palin can campaign for and I'd vote for her. The Beck-Palin-Bachman variety hour on Fox News.
  • Bubbles · 4 months ago
She could also make even more in the porn industry - she already has Rich Lowry as a fan.

Then again, Fox News is a form of pornography: political porn.

So I guess we are both in agreement here: she's headed for the pornography industry, most likely the political pornography industry of Fox News.
  • okojo · 4 months ago
This is a head shaker. She is either ignoring good advice or receiving bad advice.
  • devlzadvocate · 4 months ago
    Let's hope for both
  • woodroad34 · 4 months ago
Yes to both those points. It's obvious from the recent McCain staff emails that she doesn't listen to good advice--she only cares about what she wants...absolute mentally unbalanced divahood.
  • tlsintx · 4 months ago
can't WAIT to find out what's going on...
  • nicho · 4 months ago
DNC is already attacking here on it:

"Either Sarah Palin is leaving the people of Alaska high and dry to pursue her long shot national political ambitions or she simply can't handle the job now that her popularity has dimmed and oil revenues are down," DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse said.

"Either way, her decision to abandon her post and the people of Alaska who elected her continues a pattern of bizarre behavior that more than anything else may explain the decision she made today."
  • Jophus · 4 months ago
They were ready for this. That was too quick to issue a statement.
  • dreadpiraterobert · 4 months ago
From WaPo: "Palin, 45, is a major star in the GOP and is seen as a leading candidate for the party's presidential nomination in 2012."

Really? What alternate universe are they in? Most of the country thinks, nay, KNOWS that she's a narcissistic loonybird. Wow.
  • nicho · 4 months ago
Well, looking at the GOP, it doesn't take much to be a major star. The place is pretty much of an insane asylum at this point.

And, while it's hard to believe, there are people who are still heartbroken she didn't get elected. I am related to some of those people.
  • houstonray · 4 months ago
And she IS the star loonybird at the moment.

Oh, and nicho, I work with some of those same people too. They just believe she is the best thing that could happen to the country. I'm sure they are apoplectic over the thought that she's going to be out there now 24/7 'running' for 2012.

God I hope there is some huge scandal....I can't wait to watch this unfold.
  • nicho · 4 months ago
A friend's mother and father idolize Sarah. They said one day, "She would be perfect for president. She's just like us." And before God could stop me, the devil made me blurt out "Maybe, but I don't want you running the country either."
  • ndtovent · 4 months ago
all the better to push her into accepting the nomination, thereby guaranteeing another term for obama
  • bobbyjoe · 4 months ago
Obviously, it was that David Letterman joke; it's left her so completely distraught she can no longer function.
  • Bubbles · 4 months ago
Well all that worry that she would outlast and succeed McCain turned out to be much to do about nothing after all.

I guess the presidency thing is kaput. If she can't handle 4 years of running Alaska, with its 300,000, how can she handle running the U.S, with 300,000,000 people?

    The question is why?

Is Alaska about to go into default? Are the Palin's connected to Neo-Nazis in the Alaskan separatist cause? Does Palin have a latin lover? Was she tapped to give Sanford an example to follow?

I suppose I'm risking David Letterman waters here, but, I've heard people use her name and 'porn star' in the same paragraph, if not the same sentence. Maybe she found out just how much money is in that industry.

Alternatively she could be headed to Fox news, which is a form of pornography itself, that is, political pornography (in my mind - btw, I get my political porn from MSNBC).

Can't wait to find out about this skeleton.
  • mikeyDe · 4 months ago

Is there a pool out there yet? As to when the scandal that caused this will be revealed?

It is 2009. If she runs for prez next time, the campaign generally doesn't start strongly until 2 years out -- 2011, when she gets out of office anyway.

No, there is another reason ..... I can't wait to find out WHAT.

So you think it is money, not sex? It's a tough call right? I go with money too.

Edit: Why not both? She is the type of person who would be stupid enough to fly around sleeping with people for money/air time on the Alaskan dollar.
  • woodroad34 · 4 months ago
I'm just shaking my head. She believes, that once she leaves, everything will calm down and all her ethical lapses/investigations will simply melt away like sugar in water. Her shrill behavior under the pressure of the attention afforded her for just running for VP, her practical screaming and hair pulling histrionics about Dave Letterman, the baby daddy affair, the wolf shooting, the bridge to nowhere, oil partnerships, and just intellect in general (she's dumber than Bush) just goes to show there will be one nuclear war after another if she becomes president. She hasn't the temperament or emotional maturity to market herself correctly, let alone run a country.

I too believe there is some scandal about to hit. I mean, running for 2012, she could have announced that she would not seek a second term, which would have been totally appropriate, blah blah about working for the people of Alaska, etc, and then speculation about running after she left office would have been rampant, and she could play coy.

Instead she not only said she wouldn't seek a second term, she is leaving in a matter of days. What could make her want to give up the remainder of her term?

No, it's not 2012, I think there is something much bigger coming...

Another possibility is that with the oil revenue drying up -- coupled with her loony Republican ideas -- Alaska is headed for fiscal disaster, and she knows it. After all, the GOP policies have bankrupted states everywhere. The only thing that's keeping Alaska going is the oil money. If Alaskans don't get their welfare checks (I mean "oil revenue checks"), there's going to be hell to pay -- and Sarah wants to blame that on someone else.

My friend in Alaska says the Lieutenant Governor was picked to pacify conservatives, in other words from a liberal/progressive standpoint he's worse than Palin. Another friend in Alaska says some Alaskans are pissed at her for disappearing and not doing basic governing (people where handing out "Where's Sarah?" buttons at folk fest.

I am thinking she either got added to "Saturday Night Live," or will be doing a nightly report on "Abstinence: For Fun & Profit" on Fox.

She does not have the intelligence to be a host on Fox or anywhere..She never appeared on Meet the Press,eg during the campaign. But come to think of it, she would be very entertaining to watch as a Fox host, waiting for all the stupid comments to flow forth. The Fox ratings might shoot up!
Waiting for the other shoe to drop? It did already but the press gave her a pass-- Her daughter's out of wedlock presidency and the oxymoronic Far Right defending her and seekings sympathy and understanding. Pardon me while I laugh and then puke.

I agree with everything you said, Truman, except for:
''She does not have the intelligence to be a host on Fox."
Neither intelligence nor common sense have ever been prerequisites for being a host (or speaking) on Fox.
    Happy 4th to you!

Glenn Beck has intelligence? Sean Hannity?

All you need to do are memorize RNC talking points. But a good teleprompter can help.

I think that Palin didn't resign because of a scandal because her preemptive resignation would only inflame the situation.

Palin is going to embark on the world's longest run for President and thanks to this, she will land on the front page every time she says something because she has all but announced that she will be on the ballot in three years.

I wrote an article about what I think the deal with Palin is at http://www.polwonk.com/2009/07/what-sarah-palin...

Hmmm, Sarah Palin quits, Kate Gosselin goes on hiatus from pimping out her kids for money.......what are the chances that two famous, clueless, mean, materialistic baby factories with messiah complexes decide to go underground at the same time?

Did a Scandal Sink the U.S.S. Palin?
    by Max Blumenthal

Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide-open state.

SBS has close ties to the Palins. The company has not only sponsored Todd Palin's snowmobile team, according to the Village Voice's Wayne Barrett, it hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004.

Though Todd Palin told Fox News he built his Lake Lucille home with the help of a few "buddies," according to Barrett’s report, public records revealed that SBS supplied the materials for the house. While serving as mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin blocked an initiative that would have required the public filing of building permits—thus momentarily preventing the revelation of such suspicious information.

Just months before Palin left city hall to campaign for governor, she awarded a contract to SBS to help build the $13 million Wasilla Sports Complex. The most expensive building project in Wasilla history, the complex cost the city an additional $1.3 million in legal fees and threw it into severe long-term debt. For SBS, however, the bloated and bungled project was a cash cow.

This idiot thinks she can learn enough in a couple of years to run for President in 2012. Make no mistake about it, this idiot will run and there are enough idiots out there to vote for her. What is this country coming to? This may be our future. Think about it and vote accordingly.
