AMERICAblog: Charlie Crist does something right

  • wearing out my F key · 12 months ago
personally, i'm inclined to keep the name calling to a minimum, for the sake of being polite, among other reasons. but i insist on my right to say anything i please. you can't ban words, it's in the constitution, and thank god for that, because once you can't say one thing, it's only a matter of time before you can't say anything.
  • Personal Failure · 12 months ago
not to be technical here, but the First Amendment does not protect all types of speech. You cannot incite riots, you can't slander people, and you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater.

nobody is suggesting that we ban words, but the fact of the matter is, you must be willing to accept the consequences of your words, which the religious right never is. you are welcome to call black people the n word if you want, but don't get all surprised when you wake up minus a few teeth.
  • wearing out my F key · 12 months ago
there are limits on speech, but calling someone a fag or or a chinaman or a "magic negro" isn't one of them. you can call someone a magic negro all day long.

as for charlie crist "doing something right", well, no he didn't. he stuck his nose into "a controversey" to curry favor with the voters. much like when hillary went to talk to the rutgers bball team. it's not taking a stand for what's right, it's the most patronising thing in the world.
  • timncguy · 12 months ago
I will agree with you that Charlie Crist did something right if and when he expresses the same opinion about those who disseminate anti-gay speech as well, you know like Pastor Warren.

I see no difference between the two situations. Look at the parallels here between Warren giving the invocation and this song.

It's just a two-minute song (or speech in the case of Warren)
    It's not setting policy
It's just the RNC reaching out and being "inclusive" of the racist memebrs of their party.

It just points back to the fact that racist speech is automatically considered to be wrong. But, anti-gay speech, not so much. It's up for debate. It needs to be discussed and compromised and coddled.

So, the question we've been asking since the Warren announcement.... where is the inclusion of the racists and anti-semites?, has been answered by the reaction to the "magic negro" song. There is no room in the big inclusive tent for racists or anti-semites. But, all the anti-gays, come on in, sit down, let's see where we can compromise on civil rights for teh gays....
  • Gridlock · 12 months ago
that's what i've been saying as well.

    Racism = horrible

    Anti-semitism = terrible

anti-gay bigotry = valid viewpoint to be included.
  • smallhandff · 12 months ago
hey john, how bout using the above comment as a lede for your next posting? where's the shock that the lgbt marching band has still not canceled its parade appearance?
  • Lolis · 12 months ago
i get your complaint, but you want john to stop caring about racism against obama because obama chose warren to give a prayer?
  • timncguy · 12 months ago
No, we want EVERYONE in this country is is rightly outraged by racism and anti-semitism to also be outraged by anti-gay rhetoric as well. We want people to stop thinking of LGBT roghts (which includes more tha just marriage) as social issues and start thinking of them as civil rights issues the same way they think about racism and anti-semitism.

We are just being "inclusive" by trying to include sexual orientation and gender identity into the exisiting civil rights classes.
  • Lolis · 12 months ago
I agree with that. I was responding to this idea that people should overlook prejudices if they happen to be against people who have made the LGBT community mad. But I think most people who read this blog think that LGBT issues are civil rights issues.
  • Maas · 12 months ago
You guys CHOOSE to be nasty fags and have gender identity "issues." What the fuck? You CHOOSE the lifestyle.

Sorry of the whole fucking world isn't on-board with your sodomy and repulsive LIFESTYLES!!!!!

NO ONE gives a fuck about your desire for "rights." Ok? It is the LEAST of BO's worries!
  • timncguy · 12 months ago
sexual orientation is not a choice. But, religion IS A CHOICE. So, I guess based on your opinion we should remove religion from the exisiting civil rights legislation so that people could be fired for being christian. Or, denied housing for being christian. etc, etc, etc
  • Mark in Florida · 12 months ago
...and you have summed it up beautifully. Perfect. Good points all.
  • Jay Randal · 12 months ago
Crist is just positioning himself to try to snag the 2012 GOP nomination for president. He has married a woman, his beard, and paid off his former male lovers to seal their lips about him being Gay. He is trying to act like a moderate Republican so not a crazy evangelical right-winger.
  • BackSeatDriver · 12 months ago
Why was it OK for an LA Times columnist to originally use the term in an article? Does he get a pass since he was essentially praising Obama? How do you people not see the BS double standard going on here? It is a parody album. There are other songs on there besides Barak the Majic Negro. This guy shouldn't be persecuted for gifting a comedy CD with a song on it calling out the LA Times columnist for using the term negro. If it were a democrat or a black man, this would be a complete non-issue. The guy is only being persecuted for being a republican. You people SUCK.
  • Gridlock · 12 months ago
Yes, because historically the Republican party has been all about minority rights and equality.

Do you feel the vortex of stupid pulling at you from your own black hole of a mind?
  • example · 12 months ago
The term was thought up by African Americans, apparently "popularized" by spike lee, who has a history of making rather sharp comments. I don't think Spike Lee would make a good GOP chairman either.

Also, the LA Times columnist never called Obama a "Magical Negro", he was criticizing people who thought of him that way. Also the whole song is offensive. The guy playing "al sharpton" doesn't sound anything like Al Sharpton, rather he sounds like a stereotypical street thug. Using a word doesn't make you a racist, it's how you use it.
  • Jay Randal · 12 months ago
I wonder where Worthington -- I believe that is how you spell his name -- Crist's young male lover is hiding out? Has he fled Florida or does he sleep with the fishes? Just wondering anyway.
  • LeftCoastOracle · 12 months ago
Ken Blackwell hates his own race so much he would do anything to garner the support of white folk. I guess we could call that internal racism.
  • Jay Randal · 12 months ago
One other question: Is George W. Bush ever going to be exposed as a closeted Gay guy? He had an older male lover at Yale and he hung out with Jeff Gannon/Guckert the male prostitute in DC.
  • nicho · 12 months ago
Oh please. We gay people have enough to deal with without being saddled with Bush.

Seriously, why do people think that the best way to put someone down is to accuse them of being gay. That is the extreme of homophobia.

Bush is a sociopath, a murderer, a liar, a traitor -- that should be enough.
  • Personal Failure · 12 months ago
c'mon nicho, he gets accused of "hiding behind skirts" and other such "girly" traits, and we can't very well accuse him of being black, sooooo . . . .
  • Me · 12 months ago
    Get over yourself already.

I don't think Jay Randal meant classifying Bush as a closeted gay guy as an insult... you took it as one and I think that speaks volumes of you and how you perceive people, and not Jay Randal who only asked a valid question.
  • Jay Randal · 12 months ago
nicho > I did not post my question to offend anyone. Closeted Gay hypocrites cause problems for openly Gay community. Crist instead of admitting he is Gay gets married to a woman as cover-up, then most likely will still sneak out to find a guy for sex. Same thing applies to Bush. He hung out with Jeff Gannon, but nobody had the guts to out Dubya on it.
  • example · 12 months ago
I can only hope some splash damage takes down that uber-slease Ken Blackwell.
  • Haon · 12 months ago
As Chris Rock said, being able to use these racially charged words is one of the few privileges that black people enjoy over white people.

"White men always think it's unfair because they can't say" the "N" word (which, of course, Rock said). "OK, I'll trade you," he said. "You can say it, and I'll raise interest rates."
  • MikeinSanJo · 12 months ago
Because I can call myself a fag, you can't.

This line of thinking has always bothered me. Whether it's a sexual or racial slur, if you feel it's inappropriate when someone uses the word toward you, why make it okay to use the word yourself?

A young person, hearing people use words like these, doesn't see the distinction of "It's okay for me, not okay for you". All they know is that they hear these words used in popular culture and then get slammed if they repeat what they hear.

I spent time in Texas when I was very young ('68-'71) and there was pervasive use of a certain racial epithet, both in my home and in the community. 30+ years later, I still struggle not to use the word when I'm angry and no one beats me up more about it than I do. (For the record, I don't say it out loud. It bothers me when it just crosses my mind.) It's a horribly mixed message to say it's okay for some but not others to use.

My point is, if the word is wrong, then it's wrong. Period. No quibbling, no justifications, nothing. If I don't want someone calling me a fag (or anything else), then I don't open the door and make it look like I don't mind by using the word to refer to myself.
  • Personal Failure · 12 months ago
Duh! I cannot, cannot, cannot believe that anyone in this country, and especially a politican, does not know that you can't use an epithet unless you are a member of the group potentially insulted by said epithet. I am welcome to call myself a bitch, but I can't say n****r or f**. I am fine with this. It wouldn't even occur to me. Of course, I am neither a homophobe nor a racist.

Just how stupid does the GOP think we are.
  • RoseTattoo · 12 months ago
Rush Limbaugh shouldn't be getting a pass here. It should come as no surprise, given the offensive nature, that this material originated on his show. http://mediamatters.org/items/200703200012
  • scottinsf · 12 months ago
Has anybody mentioned that the writer that wrote the piece in the LA Times that supposedly inspired this "song" is occasional Americablog commenter David Ehrenstein?

    Barack the Magic PrezO
    Endorses bigotry
Puts its in a hat of a preacher who's fat
    And pulls out 'Unity'!

    Barack the Magic PrezO
Has a wide grin & big ears
If you use pot (like he used to do a lot)
He'll make you disappear for 5 years!

    Barack the Magic PrezO
    Will a '1-term Wonder' be
Then he'll go back to Chicago
    Wondering, "What happened to me?"
  • lodestar · 12 months ago
Where are these losers coming from? Hillbuzz? Noquarter?
  • Observer · 12 months ago
Please point out where I'm wrong.

    Can't? Hmm.

    Thanks for playing!

As far as repubs go, Charlie isn't as bad as many of them. I didn't vote for him, but he hasn't done anything too terrible (yet).

One thing he DID do that I like was to get an affordable health insurance program made available to all Floridians under 65 years old. It's bare-bones, but it's something.

I just wish he hadn't given (albeit tepid) support to Amendment 2 (making same-sex marriage unconstitutional).
  • davidkc · 12 months ago
This is a statement from Jim Greer, NOT Charlie Crist.
  • Indigo · 12 months ago
When you least expect it, something responsible comes from Charlie. By the way, he's not brown, he's orange.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 12 months ago
"Disappointed." "Inappropriate." Tepid stuff from Closet Man. He doesn't want to show too much emotion.
  • HST · 12 months ago
Let me get this straight, Christ was single till an older age than 'normal' and because of that you're certain he's gay and you state it as if it's an insult. As a fourty something straight male I kinda take exception to that but thanks, I needed a little weirdness to chew on this evening.
  • timncguy · 12 months ago
actually there was much more evidence than just his marital status. Many people reported having seen him frequent gay bars on a regular basis. Others have claimed to know of same-sex encounters he has participated in.

You will only find an "accusal" of someone being gay sounding like an insult when it is used against those hypocrits that oppose gay equality in public while engaging in gay "behavior" in private.
  • Maas · 12 months ago
Most of you folks are just pissed that while Crist MAY be gay; he was NO intention of being lumped in with you whiney fags --- you've made him hetero!! Haha!!
  • mauro7inf · 12 months ago
Crist is a good guy. He's a Republican, true, but he's much better than Jeb Bush. It would be nice if a Democrat can take him out in '10, but he, unlike almost everyone else in that party, gives the Republican party a not-so-awful name.

And I would strongly support his coming out of the closet -- perhaps he's bi -- and as a bonus, it would be beautiful to see the apoplectic faces of the actual crazy Republicans Florida is full of when they find out. (:
  • Chit · 12 months ago
Your justification for why it's ok for you to cal yourself a fag when others can't is the lamest thing I think I've ever seen you post. It is frightening how out of touch you are.
