John, do you know if there are any groups that are working to inform California voters of the importance of keeping this landmark ruling alive (maybe you covered this already and I missed it)? We can not let intolerance and hate reverse this decision. I would donate money to that cause.

The group that has been at the center of this issue in Calfornia for years has been "Equality California". Just ask around. They are the best of the best as far as organization and focused tactics. I have nothing to do with them except as being a supportive donor for years.

    Bless you!
Equality California, PFLAG and MECA USA.
    They have websites.

Equality California. They are the lead group on this. They are leading a vast coalition of advocacy, legal, labor and religious organizations to fight the amendment. McCain will play a big role in depressing repug turnout while Obama will help bring out younger voters. This is the year we win.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to get a partner who is claustrophobic and airplanephobic on a plane so I can get legally married in CA and push some boundaries in MN?

I welcome all comments...and I fly all the time while he takes care of the house.

    AND...I love him dearly

    Take Amtrak.

Rent a convertible and take a road trip. Take I-35 south to I-80 W. It could take a few days, if you decide to stop. It will take you right to SF. You can take the train via Oregon as well. Good luck and best wishes!

As long as I don't have to get married, I don't care who else does it.

I am SO with you on this :)

My partner and I will be married in August and that means they can't take the marriage away from us even if the damned initiative passes. But, I think it won't.

YAY!!! Good on the justices!!! Since the original ruling last month, I'm very proud that CA is my home state, and even more so now (although I haven't lived there for 25 years)

"You'd think that when it comes to an issue as fundamental as a person's right to marry the partner of his or her choice, mass movements and broad coalitions would be at work, pushing the debate. Actually, the opposite is true. Protect Marriage, the organization seeking to overturn the recent decision by the California Supreme Court, presented the secretary of state with a petition bearing 1.1 million signatures -- and yet it is hardly a mass movement. California allows professional contractors that pay people to gather signatures for political measures, so anyone with enough money to spend can get an initiative on the ballot."

The Contract Clause of the US Constitution prohibits states from enacting any law that retroactively impairs contract rights. The Contract Clause applies only to state legislation, not court decisions. If couples enter into marriage contracts that are legal at the time, they cannot be made null and void by subsequent state legislation. Remember that Gavin Newsom's marriages were never legal at the time. This time it's different. Read Article 1, section 10, clause 1: "No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility." States are specifically prohibited from passing an ex post facto law or a law impairing the obligation of a contract. The End. :-)

This straight, white male in Texas is getting such a Schadenfreude-filled kick out of watching the knuckledraggers heads explode with rage.

That the fucktards who claim they're all about "family values" can't do anything about this ruling makes it even sweeter.

You pay your fair share of taxes, you should get your fair share of rights.

In anticipation of the first ruling the legalized same-sex marriage, God created a drought in California. He learned about 'pre-emptive strikes' from Bush.

It was a mostly Republican Supreme Court in California that decided that same-sex marriage is legal. It was the Republican Chief Justice (Ronald George) who wrote the decision. It was the Republican Governor who said that he supports the decision and is against the ballot measure to ban same-sex marriage.

The conservatives are going to have a problem with this type of Republican support.

Maybe it is the 'SF' to which people object.
