They should NOT cut down the tree - a huge beautiful oak is a testament to nature, God, life. Just put a memorial stone or placard (cast iron, stone, heavy, with the date of the tree's planting, and call it something like "The Tree of Irony, planted to honor an evil man, outlives him, and gives nurture to nature and mankind."
Would it be too sensible to put the roundabout around the tree and let it stand as The Peace Tree?

Apparently it is.
It's not the tree's fault it was planted in honor of Hitler. I hope they let it be.

Another case of missing the forest through the trees.

I know! I know! I know!
RENAME THE TREE. Explain that it was meant to celebrate the Thousand Year Reich - which lasted a scant 12 years.
Those who forget the past are doomed to forget it.
Preserve it, but say EXACTLY WHY it's being preserved. And if local fascist skinheads make too much of it, then like Mayor Daley in Chicago put X's in Meiggs Field to make it Northerly Island again, cut it down in the middle of the night and make toothpicks out of it. :D
Either way, teach or lose the battle.
Ugh.

Rename the tree--I'm for that too. Let's call it Moishe or Shlomo.

Silly, blaming and punishing a tree for being named after Hitler. On the other hand, its only a tree if the symbolism is too much and the damn Right Wingers use it as one of their rallying points.

Surely you are not suggesting some low hanging fruit?

Letting the tree remain wouldn't be sick, in contrast to laying a wreath each year on the grave of war criminal Fritz Ter Meer, as Bayer execs do. http://www.cbgnetwork.org/1695.html

I think I would chop down the tree. Then I would plant another tree, or a grove of trees, in memory of someone else. The tree could be near the end of its life-span; you never know. Better to start anew, and get rid of a bad memory.

Why on earth is anyone saying it's wrong to cut down a tree planted in honor of Hitler?
First of all -- Its a tree. Just a frickin' tree. Cutting it down will not cause an environmental calamity, they can plant another so as not to accelerate climate change.
Second of all -- it is a memorial to the greatest mass murderer of all time. You can rename it The Sponge Bob Memorial Garden, but it is still the tree planted to honor Hitler.
Third of all -- for Christ's sake its a memorial to Hitler!!! Are you actually arguing to keep a memorial to Hitler around? What the hell is wrong with you people. -- it's a frickin' tree!!!

Let's burn down the Kremlin, too!
Stalin is arguably responsible for more deaths (estimates range as high as 60 million, with 13 to 17 million widely accepted) than Hitler (11 million).
I'm being sarcastic. Dedicating a tree to Hitler doesn't make the tree evil any more than wearing crucifix makes someone good. Each thing is itself, regardless of what others call it.

For G-d's sake just hang PEACE signs, PINK TRIANGLES and STARS OF DAVID all over it! That would do the trick! Now THAT would turn a "Memorial to Hitler" upside down, wouldn't it?
Imagine as the branches grow the little PINK TRIANGLES, STARS OF DAVID and PEACE signs growing higher and higher towards the heavens as a message that HATE and INTOLERANCE will be converted to PEACE and TOLERANCE for those that were oppressed and murdered. Make that tree a MESSAGE that hate will not ever win!
Okay, I read the article:
""We obtained information that this is no ordinary tree but was put here to mark Adolf Hitler's birthday," said Jaslo's mayor, Maria Kurowska. "So should I try to improve our town's communications or should I allow a memorial to that criminal to remain standing? The choice is simple for me."
If the tree is in the way, then there is no good reason to keep it! Improve the town's communications and plant some other trees to make up for its loss. Until I read the article, I thought they were just going to chop it down because it was a hateful reminder.

It's just a tree. The only meaning it has is what people give to it. Sounds like it was slated to be felled to make way for a road. Just like any other tree. Let the axe man cometh.
