AMERICAblog: CBS edits McCain gaffe from interview, provides fake answer for viewers to cover for McCain

  • FunMe · 1 year ago
There is no MSM (main stream media).

    TV Journalism no longer exists.

These corporate clowns simply spill out neoCON/Government PROPAGANDA lies.
  • Rufus · 1 year ago
Perhaps someone might ask Katie WTF? Of course, she will blame it on an intern.
  • Webster · 1 year ago
Quiet! Katie has been promised that if she gets McCain elected she gets to be the new Republicanairhead Press Secretary! She's desperate to line up a new gig--don't give her secrets away. Hush, now.
  • usagi · 1 year ago
I asked in seriousness a while back and never got an answer: What happens if McCain keels over before the convention (and, alternately, after the convention but before the election)? Yeah, he's looked pretty bad for a while.
  • calewis · 1 year ago
If that happens the party leaders will select a new candidate. No need for a new primary or anything. look at all the possible press coverage and lack of vetting. I expect that will happen as McCain will drop from the race for health reasons. Love the system.........

how did MSNBC get the unedited tape? are we sure it's unedited? maybe the dude croaked in the studio. how would we know?

From your lips to the goddesses' ears.
  • Slim Cognito · 1 year ago
The correct transcript is up at CBS.com, see the link at Think Progress. The edited version only went out on CBS.

I'm absolutely shocked that CBS would cover his ass like that.
  • PeteWa · 1 year ago
If that shocks you, you haven't been paying attention.
    For the last eight years.
  • Slim Cognito · 1 year ago
Hey, we've got some talented video people. Using "CBS Interview Rules" maybe we should cut and paste together some other interviews of McCain, Bush, Cheney . . .
  • Verchiel · 1 year ago
Johnnie Mac is so "serious about foreign policy" that now they're not only explaining away his lies/errors, they're disappearing them from broadcast--and in favor of a shot against Obama, to boot.

    Pathetic.

What happened to the good old fashioned concept of just reporting the facts and let the the recipient of the facts apply the spin? MSNBC seems to be as much for Obama as CBS is for McCain. Oh, I know. Bill Clinton brought us the end of fair news broadcasting when he signed the Telecommunications Act of1996, allowing companies to create virutal monopolies in broadcast media, thus giving government more control over content (fewer companies in control of the media allows the guvment to keep them in line with its agenda because the companies have much more to lose if they disobey and the guvment has fewer entities to oversee).
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
huh? 'guvment ' had them in line a little more before the pro-corporate, neo-liberal disaster named clinton. We need to somehow foster a real press and the fairness doctrine might be part of that. The money has to come out and integrity in.
  • ClassAct · 1 year ago
There was a much better press before Clinton. News spin is easily controlled by government factions now because of threats from FCC if they don't cooperate. With fewer players in the media controlling more media venues, guvment has more power to control the press. The press becomes beholden to the guvment and is no longer the watchdog for the "people" over the guvment.
  • SoLeftImRight · 1 year ago
Wait, I simply don't understand what is going on at CBS. Shouldn't this be a firing offense for Katie? Or at least whatever editor was responsible for editing an interview to remove the answer to a question and replacing it with another? I think back the the Dan Rather debacle with Shrub's bullsh*t military service, and isn't this at least as bad?

"The aide said that guys like me were 'in what we call the reality-based community,' which he defined as people who 'believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.' I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. 'That's not the way the world really works anymore,' he continued. 'We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.'

That should be on a plaque in front of the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

I have to give Katie and CBS the "Golden Turkey Award" for outdong last nights ABC Nightline in covering for McSame in the clunkiest way imaineable. The MSM has been thoroughly intimidated by the Repubes and their pitbulls in the media, who launched pre-emptive attacks on media favoritism in covering Obama's overseas tour. Because they've been rendered so "Nutless" the MSM has reosrted to either editting out McSame's inanities or to adding bizzarely hysterical statements from the McSame campaign into coverage of Obama's day in Iraq. Terry Moran and ABC did the latter and it came across as highly discordant with the favorable impression that our eyes, ears and minds percieved from the rest of the report.. Moran's interview, of course, was another exericse in inanity. His questions were pitched from a perspective that McSame has the right position and that Obama must explain why he is so wrong. But that was easy to ignore in all its utter craveness to project forward Village groupthink.

Moran has been reduced to a court eunach, and Couric, to somethiang more base and corrupt than that.

WILL THE MEDIA'S BIASED LOVE AFFAIR WITH OBAMA NEVER END?!?!

    Oh... wait...
  • KISSman · 1 year ago
I don't outrage easily, but I find this to be totally outrageous.

What happened here proves that CBS is not interested in reporting the news, but CREATING the news. If they can do this with this interview, how are we to believe that they don't do the same in other interviews that they do? I would expect this kind of thing from FOX because they have no journalistic ethics, but CBS?? If this wasn't an effort to protect McCain, then what other reason could possibly exist??

Imagine if NBC or MSNBC did such a thing with an Obama interview. The Right would lose their minds over such an incident! It would only feed into their narritive about how the media is so in-love with Obama, yadda, yadda, yadda...

When you boil it down, CBS broadcasted a fictional interview because that exchange never actually happened. Jay Leno does this kind of thing on the Tonight Show, but at least there you know it's fake. CBS tried to pass this off as actual 'news'.

What kind of respectable news organization does this kind of thing??
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
I could be wrong, but I think CBS News is so f*ckin' stupid that they didn't even know McCain had no clue what he was talking about, and they accidentally edited his screwup out.

    We'll know for sure tonight:

If they run a correction, they probably screwed up out of typical corporate media ignorance; they don't, and they're even more in the bag for McCain than I thought they were.

(Thank God for K.O. and Jed Report)
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Looks like Obama's Team is calling McCain on it, and AP's picking it up.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080723/ap_on_el_pr...

McCain's Thugs are using the "Obama's criticizing the troops" ploy in response.

On the bright side, Katie just earned herself a second helping of slaw at the next barbecue and 30 minutes of access to the VIP section of the Air Convalescence Express.
  • canuck55 · 1 year ago
Dan Rather got the boot from CBS for reporting the truth about Bush and Katie will probably get a medal for covering for Abe Simpson McCain.
  • Slim Cognito · 1 year ago
Abe Simpson McCain. That's the best one yet!!! I'll be using that from now on.
  • TomJoad · 1 year ago
I've said it a few times in the last few months. I think the GOP is going to pull a bait and switch. That McCain was never intended to go the distance. That at some point in the near future he is going to "bow out" and suddenly some new wonder-boy is going to come in. They have no one I can think of but think of some of the other aspirants to be the GOP candidate...some of those guys would obviously do better than McCain.

Or maybe someone we haven't thought of. Suddenly has the new-car smell, maybe even time it so there is no time for debates. Hell, at this point, I think they could put up a slurpee machine as their candidate and get more votes than McCain would have.

What have they got to lose? Mc Cain is making gaffe after gaffe...and MAN, if Obama gets him in a debate, I think the old man is going to lose it, literally, figuratively, and temper-wise. He'll start going off on Czechoslovakia, and the Iraq-Pakistan border and it'll be all over when Obama points out (gently, because he is also a kind man) that those places only exist in Mc Cains fuddled mind....

No, my pretties....Mc Cain is NOT the GOP candidate. They wouldn't make it THIS easy, you ought to know that by now.
  • eebanks · 1 year ago
It will most likely be Mitt Romney. They will need a smooth talker and, despite the "problem" with his religious ties, he has the ability to perform fantastic snow jobs on the voting public. With the Cheney cabal behind him, he can't lose.
I heard a man on the radio (unfortunately can't remember his name) put forth a scenario similar to yours; that McCain would drop out and Romney would step in and beat Obama. There are too many people in this country who are filled with ugly hate for the Obamas and would vote for the empty-headed, self-congratulating, useless former Governor of Massachusetts. I cannot believe the vitriol I hear coming from "news" programs when they talk about Obama. It's scary.
  • Slim Cognito · 1 year ago
A while back I'd have disagreed with you but McCain will never make it thru a debate wtih Obama at this rate. My other theory is they're throwing a bone at McCain knowing the GOP is screwed this election and plan to come back with a vengence in 2012.

CBS is clearly in the tank for McCain, witness their continuous critical tone of Obama and fulsome praise of McCain. Interestingly, at least some of their affiliates are playing along. WBZ, the CBS affiliate in Boston, has been pointedly critical and skeptical of Obama while bathing McCain in a soft, rosy glow. This week, they're pushing the news media is unfair to McCain theme.

I wonder if anybody else has noticed a similar trend with their local CBS affiliates?

cbs is just trying to play the game established by cable news.

how else are they going to get a seat on the mcplane?

Unfortunately for McCain, there will be demands for live encounters with Obama and then he will appear conspicuously as the blathering confused fool he is progressively becoming.

McCain is consistently devoid of command over basic factual information. He can't hide this forever.

Total manipulation of the news... Sad. I bet Walter Cronkite is having palpatations. This never would have happened on his watch. As CBS has seen it justifiable to cover for John McCain, it's time for honest Americans to show them what we think of their network. Stop watching their shows. Americans stopped watching their news in droves when Katie Couric was tapped to sit in "the chair". Now both the company and the newsreader have soiled themselves... Will they repent? No way... They are nothing more than corporate mouthpieces -- no ethics. No morals. No audience. D.

No possible excuse for CBS and Katie . . . An open, honest apology needs to be made by Katie ( not blame her helper) for making the correction to protect a candidate of Station choice. This is so inexcuably WRONG and purposely intended.
  • CharlesDarwin · 1 year ago
I cannot believe these kind of things are happening in the USA. If there was no control on the media, I would say it was a good (but evil) idea to blatantly manipulate the people (it works, history has shown us that). But in the information age, where everything you say and do as a candidate will be public knowledge in a matter of minutes (thanks, Internet), this tactic seems pointless.

What I don't understand is why the American public is putting up with all this? And please tell me, if you know, WHY are the US news stations doing this? How do they benefit? Will they make more money by supporting a particular candidate (Obama or McCain, it doesn't matter)?

It's obvious that this is not the way things should be. In my opinion, this presidential election is the perfect catalyst to root out those bad elements. The American people should demand for the return (or rise, I really don't know much about the history of the media in the states) of independent news sources! When lies are so clearly seen by all, why not change it?
