AMERICAblog: Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Powell, Tenet and Ashcroft discussed and approved torture methods

The disturbing part is that I'm not that disturbed at all. If it comes out that we were reviewing notes from Nazi Germany for torture ideas, I don't think I'd be that surprised.

The Nazis got some of their techniques from us. They studied techniques we used at the border to delouse Mexican day workers. The gas they used in the extermination camps was the same we used on day workers, only a higher concentration.
We're all good Germans now.

A very interesting issue showing that if the caucuses had been primaries, Obama would have been in an even better position that it is now.
It's troubling to me that this shit from this group of people doesn't even suprise me anymore. And I skated past disgust with this gang of war criminals a couple of years ago.

As a kid Bush got off sticking firecrackers in frogs butts and setting them off. I doubt he's changed much. He truly seems to relish other peoples pain.

They will find an excuse to declare martial law.

Of course Powell would agree to this. He tried to conceal My Lai.
It is a deeply ingrained Republican thing. After 4 decades there should be no surprise only a proper society's civilized reaction. This continuing defect of purpose and threat to civilization should cause the GOP to be given the same hospitality as the KKK.

So this star-chamber they have set up is disturbing to the extreme. How long until we have roving death-squads right here? Ity isn't like they couldn't pull it off. Complicit courts, complicit MSM, complicit political opposition, complicit lazy-ass Americans in general.
I'm sorry but I don't think the voting booth is going to be enough right now.

Cheney should have a pacemaker glued to his testicles.
When you couple a loss of Habeas Corpus with a seeming lax view of the use of torture, you get a citizenry that "should" be alarmed. However it seems that the media isn't elaborating the larger picture on our collective loss of civil rights.

He's got that right.

Then-National Security Advisor Rice, sources said, was decisive. Despite growing policy concerns -- shared by Powell -- that the program was harming the image of the United States abroad, sources say she did not back down, telling the CIA: "This is your baby. Go do it."
"John Yoo's complicity in establishing the policy that led to the torture of prisoners constitutes a war crime under the US War Crimes Act," said National Lawyers Guild President Marjorie Cohn.

I heard Charles Gibson introduce this story on tonight's news and tried my best to remember the exact way he phrased it. I intended to write him a nasty note later. But I've forgotten! I'm such a senior! What he said was something classically passive voice though, meaning: it was legal because "someone" had pronounced it legal. Last I heard, of course, Congress has the power to make things legal or not, to abrogate international treaties, and so on.

I remember when the major networks used their NEWS programs as a Public Service? They used that slot as a way to actually GIVE BACK to the public at a profit loss for them.

I am not sure how the case proceeded in France but at least Rumsfled was charged as a war criminal. You may not remember this story of Rumsfeld fleeing a Paris breakfast meeting because he thought he was going to be arrested.
War crimes have been committed; we hung the Japanese for doing it, we put sheriffs in jail for it. We know who did it, and when.

I can't help but believe once Bush is out of office, all hell is going to break loose with the crimes these "evil doers" have perpetrated on this country. Bush will not be able to give pardons once he is gone. We will have years in court.

I'm normally a very calm fellow. I don't get too upset by the news very often. Disappointed sometimes. But this really pisses me off. Were it within my power, I would build a prison far worse than Guantanamo where the leaders of these particular Christians would have to spend the rest of their natural lives:
There would be no mercy, no lawyers, no appeals, no parole and no hope. On good days, and only with extremely good behavior, the inmates would get to be waterboarded. Most days would be far worse. This kind kind of obscene behavior does not get a free pass just because it is done it the name of a someone's god. I would loudly applaud Texas if they slapped these bastards in jail, threw away the key, and burned their damned temple to the ground and made a public park out of the property. This is not about freedom of religion. This is about the worse forms of child abuse. People can live in the 14th century if they choose to but they should not be allowed to take their children with them. 4 kids by age 16? Just why in the hell did Texas allow this to go on so long?

"...the most senior Bush administration officials discussed and approved specific details..." It's not bad, it's good- the closer they can be brought to bear, the better chance for war crimes or other charges to stick.
An_American_Karol

Ed, I don't understand it either. It seems to me if a crime against the country is committed, freedom of religion should not be able to trump the law. Surely, if I had a religion calling for human sacrifice, the law would have me in jail. I don't get it.

"The United States Does Not Torture!" From the mouth of a good Christian who really loves, ya know, Jesus and all that. The point here is America is safer and these evil doers are, ya know, really pissed off at having their nuts connected to car batteries. Its in the Old Tetsment somewhere that this stuff is cool, at least thats what all of these rabid Jews I ahve surrounded myself with tell me

Interesting, that in the segment Ashcroft mentions how history won't look kindly on all this sordid business. No, history will not be kind. I remember helping my daughter with her homework last year, when she attended a Portuguese school; I was helping her prepare for the coming history test on the years of the dictator Salazar. Unfortunately, I was able to give her a great deal of context by comparing Salazar's violations of democracy with Bush's. You can read it here, in "Another History Lesson": http://www.mcsweeneys.net/links/philipgraham/25...
