AMERICAblog: Clinton (and McCain) attacking Obama (and the Democratic party) over the gas tax gimmick

  • grandma · 1 year ago
Hillary Clinton and John McCain favor this dopey, irresponsible proposal, which would save individual motorists a grand total of $28, but which would result in $9 billion in lost tax revenues, much of it targeted for infrastructure needs.

(Senator Clinton says she would recoup the losses with a windfall profits tax on oil companies. Don’t hold your breath.)

No one with a serious understanding of the nation’s energy needs supports this foolishness. Senators Clinton and McCain have been assailed by editorial writers on the left and the right for pandering. Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City was stinging in his criticism, calling the proposal “about the dumbest thing” he’d heard in a long time.

“Obama was right on this one, and McCain and Clinton were wrong,” said Mr. Bloomberg. “The last thing we need to do is to encourage people to drive more and to take away the monies we need for infrastructure in this country.”

Jonathan Singer had a good post about this on the otherwise pro-Hillary mydd yesterday.

Namely, Hillary telling Democratic members of congress to get with her on this has really pissed a lot of them off.

Which is not too smart because many of them are undeclared Superdelegates.

You just know this "gas tax holiday" scam had to have come from her political people.

"Politics as policy," just like when Dick Morris was calling the shots in Bubba's White House.
  • Paul_In_SF · 1 year ago
Well, just like Caucus states, Democrats don't count when it comes to Hillary.

Republicans have nothing but gimmicks to offer - and I think an increasing number of Americans are seeing right through them this year.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
Americans always respond to discount coupons and anything that they can be convinced benefits them not the guy down the street or the bridge or road that needs repairing. Hillary is all about self and so panders to the Average American cause that is what they are about.

Obama voted to repeal the gad tax as an Illinois Senator. Is he a flip flopper, a politician or did he lear from his mistake?
  • jr · 1 year ago
Hillary doesn't see the potholes and bridge cracks from the back of her limo. Next she'll be complaining Obama wants to repeal the Bush tax cuts
  • rugbyman · 1 year ago
Lynchie - are you referring to the same Hillary that got agent orange recognized as a problem so vets could get treatment, the same Hillary that is trying to cover all Americans with health coverage, the same one who gave over 10% of their income to charity? Wow is that is selfish and all about ego then i hate to think what Obama is like - did he give 10% of his income to charity? Please stop the personal attacks when they are not true. You dumb down the discourse
  • gonzalez · 1 year ago
Wrong about Clinton. She is dumbing down the primary. Just to fit with the electorate. This is just what we need in th1s country, another lying Bush.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
Rugbyman: First off she had better vote to help the vets she voted to go to war twice idiot. In terms of their 10% charity donation it was to their own foundation which has paid out less that $250K of the principle has ever been paid out. When you have an income of $100 Million you have to shelter it somewhere, right? There is nothing personal about saying she is all about herself and her belief that she has a manifest destiny to be President.. Giving money to yourself is soooo trendy so you can then deduct it and take credit as you dole it out.

In reply to your comment re agent orange she had nothing to say about that. She asked for an investigation into Gulf War Syndrome from the first Gulf War. Commendable but not a single piece of legislation was ever passed. Politicians have lots of comments to make and she is no better or worse than the Washington turds she is part of. Is she championing an end to the war, NO. Is she championing anything but her supposed vast experience, NO.

Pelosi and Hoyer have some tough words about a proposed gas tax holiday.

The gas tax holiday supported by presidential candidates Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) will be dead on arrival in the House, Democrats made plain Thursday.

It was senior aides behind the scenes who described the idea as "DOA," but the party’s topmost leaders were clear that they sided firmly with Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), the only White House contender who opposes suspending the gas tax.

    Uh-oh. Looks like we're screwed: http://www.talkleft.com/story/2008/5/2/215016/4476

Excerpt: Senators Kimberly A. Lightford (D-4th) and Barack Obama (D-13th) said the bill gives customers needed temporary relief from high gas prices. "Gas retailers must post on each pump a statement that indicates that the state tax has been suspended and that this temporary elimination of the tax should be reflected in the price per gallon of gas," said Obama.

Rugbyman -- you mean the same Hillary whose health care plan is a big fat gift to the insurance companies and drug companies that have financed her campaign. Terrible terrible health care plan.
  • gonzalez · 1 year ago
The democratic party better wake up NOW and get this idiot out. I can't believe what she is doing. She knows that Obama is against it as much as the country is agaist the gas tax holiday and yet, she keeps hammering away. This will prove how dumb the electorate is. I can't believe we are in the United States! It seems as if I'm in some third world country being manipulated by the politicians and the press. Welcome to the Societ Union!
  • rugbyman · 1 year ago
nicho - Obama has the same plan as Hillary with one exception. it is not a gift to insurance companies unless you call the government plan that covers senators a "big insurance" plan. Have you read the plan?
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
    HarleyLady

No I don't think so. I said last week sometime that he should state the reasons why he is against it and one of those reasons is because he knows first hand, it didn't work.
  • rugbyman · 1 year ago
gonzales - was obama pandering and dumbing down the electorate when he voted to suspend the gas tax as an illinois senator? I think it is a bad idea to repeal it but you all hate clinton and barrack did the same thing 5 years ago.
  • dances_with_beagles · 1 year ago
This challenge has little or nothing to do with the gas tax if you understand Clintonian subterfuge. This is the final challenge: either join with me for the nomination or I'm taking the Party down, your choice. Can't fully blame the Clintons for the downfall however, it's the redneck Reagan democrats who have given Clinton the power to issue these ultimatums, and also gave us, umm, Reagan, the Bushes, the Clintons to begin with, along with the miseries and destruction of the nation over the last 30 years.
  • rugbyman · 1 year ago
dances with beagles - hillary will win the nomination outright. she wins in NC and its over. you all think obama has a lock on this. did you see Kansas come back by 9 points in 2 mins against Memphis? you can come from behind and win as long as you do not give up. She is an amazing lady who I would be proud to say is my president. it has nothing to do with taking down the party.
  • dances_with_beagles · 1 year ago
She has already lost the delegate count regardless of the NC outcome. Only way for her to win is for the super-delegates to override the outcome which has already been decided. If that happens, the Party splits and it's over for the Dems.

This isn't working with the expanding ad column. It is not impossible to read BUT it is darn hard. The print in the comment section also seems smaller. A fraction more and I would think I hit an ad page, not a blog page.
  • rugbyman · 1 year ago
override what? his led in delegates? he never reached the threshold. do you understand that? he did not win. the only way for him to win is for the superdelegates to vote him in too. so she wins the popular vote and he is leading in delegates but neither one has the necessary pledged delegates. so you think he deserves it more that she does? i think otherwise

I don;t recall gas prices being at record highs in 2000.

All of the criticism of this gas tax holiday focus on macro-economic issues -- the long run. The famous saying is that in the long run we'll all be dead,

I think the truly hypocritical position is to vote in favor of the current tax stimulus package, and then take a macro-economic approach to a gas holiday. Reports say that most people will be spending the rebates on gas.

Where were all these staunch macro-economists when this current tax rebate fiasco was being debated? I guess since there was no way to nail Hilary Clinton over it, they moved on to something else.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Of course there were record gas prices in 1999 and 2000. Nothing like today's prices but nonetheless they were high and trending higher.

Gee, but Tweety, Mornin' Blow, the hapless CNN political team, Pat Buchanan, and various deep cover HRC shills, as ethnically diverse a majority group as one is likely to find on corporate nooz, have been pushing the Hillary Fairy Tale (the sisters Grimm?) for days non-stop.
Even that pitiful hack Charlie Gibson appeared on Diane Sawyer's mourning nooz this week to bravely say, with nary a sniffle, his asinine debate questions were not the ravings of a hack hand puppet...And, if you can't take the word of a two-faced hack hand puppet at one-face value, what's good journalisming going to do???

The gas compamies will simply raise their price by .18 and there is nothing the government can do about it. I expect stupid stuff from McCain but Hillary should know better.
  • Redphilly · 1 year ago
Blue Collar America has to realize that this is not the time to just pick your favorite color. They are voting for Hillary just because she is Caucasian. You must choose a president who will get us out of the mess in which we find ourselves. Put there by a Caucasian American. Obama has proven that he is smarter than his opponents, i.e, Iraq participation vote and the gas situation. You must also realize that putting Obama in office does not mean that the "slaves will be running the plantation". We are not slaves anymore and this country is not a plantation. Obama will be a president for all people in America, no matter the race.

The Democratic race for nomination is very much alive – and most likely to be decided by superdelegates. Nevertheless.. Indiana ,Idaho and West Virginia are still to come.

If you’re tired of waiting around for those super delegates to make a decision already, go to LobbyDelegates.com and push them to support Clinton or Obama

If you haven't done so yet, please write a message to each of your state's superdelegates at http://www.lobbydelegates.com

It takes a moment, but what's a few minutes now worth to get Obama in office?!

Sending a note to current Obama supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Clinton supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Obama, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Obama. It's that easy...

    Clinton Supporters too …. !

REALLY easy to identify the superdelegates and reach out to them! It includes a list of names, addresses, and affiliations of superdelegates from each state including your state
