AMERICAblog: BREAKING: Rick Warren praised Israel-hating terror state Syria as a "moderate country" that treats its Jews great!

  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Hundreds of thousands of professional men and women of the cloth, and Obama has to validate and elevate this one. I am wondering who effed it up on the transition and inaugural teams. It's called "google," people.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
these winger preachers so often turn out to be just plain dumb.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
I just watched that interview with Ann Curry. Wow. I'm not at all surprised by what he said but that he would say that crap at all at this point.

Now is the time for Obama to admit he made a mistake, make a full apology for choosing Warren, and choose another person. The outrage is building and this is not going to end well if Obama keeps the current course. This is completely unacceptable.
  • BHBuck · 1 year ago
    How embarrassingly disgraceful.

The PUMAs are laughing their asses off right about now.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Warren's knowledge about Syria comes from a Syrian Tourist Office brochure.
  • Tom · 1 year ago
Will CNN report this part of the story?

Well you all should have voted for McCain and really been happy

We do not accept betrayal by our friends simply because our enemies are worse.
  • CCaitlyn · 1 year ago
Wow John. That language is so gangster. So what are you gonna do about it, take your ball and go home? And how childish are we gonna look if Jewish bloggers don't spend the next 3 days freaking out over Rick Warren because he didn't do what we progressives accuse Bush of doing, declare all Muslims terrorists. You really nuked the fridge big time, joining the loons in essentially branding anyone who has a kind word for any Muslim country an antisemite. Considering your previous position on the Middle East I'm totally clueless now if you're a hypocrite or an antisemite.
  • coolcatdaddy · 1 year ago
Have you wondered why some progressives don't take the political process in the US seriously?

If you don't have a seat at the table and feel like you're getting respect, you don't take your ball and go home, you just leave the game completely and go off creating your own game.

Do Obama and the Democrats really want adhoc protests by groups of progressives dogging them the next four years?
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
You mean Ralph Nader. Friends don't let friends vote Republican. Ever!
  • AgentX · 1 year ago
    First!
Yup....Rick Warren really did it this time. I thought Obama was gonna throw him under the bus after the invocation. But now it looks like he's gonna hafta do it before January even gets here.
Yup...if there's one group you don't wanna tick off, it's the Jews. That bus is coming real quick Rev Warren.

What's with evangelical preachers and the Jews? Haven't they learned their lesson yet? "Open mouth, insert foot" is supposed to be a warning, not instructions.

Y'know, President Obama...this religious stuff isn't your thing. Every single Rev. you meet has all kinds of issues. Just give up, man. Just be an atheist or a rejectionist and you can avoid all this church drama. There might be other drama, but at least you won't have a pastor with loose lips sinking your ships.
  • CrumblyTofu · 1 year ago
You know it's serious when I get linked to WingNutDaily on my favorite site. Please, a little warning wouldn't hurt! I've been betrayed enough already.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
LOL sorry, but they had the audio, so as goofy as they are, they got this one right.
  • queerarab · 1 year ago
As a gay man who has spent a lot of time in Syria and Lebanon... I can assure you that the stereotypes we have in the US about Syria are false...

By comparison to other countries in the region they are quite more progressive..

that said, the Assad regime has many flaws and in my opinion should be changed.

However, I challenge anyone reading this to point to any credible source of news were Syria claimed that they want to kill all jews or destroy Israel... heck, they have reached out a few times to the zionist state only to be flat out rejected.

If we're going to go after Warren with something, let's make sure we use facts and we don't vilify others... there is nothing more pathetic than one minority group gaining ground at the expense of another (see prop 8)
  • Kermit · 1 year ago
I agree, John Aravosis' post is careless and extreme. Since when has Syria been committed to the murder of all Jews? (don't believe everything you read, unless you know from personal experience) Why is criticism of Israel, or even being at war with Israel over contested territory - which the UN agrees Israel illegally occupies - anti-semitism? It is not. John is conflating opposition to the state of Israel as anti-semitism, and by extension support for the Holocaust. He should chill out on the kool-aid. I think Rick Warren is a pig, but John sounds like he's a little to the right of AIPAC.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Dumbass doesn't know that we outsource torture there. Moderate, indeed.
  • Greensburg · 1 year ago
but but but...everyone knows the evanjeelycall peoples just loves them some jews...so how could anyone EVER believe that the new young leader of the evan jeely calls could say something like that? its' just sound bites...yeah..thats it...its just a sound bite that is being used to make him look bad. there is your latest excuse / talking point / reason. so there.
  • Bush Bites · 1 year ago
    Well, I can't stand Warren.....

But I never really saw Syria as the center of evil that the Bushies made it out to be.

    Flame away.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Bush LOVED Syria when it agreed to become a rendition site.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
When, Oh , When will politicians learn that a hate monger is a hate monger? There is no such thing as a really nice guy who just hates gays, but is really great on all the other issues.

When you hate and distort and lie, you do that across the board -- your ideological blinders are so strong that you can't separate out issues.

So are we surprised that Warren thinks Syria is a great country? Of course not. I can't wait for his views on women, global warming, immigrants, and all the other cultural issues. Obama is going to realize that he's a loose cannon.
  • JohnInTexas · 1 year ago
And they say Friday is a slow news day. LMAO...
  • Bluebear · 1 year ago
I don't know what the fuss is all about, Rick Warren is only going to sing ONE SONG.

Me neither. Just riffing on McClurkin :)
  • JohnInTexas · 1 year ago
Hell the Christians don't play nicey nice with the Jews over here half the time, Rev DumbDumb stuck both feet in it this time.
  • wearing out my F key · 1 year ago
so rick warren, and by association, obama, are for "the destruction of state of Israel and the death of all Jews"

now that's how you load the arguement!

but i don't think syria is a member of the axis of evil.
  • Bush Bites · 1 year ago
    But they're hiding Saddam's WMDs.

I saw it on Fox News!

(I'm straight, so maybe I'm missing something.

But I think that Warren shouldn't be allowed to speak during the inauguration strictly because of his intolerance toward gay Americans....and picking up neocon talking points to add to the case just muddies the purity of the argument.)
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
    My brain fart, you're right.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
What really pisses me off about this whole thing is that Obama and his staffers seem to think that gay-bashing really isn't that bad. Hey, lots of nice people do it! And they honestly believe gays are demons! So who are we to silence them?

They just don't get that today, most people are actually pretty gay friendly or dont' particularly care one way or another. The only ones who are obsessed with hating gays are weirdos, kooks, religious right wingnuts. If you find a gay bashing homophobe, you don't have to dig much further to find wild claims about lots of other stuff, just as John as found.

that Obama thinks that a gay bashing preacher can be perfectly fine on everything else is naive at best. Perhaps he will learn that there is no such thing as reaching out to a mentally ill person. He needs professional help to deal with his anger and hate, not rewards.
  • R_Elland · 1 year ago
Maybe this is why he ask Rick Warren to do the Invocation. Not to actually extend a hand of friendship, but to push Warren's real views into the public eye for all to see.
If that's the case, the man is a frikkin' genius.
  • mamazboy · 1 year ago
Warren's an opportunist and a liar. Why doesn't he mention that Saddam Hussein had no problem with Christians in his country, including Seventh-Day Adventists, who've stated they were well treated there during his reign. Warren has no guts and no core principles.
  • brian · 1 year ago
    Dude, relax.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
You're right. Equating me and tends of millions of other Americans to pedophiles and rapists is no big deal.
  • brian · 1 year ago
I was referring to the topic of this article: Warren's views on Syria, not his homophobic comments.

I think if you look at this pragmatically, we have a lot more to gain by courting the religious right than we do to lose. Obama has already explicitly stated his support of LGBT rights - what more do you want in this country we live in?
  • thejoshuablog · 1 year ago
Can you please NOT link to Debbie Schlussel or the nut site WorldNetDaily, unless it's to make fun of them? These are not legitimate news sources.

I'm just as upset about Rick Warren, but these two are not 'news' sources. They're a hotbed on raving lunacy.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Unfortunately they are news when they have the original audio tape to prove that he said this.
  • thejoshuablog · 1 year ago
    :-( I hate that!
  • james k. sayre · 1 year ago
In the 21st century, the bush gangster regime is the biggest terrorist of all. We have murdered over one million Iraqis and over fifty-thousand Afghanis.

In the Middle East, Israel has been an imperial power, backed by Britain and the US, for about sixty years. Remember the imperial Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon a couple of years ago? The Israelis dropped millions of cluster bombs (made in USA) on the Lebanonese countryside. Syria? They are stuck living next door to both US-occupied Iraq on one side and imperial Israel on another side. You would probably not want to live in Syria these days...
  • kingbuzzo · 1 year ago
Syria is a relatively great country, in some respects better than Israel (they certainly don't kill as many people, although both countries like to torture).

You're just hating on Syria because you are mad about gay marriage.

I am mad about Prop 8, too. But I'm not gonna start talking like Michelle Malkin, because Rick Warren said something nice about Syria.

The more stuff like this I read, the more I worry that the gay rights movement is on the verge of self-destruction. I know and you know that gay rights is serious business... so let's stop acting like children... and start working like grown-ups.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Syria is a great country? Uh huh...
  • kingbuzzo · 1 year ago
They are about as good as their neighbors.... I know it's not saying much... But Debbie Schlussel? Really?

How is it any better for AmericaBlog to link to Schlussell, who hates gays (and everyone else) more than Rick Warren, than it is for Obama to "link" to Rick Warren?

At least Rick Warren is going to give some blandly positive invocation which contrasts sharply with his deeper, darker feelings.

You are linking to Debbie Schlussel's hate site BECAUSE of its anti-Muslim content to prove a point about another bigot.

Not to be a jerk... because I have been reading AmericaBlog for years. But, seriously, it's like you have gone over the edge or something. The problem with Rick Warren is not that he likes Syria. The problem with Rick Warren is that he is a cultural conservative who believes that his religious views should be law.

But having said that, he's not taking a cabinet position or anything. So what if Obama is trying to co-opt conservatives? Warren has moved the mainstream of evangelical thought further to the left than any other figure. It seems like a good idea.

People need to understand that we are living at a critical moment for gay rights. And the nature of this moment is generational. Older people tend to oppose gay rights. Young people tend to accept them. Change is inevitable, hence the intensity of the backlash. Alienating everyone by threatening and belligerent alarmist only adds to the intensity of the conflict. We need a little more MLK and a little less Malcolm X.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Ask Maher Arar just how great Syria is. And he's one who lived to tell the tale.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Exactly. Such a great moderate country that we used them to outsource our torture.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
I'm reserving judgment until we hear the spin control from Rahm Emmanuel.

Warren is just trying to sell books. He'll say whatever is appropriate depending on what country he's in, just pure republican that one.
  • LLDEM · 1 year ago
Keep it up guys... Palin this asshat.
  • JohnInTexas · 1 year ago
Speaking of Palin, is she a grandma yet? Bristol is overdue according to the due date they gave.
  • Bush Bites · 1 year ago
I think she's due tomorrow, actually.

Her "possible future mother in law" just got busted for making and selling narcotics, by the way.

    Meth, I'm guessing.
  • JohnInTexas · 1 year ago
Due date was Dec 18th last I heard. They're probably racing Bristol over the hills and bumps on a snow mobile trying to get her to go in labor 2 months early LOL
  • RainbowPhoenix · 1 year ago
Every woman and every pregnancy is different. Because this is Bristol's first child, it can only be assumed that she'll give birth within two weeks before or after the due date.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
Baby is going to have to go visit grandma Johnston in prison now that she got busted.
  • Randy · 1 year ago
One of the major reasons that Obama chose Warren was to 'reach out' the Christianists who didn't vote for him. He wants people like Warren, and those whom he represents, to think that they can trust Obama and should support him.

But when you have him saying things like this, this defeats the whole purpose of choosing him. What religious right nut is going to support Obama, who gives such visible support to this guy who thinks Syria is just great?

THAT's why you link to the WorldnetDaily. Because it shows that Obama's strategy is failing with the exact people he is trying to court.

This is a disaster on many fronts.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
That's a good point too. We hate him and they hate him. So with whom does he help?
  • thejoshuablog · 1 year ago
That's exactly what Rachel Maddow was talking about last night:

Meanwhile, the shoe-thrower is beaten in "democratic" Iraq. supposedly we don't have to kow-tow in a democracy to "leaders". Sure, it was an attack, with shoes, which realistically was less than a fist, in damage it could have done, so yeah...an attack. The guy is spirited away, no lawyer has the right apparently to DEMAND habeus corpus, to get to see the person, or to ensure he is being treated well...what a wonderful gift of democracy (lite) Bush has "given them". Wonder why they aren't more grateful...

    And in truly bizzare announcement:
"He also proposed that the shoes themselves should be put in an Iraqi museum. But al-Kinani, the judge, said the shoes had been destroyed by investigators trying to determine if they had contained explosives."

Someone doesn't want there to be any evidence, to use to fire up the people. Wonder who that could be? I mean, Bush was all "mr. Cool" about it..."no big deal", but behind the scenes, one wonders if the telephone lines are burning up with "BURN that mother!"
  • Kelly · 1 year ago
Bill Clinton took tens of millions of dollars from the Saudi's who treat women like rabid dogs and allow school girls to burn alive rather than escape without their headgear. I guess that makes Bill Clinton comparable to the KKK and he absoutely should be disinvited and kicked off the planet!

    I'm OUTRAGED!

Why do you have to make some stupid-ass, nonsensicle, provocational response to every other comment here?
  • johnosahon · 1 year ago
they should replace warren with Rev. Wright, at least he supports gay marriage, better yet they should scrap the whole inauguration, there is no time for that mess anyways there are things Obama needs to do, no time to waste. So scrapping the inauguration would at least offend NO ONE.
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
So scrapping the inauguration would at least offend NO ONE.

Although you are being factious, I don't think it is a bad idea. The eight or whatever inauguration balls that Obama is obligated to attend is perhaps the worst example of excess and overspending in our society, and vast tribute to the moneybags, the corporations, elite, wealthy and powerful, the exact opposite of the people, the nation and egalitarianism, which somehow I may be the only one who thinks is core Americanism. Canceling the inauguration celebrations and having a quiet modest ceremony in the Oval Office might the very best way Obama could actually prove he is one of us and not one of THEM.
  • johnosahon · 1 year ago
BREAKING: we just learnt that bill clinton signed the homophobic DADT and DOMA, he is also associated with the in-coming secretary of state by marriage, SHE (Hillary) should not be allowed to serve in Obama's cabinet, since Mr. and mrs. Clinton are homophobic (what is worse than passing homophobic policies), it would mean that Obama is HOMOPHOBIC as well then.

Obama i COMMAND you to name someone else as SECRETARY of STATE, i demand you to.
  • coolcatdaddy · 1 year ago
Many progressives voted for Nader in Bush v Gore because of the Clinton administration's "conservative in donkey clothing" policies.

I guess the Dems are wanting to offend the left and get Gingrich or Palin in four years.
  • jt307 · 1 year ago
His comments shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. This is a fundamental belief that Evangelicals are permitted to get away with having. Their belief system states that Israel must be destroyed and the Jews converted to Christians in order for Jesus to return and then they will be welcomed into their "kingdom of heaven". This is FUNDAMENTAL to them. What is surprising is that more people don't call them on it, that more people don't point at them and say what they are.

Thanks for the effort you guys on this site are putting in on this one. While I am not LGBT, my wife and I are expecting our first child and we have no idea what he or she will become when they mature, hopefully, with vigilance, and people keeping the conversation/fight going they can become straight, gay, lesbian, atheist, or a combination of a few of these in a country where some bigoted schmuck isn't given a national stage, by a supposed transformational leader, in order to strengthen his brand of hate.

  • wearing out my F key · 1 year ago
one of the reasons bush was such a failure as a president was his unwillingness to entertain any and all views that conflicted with his own.

obama doesn't agree with warren on seveal points, but they do agree on others, and instead of focusing on the differences, obama focuses on the common ground. and that's a great improvement in my opinion.
  • Gridlock · 1 year ago
Again, you do not entertain racists, or anti-semites, or bigots. You crush them.

Anti gay bigotry is not more acceptable. It is NOT a valid 'viewpoint' any more than some Klansman's rantings are.

It is NOT to be invited to the table.
  • Gooner · 1 year ago
Wait, I thought it was African-Americans who got Prop 8 to pass? No? Okay, then it was the Mormons who got Prop 8 to pass, right? No, it was Rick Warren, all by himself?
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
"[T]he real outrage against Rick Warren is his enabling of the patron-saint-state of terrorism, Syria."

I don't think so--it's his hatred of gays.

But, I suppose Warren is okay with the fucking Duggars who just had an 18th kid, and want more. (Why do xtians engage in such excess anyway--you know, like gluttony of all kinds?) Women weren't meant to be just walking wombs, after all. Adopt, for chrissakes if you want to run a children's home.
  • JohnInTexas · 1 year ago
You know, we were discussing something like this last night, about the Christians wanting to do away with abortion and promote adoption....only thing is, the only ones they would want to adopt would be the white healthy babies, the babies born to crack addicts and heroin addicts, and minority babies would all still be considered the leftovers.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
Exactly. Having so many kids is not good for a woman's health, either; I just imagine that uterus has had to be tucked and sewn many times now. Her doctor is irresponsible not to recommend tubal ligation since these people are so reckless. That's what "submissive wives" means--keep 'em barefoot and pregnant and in the kitchen.
  • ahaque · 1 year ago
John, you are beginning to sound like George Bush, axis of evil etc.
  • wearing out my F key · 1 year ago
you know what i like to do? if there's an issue that's near and dear to my heart, i like to see where a candidate stands on that issue before i vote for them. little late in the game now, but just for fun, let's see what we would have found, if we had been paying attention.

" Barack Obama ~ Opposes same-sex marriage, but also opposes a constitutional ban."

"Joe Biden ~ Opposes same-sex marriage."

"John McCain ~ Believes the institution of marriage is a union between one man and one woman."

"Sarah Palin ~ Stated on Sarah Palin for Governor Web site: "I believe that marriage should only be between a man and a woman."

    http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/issues/issues....
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
no. you aren't paying attention. it isn't really about marriage. it is Warren's comparisons of GLBT lives to sub-humans. read up on it.
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
I just received an email from Joe Solomnese at HRC asking members to send a letter to Obama to support HRC's Blueprint for Positive Change (5 points).

Nifty. What's the plan if he DOESN'T support it? Then what? Oh golly gee. Kicked in the ass again!

    Stop groveling.

It should be more like, "Look, we pulled out all the stops for you and you are pulling the rug out from under us. We are NOT fair game. Support our agenda or you are not our friend in the next election".
  • kr · 1 year ago
I'd just like to point out that there's an ad for Rick Warren's book at the top of this page. Nice.
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
What is up with those ads? I've commented b4 that there are ads that seem really contrary to what is trying to be accomplished here. I wondered if they were placed by the website owner or the server owner.

It isdifficult to complain about Obama asking Warren to participate in the Inauguration when you are running ads for Warren's book at the top of your webpage!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • wearing out my F key · 1 year ago
i've noticed that too, but i think those are actually ads put up there by google. it seems like no matter what the subject is, the ads are somehow related. so a post that mentions rick warren and isreal will bring up ads for warren and isreal. just a guess tho.
  • wearing out my F key · 1 year ago
good point... right next to an add for tours of isreal. ha! whether you're for "the destruction of state of Israel and the death of all Jews", or, just looking to visit the holy land at a reasonable price, AMERICAblog has something for everyone.

John, big FAT FAIL, you forget that the jews that care about these religious issues are in bed with the warren types. SORRY TRY AGAIN. LOL.

Please, look for how to connect this with slavery or death of babies or something, that may work.

let me see if i can help you out, let's see.... YES warren is in love with syria, syria likes iran, iran has nuclear weapons, they are going to blow up israel with them, hence KILLING the jewish babies and the black families who went there for vacation.

so, in conclusion, Obama is a jewis- baby-killing, black-killing president-elect, i say IMPEACH.

Huh? Jewish-Americans who I know care a lot about Israel, don't care very much for Syria, and would have a problem with someone who thinks Syria is a moderate country. That has nothing to do with religion.
  • cmpnwtr · 1 year ago
Actually this is a plus for Rick Warren. He's not taking the usual Christo-Zionist position of demonizing Arab states that the fundies like Hagee and the rest are doing. Aravosis is playing a stupid game here, trying to turn Jewish voters against Obama because of the Rick Warren pick.
So John, is this what you are going to do for the next 8 years, be a one issue blog, and rail against Obama because of Rick Warren?

"Though maintaining traditional evangelical positions on issues such as abortion and gay marriage, Warren has challenged the conservative views of many evangelical leaders by devoting less attention to these issues and instead calling on the church to focus its efforts on fighting international poverty and disease, expanding educational opportunity for the marginalized, and combatting global warming. He has thus worked to promote an evangelical movement that is more centrist rather than wedded to the Republican Party. "

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Warren

this guy has to be stopped.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
Absolutely. Mainly for equating gays and lesbians to child molesters, polygamists and incestuous people.
  • TampaZeke · 1 year ago
So why then did he devote so much time, money and influence to the Prop 8 fight? Why does he NEVER fail to make some anti-gay comment whenever he is being interviewed for television or radio? Why does he promote Republican candidates in every way he can that won't jeopardize his IRS status?

Do you believe everything you read on Wikipedia? Do you realize that ANYONE can edit ANY entry on Wiki with just the click of a mouse.

If that's where you get your information then your either too lazy or too stupid to even be in a debate such as this.

Why would anyone listen to something that comes straight from Debbie Schlussel, a right-wing, anti-gay hate mongering bigot on a "left-wing" website? What's next? Articles from NewsMax and WorldNetDaily?

Here's something Debbie Schlussel posted about gay people:

"As you've probably heard by now, today is the "Day Without Gay," on which gays are encouraged by gay activists to "call in gay" and not show up to work or buy lattes, so that we will see how the world would allegedly collapse without the Liberaces, George Michaels, Clay Aikens, male hairstylists and stewardesses, er . . . flight attendants of the world. Oh, and a day without attacks on Mormon churches."

    http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/2008/12...

And this is the person you rely on to inform you?
  • Kevin · 1 year ago
Here's Debbie Schlussel "review" of Milk:

    * "Milk": Timing is everything, and I doubt it's a coincidence that Hollywood--without knowing the election outcome--chose a few weeks after the election on California's Proposition 8, to release this very heavy-handed gay rights propaganda flick.

To say this movie is "flamboyant" would be the understatement of the year. Watching Sean Penn kiss anyone (or the ass of Iran's Ahmadinejad and Venezuela's Chavez) is bad enough. But watching him make out with and have sex with James Franco turned my stomach. Bleccccchhhhh to the nth.

It's the story of how Harvey Milk--a gay activist from New York--became the first openly gay man elected as a San Francisco Supervisor (akin to a City Councilman). He's shot to death by fellow Supervisor Dan White (Josh Brolin), whom the movie unfairly implies was a closeted gay--despite no evidence and the fact that Wilson is not alive to disavow that description.

Unrelated to gay issues, White assassinated Milk and was the first to successfully plead the insanity defense now known as the "Twinkie Defense." Frankly, the trial and that defense would have made for a more interesting movie. White committed suicide not long after he was released from prison, and it is believed he had Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from serving in Vietnam--an aspect completely skipped by the movie.

Conservatives and others who oppose the militant gay agenda (including Anita Bryant) were portrayed as bigots and extremists. But, in fact, most of America--while having no problem with gays doing what they want in their own homes and bedrooms--doesn't like this agenda being shoved in their faces and--pardon the phrase--shoved down their throats. We know it's not about equal rights. It's about their right to impose upon us. That's the part they don't show you in this movie.

Other than being incredibly one-sided, this was way too long and boring and far too many scenes of Di-Fi (Dianne Feinstein). The movie was two hours and had like a gazillion endings. It could have been done in 1.5 hours, or--as far as I'm concerned--zero hours.

Appeals to the Elton Johns and Clay Aikens of the world far more than it did to me. The ghost of Liberace is applauding.

I bet she can't even see the absurd irony of her statement. "Conservatives and others who oppose the MILITANT GAY AGENDA (including Anita Bryant) were portrayed as bigots and EXTREMISTS..."

So it's not OK gay people to think of a people who work tirelessly to deny them their civil rights as bigoted and extremists but it's perfectly OK and reasonable for people who oppose gay rights to refer to them as "radicals pushing a militant gay agenda"? But THAT wouldn't be portraying anyone as "extremists" now would it?

Yet another case of illogical logic to add to the list.

A-blog linking to Debbie Schlussel now??? Debbie's been smearing Obama as a jihadist Arab for over a year now. Both Debbie Schlussel and Rick Warren belong in a cone of ignorance together. Let's not forget that Warren covered for McCain during that Saddleback forum, giving McCain the opportunity to hear the answers in advance, so McCrazy could appear to be somewhat knowledgeable about religion. I really don't understand why ANY religious person is invited to speak at a secular swearing in ceremony. It's a mockery of the separation of church and state. Oh well, who cares because we all know that these religious creeps are hypocrites anyway and sold out to you know who....

Thanks Obama. You really don't care that much about us after all. Instead of planning a happy occasion on inauguration day I will be protesting on behalf of my gay friends and all other victims of these brokeback-type homophobic screwballs. I have a sick, sick, sick feeling about you now.

You have catapulted us back into the fighting and stress we have been saddled with during the Bush administration for 8 years (while you were doing what?). WE are so sick of this.

I won't abandon my GLBT friends this time or any other time. Our humanity is measured by how we care for the weakest and downtrodden of us. That's paraphrased from the bible, which you are apparently also unfamiliar with.

In the Judeo-Christian-Muslim religion heritage, the prophets came to reform people like the Brokeback pastor, for their exclusion of others, not to endorse them.

You are not worthy to sit in Reverend Wrights church. Go worship with the nutjobs where you apparently belong, which I am sure you will. You don't belong with true Christians anymore. I can't believe you can raise your kids this way.

Hi Steve. First, I am happy to read your comments acknowledging gay preachers; as a Child of God, who is also gay, I am faithful to His message of Love and appreciate preachers who are also gay.

However, get over it? Get over what?

Per your comments, "more Christians than gays" I would ask how do you know this fact? Where is your proof? Regardless, great one ... One could argue there are more abortions performed in America alone than there are gays.

For what it is worth, gays are not facilitating abortions, pre-marital sex, genocide in Darfur, and I could go on to list a countless amount of realities or right-wing perceived wrong-doing/sin committed by the majority (e.g. far more than by us proud gays that exist) committed consistently, world wide on a daily basis by proud straight men not unlike you perhaps.

It was a difficult decision for Stonewall democrats in California to support Obama wholeheartedly; but we did! And, he has betrayed us via Rick Warren. Something not easily forgotten.

As a Christian, a democrat, and a PROUD gay AMERICAN I can/will not witness the inauguration of a President of the United States of America involved with an intolerant man who claims to practice the teachings of my Savior, who is Jesus Christ. (Regardless of Rick Warren's commercial massive monetary success.)

And no one, Steve, can take Jesus from me or the rest of us "proud" gays. To the current day scribes and pharisees I emphatically express the words of Christ, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

By the way, please brush yourself up on what you and me are commanded to do, which is to love one another.

Interesting. You wish to quote from the Bible but yet you GLBT supporters refuse to acknowledge what the Bible says about them and that the way they live is sin. Easier for you to call us homophobes and haters than to believe the truth. As for Rick Warren, he is quite ignorant on multiple issues as is Obama but it is God's place to judge them both.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
Warren is a Paulist, for sure. As I mentioned before, his book for the masses quotes Paul extensively. He's obsessed with the misogynist/homophobe Paul. No wonder Warren's a freak about both.
  • mrtodd · 1 year ago
John, Rick Warren is an ignorant, gay-hating douchebag. I just watched the Ann Murray interview, ugh. Ok, that's out of the way...

But when he says 'moderate country' he's clearly talking only in terms of freedom of religion between Muslims and Christians. This is more or less accurate if you consider its neighborhood, and hardly controversial. If you want to dispute it and say Warren didn't say much about Syria's foreign policy of supporting radicals in Lebanon and Palestine, or that he probably doesn't know what happened at Hama in 1982, then fine, that's legitimate.

But to run with this and say he's doing "propaganda for Israel-hating terror states"? Cmon, really?

If i say "Hamas has good social programs." I said it, therefore I'm a Hamas enabler and I probably hate Israel too. Context or whether its true doesn't matter.

Plucking sentences out of context from an already short sound clip and inferring meaning that isnt there is the job of rightwing blogs.

Just because someone opposes a certain lifestyle, in this case the gay one, it does not mean the person hates gays. Some of you need to get over yourself with all the self-pity and insecurity.

Jesus Christ certainly did not have anything but love for people but would also likely be labeled a gay-hating douchebag by the majority today. If sex is more important that your eternal soul, whether you are homosexual or heterosexual then so be it, but don't try to blame that on any but YOURSELF.
  • CurbStomper · 1 year ago
"If sex is more important that your eternal soul, whether you are homosexual or heterosexual then so be it..."

Umm, not sure what your trying to say here? Are you suggesting that the best solution here is for no one to have any sex of any kind, because doing so will destroy or taint your "eternal soul"? Don't know what your beliefs are but thats a straight ticket to extinction of a species...if thats the case, you might as well end yourself now that way you can save the rest of humanity from listening to your drivel.

If thats not what you meant I will assume you meant that the statement only applied to gays, even though you clearly said "homosexual or heterosexual". In that case what you're saying is that it is ok to be homosexual as long as you don't have sex with another person of the same sex. You can wine, dine, date, kiss, make out, mess around...etc as long as you don't fornicate?

Or just to be safe, even if you can't help but be gay...do your best to lie about your orientation, go on living the life of a straight person and then come out of the closet after you've had kids and are married...and leave your life and the lives of your family in shambles.

Yeah saving your soul is more important than being truthful and having some integrity for yourself...In my opinion if you don't have that, you probably don't have much of a soul left anyway.

Seriously, You need to get over YOURSELF and your brainwashing.

The Jewish state of Israel is a terrorist state. It has defied the UN re: Palestine and offered only the flimsiest of 'anti-terror' alibis even as the Palestinians are massacred. Many Jews would like us to forget that far many more Palestinians have died at the hands of Israel than vice versa. Even Albert Einstein -- who was asked to be the second president of Israel in the 50's but declined -- warned back in the late 40's that Israel co-existing without the concurrent establishment of the Palestinian state would result in utter chaos, bloodshed and -- he predicted -- the failure of the state of Israel. They didn't call Albert a genius for nothing. Israel is a sham state just like W's Amerikkka. It was the Neo Con Jewish Power Leaders like Wolfowitz and the rest who got us into Iraq because of their rabid pro-Israeli views. I ask as an American, not a Jewish or Palestinian American: why should we support Israel as a non-legitimate state? Unquestioningly? It makes no sense unless you're a) Jewish or b) End of The World Christian. Neither is accpetable logic as both are theocratic impositions to what should be governmental solutions. Oy veh!

Iran treats its Jewish community well, as they themselves attest. Israel is terribly racist towards Sephardics and Ethiopian Jews. the irony is that the Sephardics are the ones with real roots in Palestine, and their racist overlords are the Khazar converts from central Europe/Eurasia. Judaism is supposed to be a religion, so Given that Israel is a State based on religion, then racism within can easily exist. Religion is not, even here, the great unifier its adherents pretend it is.

Ditto for support of Al Qaida and Taliban. As for Jews in Middle East, since Israel is crated there is hardly any left in any other country. Now,. you can go and campaign for carpet-nuking of whole Middle east if you wish....

    To Bret,
When you were in seminary, it seemed you enjoyed your time by doing research collecting dark side in the history of Christianity and compelling it into a prejudicial conclusion. Thus, throw the basin water away together with the baby, hei ??? You really tell us to remember that Christianity was spread by blood sheet ? There must be some thing wrong with people like you who like to put Christian faith as Scapegoat ! People like you always cling on bad side of Christianity, stick it in your mind and think that it is a kind of bad religion who always win its population by force.

Doesn't it ever occur to your mind that in other places on earth Christianity spreads in tears, sufferings and by blood of their own people...not other people. It is not easy at all to be Christian ! In your country, maybe Christian only endures the mockery from people like you who enjoy to speak about the bad side of the religion. In other places, Christian often risk their life by spreading the news especially to those who are in need of great hope for deliverance for a meaningful life....they risk their life the same as how Christianity was spread at the first time in the land of Israel then to Rome. I do not think people like you understand that any person has a right to get access to know the whole of Christianity whatever their religious back ground of their family or ethnic was.

When the Bible says there is no peace until the return of the Messiah does not mean that the Bible tells the followers to do evil things so that there is no peace. The phrase is a "foresee". The "no peace" condition does not have anything to do with the existence of the Bible or Christianity. Some people are given ability to see things happen in the future without influencing for the outcome.

O...one more thing, nobody is forced to be Christian. Even some people join Christianity for wrong reason, ie : financial support by other church members, political support, etc. ...usually these people will leave once they fill they have enough getting what they want....and some even stab back when they fill unsatisfied.

Ever went to seminary to become a priest does not mean you know more.
