And the "Confederate" groups in SC are going to plant confederate flags along the interstates in SC as well to protest the movement to remove it from the Capitol. If I see one, I'll rip it up...

John, why would having a closet case self-hater being VP help gays?

    I'm stymied.

    Old minds think alike.
  • KerrynowCampau · 1 year ago
I agree. Look at all the damage the closeted members of the current administration have caused.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
Hasn't helped having one for Senator has it?
  • SoLeftImRight · 1 year ago
Exactly. Claiming that having a closet case, self hating gay as VP would be a "major advance of gay rights in America" is preposterous beyond belief...quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever read on this blog. It would give Log Cabin morons a reason to justify their votes, I suppose. That's all I can come up with.
  • OleHippieChick · 1 year ago
Why is it good to have an ambiguously gay veep; he has to come out, no?

Charlie Crist IS Gay....I live in Ft Lauderdale and he was known to be a regular on the very rich Las Olas Gay Party circuit years ago...I a sure that IF he is the VP pick photos will appear of him at parties. By the way did you see the playing cards that some really smart guys are selling at netroots. It is a deck of gay republicans and it is fantastic.
    There site : http://www.gayrepublicancards.com/ I bought a few decks!
  • Jim Olson · 1 year ago
Some patriotic man who has had a liason with Governor Crist needs to come out, publicly, with proof.

Thanks for the link to those cards, I bought a couple of decks. I'll spring them on my friends on our next game night! Ought to make for interesting conversation. :-)

  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Actually, John, the Cole Porter marriage route is an old-fashioned resolution to the issues you raise. It's called a "lavender marriage" and there are lots of them around, at least among the traditionalist communities of the South and the Midwest. Everyone (who's in on the secret) understands and no one (with gracious manners) says a thing about it out loud.

In these days a lavender marriage is so out of date and so irrelevant to the open ways we think are appropriate that it becomes an accidental joke. I doubt Crist's sincerity as well as the sincerity of the McCain-ists who are orchestrating this nonsense. It's "Gone With The Wind" revisited and in a particularly foolish and obsolete way. Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler would have understood perfectly. Several of the gentle folk in that aging epic were probably involved in lavender marriages.

Dishonest? Sure! More to the point: incredibly old-fashioned, quaint and ante-bellum than dishonest. The entire masquerade is stupidly pig-headed and rooted in Confederate virtues that weren't ever virtuous. Nevertheless, Fundamentalists and Catholics thrive on lavender deceit and continue to support lavender marriages in their communities to this day.

The low information voters who make up most of the republican base don't know he is gay and they'll never suspect it once he's married. No matter what photos or rumors come out afterwards, they'll be blamed on evil liberals trying to smear a good man. And remember, its ok if you're a republican to lie about your sex life and cheat on your wife. Plus, if I've learned anything, its that closeted gay republicans are the one most likely to push for anti-gay laws, which is exactly what the GOP base wants.
  • Mikki --SE Pennsylvania · 1 year ago
Lets get real. No matter what benefits might accrue to presumed-gay Crist becoming VP, they are VASTLY outweighed by the fact that it would mean electing Insane McCain as president. Most thinking people still in possession of their faculties consider that a stumbling block of galactic proportions.
  • barts · 1 year ago
As you have hinted to before, the worst kind of gay is a closeted gay who's compensating for his insecurities and inner voice to come out by being even more anti-gay.

As for the distance to the Presidency, our current VP has a daughter who is openly gay and it hasn't helped our causes one bit.
  • Andrew · 1 year ago
I think there is a more fundemental question when it comes to serving in positions of power. Let's face it, we all have skeletons in our closets. As a case in point, look at what the elitists put thenselves through when joining a group like Yales Skull and Bones of which both Kerry and both Bushes are a part of. As part of the indoctrination process, your standing their just about buck naked and have to reveal all of your inner most secrets. This bizzar act can only lead to the outcome of future events. These people aspire to high office not only in government, but politics as well. If you don't pull the company line, then we can use the information you gave us to destroy you as well as your career. This same game has been played for centuries and has probably ruined more lives than one can imagine.
Whether Charlie Crist is gay or not really isn't the issue here, but it does stand out as an exaplme of one individual who may be trying to hide something about his life that others could in the future use against him when wanting certain issues or favors to go their way.
Blackmail in all its forms is incideous, and no doubt given human nature has been used over the years especially in government. Here's another example to think about. When the Dem's got in in 2006, why were the first words out of Pelosi's mouth impreachment is off the table? Could it be that those that serve might have had their phones tapped over the years and that if personal information were exposed, it just might be a career breaker? It wouldn't surpise me in the least considering the dirty tricks that seem to be used at great leverage in D.C.

For 15 years in Washington, D.C., prior to his presidency, Buchanan lived with his close friend, Alabama Senator William Rufus King.[8] King became Vice President under Franklin Pierce. He took ill and died shortly after Pierce's inauguration, and four years before Buchanan became President. Buchanan and King's close relationship prompted Andrew Jackson to refer to King as "Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy," while Aaron V. Brown spoke of the two as "Buchanan and his wife."[9][10] Further, some of the contemporary press also speculated about Buchanan and King's relationship. Buchanan and King's nieces destroyed their uncles' correspondence, leaving some questions as to what relationship the two men had, but the length and intimacy of surviving letters illustrate "the affection of a special friendship,"[9] and Buchanan wrote of his "communion" with his housemate.[11] Such expression, however, was not necessarily unusual among men at the time. Circumstances surrounding Buchanan and King's close emotional ties have led to speculation that Buchanan was America's first homosexual president.[9]

Vice-President William King was commonly believed to be gay, sometimes called "Mr. Nancy". King County in Washington State was named after him (but subsequently was renamed after Martin Luther King).
  • bigtimepatriot · 1 year ago
Wait, I forgot to put in a line about how Republicans always wish for the "good old days" but have a blind spot that the "good old days" ALSO had gay people and "liberals" (although as Mr. King illustrates, not always an overlapping group).
  • JoyceH · 1 year ago
The religious right ABSOLUTELY will not accept Crist. They've already said so. They're finding 'respectable' things to use against him - he's not sufficiently anti-abortion to suit them, they don't like the position he took on their Schiavo mess, but they always add 'among other things'.

Whatever the 'low-information voter' knows or does not know, the evangelical leadership knows darn well the story on Crist and they won't stand for it. They'll out him if they have to, to keep him off the ticket.

The last time I saw a guy as gay as Charlie Crist, I was performing oral sex on him.
The last time I saw a guy as gay as Charlie Crist, he was an understudy in the road company of A Chorus Line.
The last time I saw a guy as gay as Charlie Crist, he was a contestant on Project: Runway.
The last time I saw a guy as gay as Charlie Crist, he was married to Liza Minelli.
The last time I saw a guy as gay as Charlie Crist, he was ripping his entire Bette Midler CD collection to mp3 to put on his bejewelled ipod.
The last time I saw a guy as gay as Charlie Crist, he was playing the bottom in a Jeff Stryker Falcon video bestseller.
The last time I saw a guy as gay as Charlie Crist, he was a closeted Republican who was protecting Mark Foley.
The last time I saw a guy as gay as Charlie Crist, he was wearing patent leather chaps and singing "YMCA".
The last time I saw a guy as gay as Charlie Crist, he was a Bush-enabling closeted fucknut who deserves to be anally penetrated with an oil well derrick (or any well-hung "Derek", for that matter.)
(Oh, and BTW, I am gay. So if any one of you Rethug trolls are offended by what i have written you can - as my idol Kathy Griffin says - all go suck it!)
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
    nice list :-)

but, remember... we're talking about a republican.

you should replace all the 'gay' in the list with "straight".... in quotations of course.

example: The last time I saw a guy as "straight" as Charlie Crist, his head was framed by a gloryhole.
  • Your_Uncle_Bastard · 1 year ago
You are absolutely right! The scare quotes make it so much funnier... :-)

Cillizza mouths the conventional wisdom he hears around the Post, including crap, in this column, about how McCain will be outspent because he didn't opt out of public campaign funding. I emailed him suggesting he do a 5 second Google search on the twinkalicious Jason Wetherington for tomorrow's entry (Why Crist Won't Be a Good Veep).
  • KISSman · 1 year ago
I think that for the majority of people who aren't as tapped into the world of politics as us wouldn't even know about the rumors about Crist. And I'm pretty sure that most of the MSM won't touch this topic. They might talk about the convenient timing of the wedding, but they won't talk about why it truly is convenient. Unless some viral email campaign (a la "Obama is a Muslim") puts it out there, I just don't think it'll be something most average people will really hear about during the campaign.

I think that to make sure he satisfies the evangelicals, he'd better get married and reborn! I'll never forget a terrible argument I had with a rethug in 2002, and I threw the facts that Bush was an alcoholic and a cocaine user. The rethug came back at me and said he was "reborn", so nothing before the rebirth counts.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
I think the term, in bush's case anyway, is 'afterbirth'.
  • Aanya · 1 year ago
Soundboy can I steal "afterbirth"? I'll never again refer to it as being reborn. Magnificent word!
  • nsr · 1 year ago
I don't think he's going to pick Crist. Republican veeps tend to be cynical, power crazed SOBs-- Cheney, Bush 1, Agnew, Nelson Rockefeller, Nixon (but Danno is still gaining acceptance). Crist is a creampuff. Huckabee, maybe.
  • JWSwift · 1 year ago
I would have thought all of this to be true (that it'll never happen with so many rumors floating around) when he was running for Gov of FL, but elected he was. There was even a third-party candidate who was flat-out openly telling the media and anyone who asked that he knew for a fact that Crist was gay (in addition to the non-mainstream local newspaper articles with quotes from people who said they'd heard so-and-so had been in a relationship with Crist, etc.)
Yet, somehow, even without a wife at the time (bachelor for many, many years) and all the rumors, he still got elected by a landslide in a state that's very, VERY heavily religious-right leaning.
    I dunno....
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
they think of Johnny Mathis as someone they'd let their daughters date as well... they thought the same thing of Rock Hudson and Liberace.

I think its the opposite of gaydar... believing someone is heterosexual until there's a picture of them being done at both ends.

even then, if the person in the picture was a good repugnican, they'd claim it was a photoshop job.
  • Charles2 · 1 year ago
I have a family member who was very involved in Republican politics in Florida - mostly at the county level, but with frequent access to state figures - including Crist. This family member said that among the active Republicans it was an "open secret" that he was gay. What they couldn't figure out is with this being pretty well known how he'd gotten so far in the Republican machine.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
Dateline Tallahassee...The United Rent Boys of Florida today announced that they are hiring reinforcements from Miami, Atlanta, LA, and SFO as Governor Crist will be needing more of their services now that he is going to marry a beard. Oh pweez pweez name him VP...and then have him outed.
  • FunMe · 1 year ago
But, but, but ... we are not exactly being fair to Crist.

I hear Charlie Crist is actually bi - bipartisan that is.

Recently I saw him having lunch with Democrat and former governor James McGreevey (wink/wink) and Republican Senator Larry Craig (tap/tap).

It's good to be bi, no? I mean bi-partisan.

After I I did hear Crist say to these men: I am bisexual. Bi me something, I'll get sexual!

He wouldn't be the only closeted GOP VP-wannabe. Mitt Romney is a classic closet case. His relationship with his wife is as scripted and phony as they come. What straight man goes to national television during one of the GOP debates and says in response to a question about his illegal alien sanctuary mansion, "Well, let me first say that I don't have a pink house and would never have a pink house as some have said." It was completely out of context and not even mentioned in the question. But he just had to say it because it was bothering him. Only closeted gays say things like that.

How long before we hear from one of his beaux from his days in gay Paris?

And one of his sons seems to have gotten his gay gene (no one's fooled by his marriage to a woman).

The most powerful person in America, for some thirty years, was a gay drag queen.
I don't recall that J. Edgar Hoover advanced anyone's civil or constitutional rights during that time.

    now now...

just because he liked to dress up in women's clothes and camp it up at private parties... and lived with his mother until she died... then lived with Tolson (another life-long batchelor) until he died...

doesn't mean he was gay... at least, you wouldn't have mentioned it before 1972.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
Personally I could give a fig if he's gay or not, his ties to Mel Sembler, Sembler's defunct organization Straight and it's predecessor The Seed are what sets my hair on fire.... how many "manchurian candidates" do we need really?
  • rja4429 · 1 year ago
Gay or no, Charlie doesn't stand a chance of being VP -- he's merely being (willingly) used by the GOP greed gang to get offshore FL oil drilling, and they suckered him on that one overnight. For VP, he's probably on the C list, if indeed he's made any list. He's already sold his soul to get a head (pun intended), but then he had a great teacher -- Jeb Bush. Is Charlie Gay? Probably. But what good does it do our community to have a VP who is Gay but publicly denies his sexuality? Do we want the world to see us denying ourselves?

  • DavidinChelseaMA · 1 year ago
If Crist IS gay, and is found to have remained closeted throughout his vice presidency, that would do NOTHING for the gay community. If he CAME OUT while in office, THEN it would be helpful, because he would be able to show Middle America how he was obviously ultimately no different than a straight VP.
