AMERICAblog: Charlie Cook: For Clinton, "the war is pretty much lost"

  • Dave of the Jungle · 1 year ago
All this clouding the issue with facts has a pernicious effect on today's weak reality testing media efforts.

Here is the latest approach I see all over the place for Clinton supporters, an approach that adopts the old "feel, felt, found" used by salesfolks.

It starts something like this. I never really supported either candidate, as early in the nominationo proceess I was feeling pride and hope knowing we had two great candidates. As Obama won caucus states I felt he was looking like the winner. However, because of recent events I found myself thinking more and more that Obama cannot win the nomination, blah blah blah...
I would not be surprised to hear Clintoin and her supplicant sycohant supporters to start arguing Clinton deserves the nomination since she has won more square miles.

The truth of the matter is that Obama has won 28 states and will win at least 2 (North Carolina and Oregon) more (30 out of 50 is 60%, not bad). The truth is Obama is ahead in the popular vote (not counting Florida and Michigan unless a re-vote occurs) and Obama will not lose this lead. The truth is Obama is ahead in the pledged delegate count and will not liose this lead. The truth is Obama will be the democratic nominee unless the democratic party allows her to steal the nomination, tossing aside and discarding the voice and will of the voters nationwide.

I think I trust Cook's judgment...he's the only one I've read that tells the truth about Clinton's fairy tale "double digit victory."

I think you are absolutely correct in your second paragraph. If you go down about ten posts you will find a lenghty conversation I had with a Clinton supporter named Lapinlady. Her biggest reason why she is a Clinton supporter is because "Obama cannot win" and that is why she is going with a "proven entity". No matter how many times I pointed out that Obama is winning, at this point in time, it was ignored.

"I'm a fighter"-Hillary as John McCain appoints another lil Scalia that could to the bench

Somebody tell Hillary! Her real genius is at starting and maintaining a democratic civil war! Real nice.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    Aquarius,
Don't get too rattled by some of the Hillary supporters, I don't think that rationalization comes into play when anyone feels passionately in this particular race. I have seen lots of elections come and go, but this one has it's own unique energy and rigor.

And frankly, it worries me come November as I'm not so sure the Democratic Party will be able to rally their minions together. Perhaps this is the beginning of a new Democratic Party, be that good or bad....
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
The cake mix has already been placed in a bowl, mixed and poured into the pan and has been placed in the perheated oven for about 10 minutes...

AND NOW.....Hillary is now trying to change the recipe of the cake.

    Sorry Hillary.

No matter how much icing you place on the cake, it's STILL the original recipe.

I am not rattled by this but it is frustrating trying to have a civil conversation with someone that just falls back on "Obama cannot win". I don't know if he can or can't but I am willing to give him a chance. I also dislike someone who poses threats as in "you cannot win without us". After spending last night and this morning conversing with this person I really think there will a huge rift in the party in Novemeber.

"COUNT EVERY VOTE"! In 2000 it was the Democrat mantra. Now the Obama Kool-Aid drinkers don't want to count Hillary's primary votes in Florida and Michigan. Hypocrisy is funny!
  • Jimbo62 · 1 year ago
"Count every vote".......Apples and Oranges, those were actual votes, when you run a primary where all candidates say it doesn't count, including Hillary, and then month's later when you need those votes that don't count and I'll remind you once again that Hillary said they don't count..........well geez, every vote should count including the ones that I said didn't count. My god, are you Clinton people so stupid that you can't even listen to Hillary's own words and understand them. There is no other explanation other than stupidity. Watch Jon Stewart from last night, he nails it like no one else can.
  • DickJones · 1 year ago
So the Democrat campaigns got together and decided to disenfranchise every single Democrat resident of a HUGE and important state and you think it's cool because you like Obama? I get it now. "COUNT EVERY VOTE... AS LONG AS IT HELPS OBAMA"!
  • Jimbo62 · 1 year ago
Of course, you know the MSM won't invite Charlie on their shows, what fun would that be? Chuck Todd keeps saying it but then "Morning Joe" ignores it and goes right back to spinning for Clinton and McCain, who in my opinion have become one.
  • Jimbo62 · 1 year ago
I love the analogy to a football game and claiming, we had more yards so we should win. Points schmoints! Delegates schmelegates! Let's all huddle together and decide that Hillary really should have won, so let's just say she did.........on three, OK, Break........
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Hill and Bill are no longer Democrats and they care little whatever comes of the party. As hard as it may be to take in, they care far more for their power crazed dreams and how they can take over the helm of a Presidency without limits and heading no bounds.

Plus, let us remember that it is foolish to believe that our current (or the next) Republican administration wants to do ANYTHING to protect the people of the United States. Sad as it is, this group of miscreants merely want to set the way for what we had in the late 1800's.

This group, call them conservatives (because many are), Neocons (they ARE a different breed from straight conservatives), social conservatives or Libertarians...ALL OF THESE GROUPS are working toward a fairly common goal of enabling the wealthy and encouraging a lower slave worker class.

Perhaps this sounds a bit extreme, but mark my words....the legal maneuvering is in the works to provide for this to happen over the next 10 years (or so). NO unions, NO healthy care, NO advocates for the less privileged...it's almost upon us.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Yikes, that's a bit harsh for such an early hour.

    So sorry!
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
Why can't the MSM tell the truth about Florida and Michigan, Hillary signed a pledge, if that means anything and her name was the only name on the ballot in Michigan. What should be troubling to the Super-Delegates is Michigan, where her name was the only one on the ballot and it still wasn't a landslide victory.

This is very childish, as an adult if you sign an agreement that you will not do a certain thing you cannot go back when the agreement is not working in your favor and say that you will no longer adhere to the agreement that you read and signed.
  • DickJones · 1 year ago
So if you sign an agreement to disenfranchise millions of voters then you can do it. I understand now.

    ================================

I know it's hard if not almost impossible and the anger is visible and the frustration in discussing or arguing with anyone with Hillary in their dreams is palpable. I agree, I don't see how this gulf can be bridged quickly enough to make things all nice by November.

And I don't understand HOW the Dem leadership isn't taking more of a stand here...I know they see the war ahead, but they seem frozen in doing anything about what they see.

    ==================================

The media drives me mad with their LACK of perspective and information about the horror of the Florida and Michigan affair. They DO know better, but it is in their benefit to make this a big mess so that their corporate bosses can smile as they watch the fumes from a party going down in flames.

egads, sorry. It seems I need my coffee before I blog...

    ===============================

That is sheer nonsense! Please don't reduce this complicated discussion to such simplistic terms. It does not serve either of us.

    -------------------------------------------

One more thing: both Hillary and Obama BOTH signed contracts acknowledging that those two states votes would not count due to the individual states disobeying the party rules.

That is what happens when you screw up, you get punished. Now I would add that I don't think that this punishment was a good idea as it punishes the VOTERS and NOT the STATES themselves.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
    DickJones

Why is it that you do not know that it was the DNC that made this ruling and all candidates for the nomination signed agreements?
  • Dave of the Jungle · 1 year ago
    Nice try, Dick.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    DickJones,
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, if that is what the party decided AND all of the candidates AGREED to it, yes that document is binding. Is it fair to the voters? NO, not in my opinion, the states themselves should have been punished, not the individuals.

However, that is besides the point. The agreement was made in good faith and signed by all....that, my dear, is binding, like it or not.
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
    Polly_Tics

It really drive me mad because the media acts like Americans really can't read, write or add, and that we need everything explained to us because we could not possibly understand all of this political stuff by ourselves.

Maybe someone can do a you tube video with her signed pledge and with the videos of Hillary saying that this would be over by Feb 5th. And if Hillary was planning for this to be over by Feb 5th , all of the primaries after that she never gave a dam about. Hillary did not talk about Florida and Michigan until she was losing.

In reality Hillary Clinton did not care about Florida, Michigan and every state that held a primary after Feb 5th.

On just released news that new home sales are down 8-1/2% (lowest in 16 yrs and at the height of home-buying season), the stock market started another decline.

Pretty soon Wall Streeters are going to run out of excuses for their exurberance...and face the music, like the rest of us are doing. And damn it, maybe traders will stop manipulating oil prices? I doubt that one.

The bus service in Charlotte wants to raise one way fares 20 cents. That's a bargain, considering that most people who drive from here to Charlotte would be paying $8.00 one way on average, and an express ticket would be $3, cheaper if you buy them monthly.

Who would have ever thought it would cost $15 dollars or more to make a 60 mile roundtrip? That's a lot out of the budget to pay for transportation, esp. if you're making $7 or $8 an hour, like many do, not necessarily in Charlotte, but this is a rural area, and since jobs are hard to find, people travel from county to county to find jobs.

    ====================================

I know, the media PURPOSEFULLY treats us as idiots but I think it is more because they are lazy and either can't or don't want to bother to try to explain the circumstances.

There is a clip (most likely available on You Tube too) of Hillary saying to some reporter that the results from both Michigan and Florida will not count in this election. Of course that was BEFORE she thought she might actually have to run a real race for the slot.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    Older and Wiser,

Yes, all so terribly true. Plus let's not forget that a few of our warehouse stores are now actually RATIONING rice!

I thought we were supposed to help third world countries, not try to become one.
  • galliganj · 1 year ago
"The rules" are NOT the candidate with the most delegates wins. The rule is the candidate with 2025 delegates wins. This will include the super delegates. Nowhere is there a rule that says a super delegate must vote for the candidate with the most delegates (but not 2025). Clinton stays in the race to convince the super delegates to vote for her. Obama does the same. NEITHER can win without the super delegates. Why in this world should she get out when her opponent does NOT have 2025?
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    galliganj 1 minute ago
    ===========================

Actually that's not totally true. Obama can actually win with the right number of delegates with a fairly rational lineup judging from previous resp0onses.

Take a look at CNN's website and you can figure things out for yourself. IT can actually work.

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/02/29/delegate...
    .
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Roy Romer (previous Gov from Nevada) is saying that this election has gotten too negative.

    Gee, ya think?

He also won't make up his mind until all of the primaries are over.
  • VIGGOROS · 1 year ago
Charlie Cook is a smart and realistic guy. Clinton can't win. Popular vote is nice, but doesn't select the candidate. Super delegates should stop this process by selecting the winner, so we can go forward together against the moron that has destroyed this country. But the remaining super delegates are chicken hawks, afraid of the Clinton's? They think they owe the party, and everybody should step aside when they come running. Please, send them back to Arkansas.
  • Mercedes · 1 year ago
If Clinton can't win, Obama won't win. It will be McCain who will win after all parties take their vote.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Unfortunately, HereinDC, politics isn't about baking a cake; it's about making sausage...
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
If the DNC doesn't make a Florida compromise; then they've probably lost Florida. What's Charlie Cook thinking in his Ivory tower?
