AMERICAblog: CA changes wording of state constitutional amendment revoking marriages of gay couples

GREAT to hear of the rephrasing. As a Cali resident, I find it madding when it comes time to vote for ammendments and bond issues. It seems that the RIGHT always screws with the language to make it almost impossible to figure out what the ballot actually says; if I vote NO am I voting against same sex marriage or voting against the amendment to BAN same sex marriage.
Good to hear that the state folk finally are catching on (but I won't hold my breath).

It's the Attorney General's office who is responsible for this great editorial job. I think it's based on what he believes is right, and he also wants to run for Governor---again.

He's correct and it's about time the bigot fundies were taken on with their Orwellian language.

Their preachers tell their flock to vote yes even though it means no or vice versa. Always scrapes them up alot of votes from voters who would be against the reich.

For folks so enamored by the 10 Commandments, fundys sure have trouble with "Thou Shalt Not Lie."
I guess God was just kidding about that one, just like God wasn't really serious about "Thou Shalt Not Kill."

Hey, John. My partner (husband in CA, NY, and MA) sent me this on a blog yesterday but I hadn't been able to confirm it. Thanks for posting this. Are the fundies having the expected FIT over the new wording?

Republicans can NEVER win on a 'level playing field'. They had to rig the last two presidential elections, for example. And this is exactly the plan of the Thou Shalt Not Lie so-called christians, lie to trick the People into giving them what they want.
Typical Republicans, violate everything they stand for to get their way...

They justify their sneakiness since the early christianists were sneaking around plotting underground in the catacombs under Rome and then burning Rome down and blaming it on Nero. That gave christianity the power.

I believe the re-phrasing speaks of taking away rights. I don't think it speaks of nullifying the marriages that are happening right now, because legally, it can't---in the opinion of lots of attorneys. And I hope they are right. My partner of 36 years and I will be married in three weeks, and we plan that it will be a permanent deal. Any of those knuckle-draggers tries to take it away, they'll have a couple of old ladies to contend with---among an army of others.

I love it. I can't find an entire copy of the new wording, but I hope the State makes clear how much this Amendment affects straight people as well (adoption, living together, et al).

The only thing changed is the State's description of the Amendment, nothing in the Amendment itself. The State clearly doesn't want this to pass, though. Still, the description doesn't do justice to the depth of the effects the Amendment could have on even straight people as the Amendment would outlaw even the Domestic Partnerships currently allowed.

This is how it reads from Equality California: Proposition 8 ELIMINATES RIGHT OF SAME-SEX COUPLES TO MARRY. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
Changes California Constitution to eliminate right of same-sex couples to marry. Provides that only a marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.
Fiscal Impact: Over the next few years, potential revenue loss, mainly sales taxes, totaling in the several tens of millions of dollars, to state and local governments. In the long run, likely little fiscal impact to state and local governments.

"it takes marriages away from people that already have them" + "it will cost us money" = buh-bye amendment
Good to hear that the state folk finally are catching on (but I won't hold my breath).
