AMERICAblog: Caroline Kennedy for U.S. Senator from New York?

  • tlsintx · 11 months ago
    yes, please!

i'm not sure why I adore her like i do. will have to investigate...
  • EmGD · 11 months ago
She never struck me as someone who wanted to run for office and get bogged down in the constant campaigning. I wonder if this is a "finish out the term" safe pick kind of thing or a she gets it and runs to keep it every six years type of thing.

I'm getting really sick of political dynasties. Nothing personal against Caroline, it's simply undemocratic. Is there really nobody in the state of New York who is qualified to be senator who isn't named Kennedy or Clinton?
  • HereinDC · 11 months ago
The Kennedy "Dynasties" is NO WHERE near and shouldn't be compared or put on the same level as the Clinton "Dynasties"

    1992 to 2008 is NOT A Dynasty.
  • truebluecoondog · 11 months ago
I agree with HereinDC. Kennedys have proven to be champions of the average American, pushing for solutions benefiting the common good and, generally, an inspiration to the people. NOTHING at ALL like the Clintons or Bushies.

My point was that being related to an elected official should not be a qualification for holding elected office oneself (notice that one of the other names Joe mentioned in the original post is Cuomo). I readily admit that the Kennedy family has done wonderful things for working families in this country, and I believe that Caroline would work toward that end as well. That doesn't mean that aren't plenty of other people in the state of New York who would also tirelessly advocate for the lower and middle classes. I just think that filling our elected positions with members of a few prominent families is aristocratic and undemocratic, no matter how progressive those families are.

Glenn Greenwald wrote about this a few days ago.

I don't want to see Caroline enter public life but I admit that she'd make an excellent senator from New York. It's her call.
  • Monrob · 11 months ago
God Obama is paying back her endorsement.
  • RevDrBillyBob · 11 months ago
Reid would never be OK with such a selection UNLESS she agreed to be a wimp, like him, Schumer, Pelosi in the House, et. al. . ... and the crypto-Bushishtas commenting here fool no one with their feigned "concern" about "the Kennedy Dynasty".

Just so everyone know there is a large part of the state outside of New York City. go with slaughter.
  • cmpnwtr · 11 months ago
Love it! Caroline Kennedy would have instant clout! The Kennedys are an aristocracy that have their heart in the right place. They have been steady allies on the side of peace and justice.
  • Glenn · 11 months ago
Ugh. More nepotism. More dynasties. Just what we need! The idea that Caroline Kennedy is the best-qualified to be Senator here is just ludicrous.

What a wonderful thing it would be to have another competent woman in the halls of power. CKS has always been a bright, classy, unprepossessing lady. I have no doubt she'd do very much right by her constituents and be widely respected.

    Suck on THAT, Caribou Barbie!

Will "Sweet Caroline" actually be a strong progressive politician? Her resume & obviously her name suggests it, but without actual civil service and an election I don't see whether she's got the kind of dedication required to lead the fight in the Senate. Dynastic privilege is certainly the opposite of how I'd like to see the Senate choose its leaders...

An appointment might not be a bad thing here. If she's bold & effective after gaining some experience, we can support her for reelection. If not, she's not a bad placeholder for whoever emerges as the strongest candidate.

Just need to be sure that if she's a weak Senator, she gets some strong primary opponents.
  • Obamalover · 11 months ago
This is perfect then in 8 years she can run against Billary.
  • Buffalopundit · 11 months ago
Given that the state senate just screwed over western New York big time, it would be fitting that the Senator to replace Clinton be from upstate generally, but the Buffalo area more specifically.
  • antarctica · 11 months ago
This actually doesn't surprise me - she has been been more vocal these past few years then she ever was (politically-wise).

Also, don't forget that this was the seat that John Jr. was considering running for in 2000 before he died in 1999. Maybe Caroline is trying to honor her brother's memory?

Personally, if chosen I think she would be a solid choice.

I don't think Caroline Kennedy has ever held elective office, has she? Sure, the Kennedy name has cache, but that doesn't mean that they should automatically run for office. No record? Taking a chance, I'd say. Let her start at the bottom, like so many others have done.

If only Bella Abzug were still around. She would really kick a$$!

Is it just me, or am I the only fan of Louise Slaughter? I know I’m just a lowly constituent from blood red Oklahoma, but Louise has fought Bush tooth and nail from day one and has seemed to have paid her dues. Slaughter has always been at the forefront of the progressive fight, and let the other members get irritated at the governor. Its his call, right?

As a veteran, I know she comes from a military background and would represent the veterans of her state very well. She is tough, fair and doesn’t take any crap from Republicans. I’m ready for congresswoman Louise Slaughter to get a more high profile position! That said, I personally love Caroline Kennedy… who doesn’t?

It depends. The Kennedy's are really nothing but rapists, murderers (Ted Drunkennedy), or alcoholics/drug addicts.

It's rather the NY Gov chooses someone at random from the phone book. He/She could do no worse that The Hildabeast.

I heard Caroline speak just a few days before the election. She appeared to be a little worn out from the campaign, which is to be expected, but still gave a great speech. I think she'd make a great Senator, but I'm still unsure about how I'd feel in regards to her appointment to the Senate.

I personally looked at Caroline and Ted Kennedy's endorsement of Obama as a symbolic passing of the torch to a new generation of change. As much as I was inspired by the speech I heard her give and truly believe she'd work for the best interests of our country, I wonder if people would simply view her appointment to the Senate as clinging onto the past and a continuation of the old guard.

although Caroline Kennedy would be a good choice i would rather see someone like Slaughter be chosen...New York city dominates our state's politics and those of us who live elsewhere in the state are very much neglected. I'm a resident of Buffalo (the 2nd poorest city in the nation), and we only seem to matter when the politicians need our votes. please! let Patterson chose somebody from upstate! This entire region is dying and the democratic leadership is worried that any pick from western new york won't have the political clout to hold onto the seat in 2010. Well we can't wait till 2010! i just hope that whomever he chooses realizes that there is a vast area of this state that is desperate for representation in washington.
  • llizaerd · 11 months ago
Why not load the whole government with incompetent people? She'd be a perfect match with the inexperienced, unqualified Obama.

Enough with the incompetent Kennedy's. Basta !!! Finito !!
Don't we have competent people in this state ??? I will never vote Democrat again !! What a bunch of freeloaders who cannot even solve the GM,F and Chrysler problem.
The only think they know is throwing good money after bad one. And you think that Caroline Kennedy ( ex wife from Cuomo Jr.) has the political skill ?? The knowledge ??
The attributes ?? The acceptance from the New Yorkers ( nobody cares about them ! ) ??
The only think she has is the name ............name ! Will somebody please wake up !!!???
