What was with McCain's "Good Humor Man" tie, anyway?

McCain was a notch better that Bob Dole in 1996
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
There was a moment, early on when McCranky clutched a pen in his one robotic hand, when Johnny seemed very Dole-like...

When is the Joe v Sarah debate? I want to keep that night free. I love tragedy and comedy equally.
  • BorninUSA · 1 year ago
If I was a betting person I would bet the farm that tomorrow morning on Morning Joe they will all give McCain a win.

McCain is a sad, old man. He is fighting for his life and will do anything and everything to win. Lie, cheat and smirk and sneer. Where was his flag pin??? Not that I think it is important but the repugs always made such a big thing about wearing one.

BTW Does anyone really believe that Palin will show up for the VP debate next week? The Republicans are looking for any excuse to back out of that one.

The polling numbers are pretty conclusively going towards Obama, it's going to be tough to spin it using that. The best open tab I saw that jumped out was the gender line, Obama won women with 58%, McCain won men by 46%. That huge difference with women and minimal difference with men is crucial for Obama and speaks well for his chances. Also, apparently Obama did very well with older people, where you would have expected McCain to dominate.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
    Good, I can post again.
It looks like Obama is the winner. I think people are sick to death of the vitriol of past campaigning.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Mr. Obama was comfortable while McCain seemed straight-pinned into his suit.
And speaking of straight...What's with Johnny's heavy (and kinda creepy) use of the "I didn't win a Miss Congeniality contest" line along with mentioning Miss Lindsey over Cindy Lou (too zonked to notice anyway)?
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
McCain was trying to dispute the 90% voting record with Bush
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
I got that element however the locked-in usage of the drag queen-esque beauty queen line to make that 5% difference seems, considering Johnny's aged alpha dog brutishness, a bit strange. I bet Miss Lindsey finds Johnny's Lou Reed aspects thrilling...

Robinson on Olberman on body language.........McCain looked contemptuous of Obama....didn't look him in the eye.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
He didn't look at Obama once and yet Obama would try to engage Johnnie boy many times. McCain looks OLD, cranky and very, very angry. Not so sure the angry thing worked for him judging from the quick polls...
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
The repeated "he doesn't understand" line was disdainful, contemptuous and subtly race-baited.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
You know, originally I didn't think of it as subtly race baiting, but after thinking about it, I actually tend to agree with you on that.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
McCain was a jerk in his attitude toward Obama....and that's gonna hurt McGramps

I'm not sure Drudge is counting obamas votes ... I voted about an hour ago and the counter never changed, even after i repeatedly refreshed the page

An aside... and maybe not significant... the CNN crew as they were signing off clearly mocked Palin in anticipation of next week 's debate. Referencing he Couric interview... they predicgted she would never do a national interview again. Think she might bow out before Thursday's debate????
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
I think that the McCain campaign will absolutely try to cancel the debate over some sort of phony baloney excuse...it will be great to watch them squirm.

"blah blah blah blah I'm a pompous gasbag who is reading a teleprompter. Blah blah blah my rich, deep voice. I practiced in front of the mirror for 20 years blah blag blah I'm a big gasbag."

"If you have to cut one thing to pay for your big $700 billion bailout for the rich, what will you cut?"

"Blah blah blah I will increase spending on education, and free turkeys for non-existent inner city people who don't exist but end up on the voter rolls voting for me blah blah blah."

"Snicker, snicker ... did you hear that? He was against the surge. I was for the surge. Snicker."

"Now, John, that's not true. I'm a pompous, self-righteous, self-loving windbag who reads teleprompters in my practiced presidential voice. Does it sound presidential? Now don't go off topic, I can't think at all, just read blah blah blah widbag gas gas blah."

"Snicker ... I traveled to afganistan. I wouldn't meet with Askyermomanddad. Snicker. Who would meet with Askyermomanddad? Not kissinger, he was my friend, not yer friend."

"Blah blah blah Americans are addicted to foreign oil and its not good. We need green energy jobs created from the sky, blah blah blah. After my $700 billion welfare payment to the rich, I will cut taxes to 95% of Americans (footnote: as long as they first pay ten times more tax for more giveaways to the rich)"

"Snicker snicker now yer stealing my ideas. I was the one who wants to give $700 billion in welfare to the rich."

"That's not true John, it was my idea to give $700 billion to the rich. Blah blah blah look how presidential I am, I can read teleprompters."

I watched a good chunk of the debate with my 18 yr old son. McCain makes him a little uneasy to say the least. Now, I served my country proudly, and my father did as well. I know my sons would do the right thing if they were asked, but he doesn't want to participate [involuntarily] in McCains percieved adventures in Iraq, Iran and Georgia. McCain=Draft. BTW, he is registered to vote in this election!
  • gwpriester · 1 year ago
Obama had the golden opportunity to nail McCain on the Bridge to Nowhere when McCain was spewing on earmarks. Obama missed too many such opportunities.

McCain was a lot more on his game than he was when he gave his flaccid acceptance speech.

I saw the debate as more of a draw. Obama had some good moments, but so did McCain.

WTF was McWalnuts on about with apparently thinking that Madeleine Albright was still Secretary of State? Did I mis-hear that?

No, you caught that right... at least that's what I heard.... He even resurrected George Schultz as if he were in the government last week...

I just saw Chris Matthews "analysis" of the debate, did he see the same debate as everyone else? He made it sound like Obama did horribly, when at worst I would say it was a draw.

All the polls I have seen show very similar numbers...75-25 for Obama. DRUDGE is showing 70-30 for McCain, but I think he has his own vote fraud scam going on over there.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
I agree with that... tried to vote for Obama, got the "Thanks for voting" popup, but the numbers never changed... even after repeated refreshing...

During the debate, Mr. McCain struggled to separate himself from the deeply unpopular Mr. Bush, saying he opposed the president on global warming and on the conduct of the war in Iraq. But he couldn’t answer Mr. Obama’s charge that he supported Mr. Bush on economic policy, because he generally voted with the administration on budget issues. Mr. McCain long ago abandoned his opposition to Mr. Bush’s tax cuts, which he embraced in order to win the Republican nomination.

When the discussion turned to Iraq, it was profoundly disturbing to see that Mr. McCain seems to have learned nothing from the disastrous war. He talked about progress in Iraq, which is indisputable, and his support for the troop surge that has brought down violence. But Mr. McCain still was talking about winning, rather than how he was going to plan a necessary and responsible exit. And he steadfastly refused to acknowledge that the decision to invade Iraq was an enormous mistake.

Poll on the Peoria Journal Star web page (yes folks, even Peoria has a newspaper!) Vote for Obama there and throw the locals into a frenzy!

Your little Peoria poll has Obama up by better than 60%
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    Voted.

Obama's up to 66 percent now.

The winner will be seen through the polls. These talking heads and quick polls mean little.

The great thing about Obama is sometimes what I dislike about him. He's so goddamned steadfast. There he is, being baited incessantly my McCain to show anger, yet he acts like he knows McCain's game, endures, and then transcends McCain.

This debate was McCain's only chance. He had to emotionally jump on Obama, he had to pummel him with distortions and aggravating lies, and he had to try to get Obama to break. He didn't succeed. McCain tried an emotional tactic and Obama sniffed him out and wouldn't take the bait.

I am a teacher and I encourage my students to passionately and intelligently discuss issues in the classroom. I watched the first Presidential Debate with great anticipation. Two of our nation's leaders were slated to address each other and discuss issues that are important to Americans and our global family. Unfortunately, the debate became a lesson on the dos and don'ts of communication. It is difficult and frustrating to engage in a conversation with someone who refuses to look at you or talk directly to you. Communication is verbal and nonverbal. With the technology we enjoy in the 21st century, the verbal message is amplified and sometimes lost when the nonverbal (body) language is revealed. Many times during the debate, Obama looked directly at McCain and spoke directly to him with respect and in frustration on the issues. But McCain refused to communicate with respect towards Obama. Why? Does he have that much disdain for Obama? If elected, which world leaders will McCain treat in this same manner? People will differ on many issues but a basic level of respect is expected when people meet to discuss their differences. That's just common sense and common courtesy.
