AMERICAblog: Clinton spokesman outright lies about Hillary telling O'Reilly "Rich people...God bless us." It's bizarre.

Though I prefer Obama over Clinton, I still think that Clinton has a better shot.
A friend of mine who is a Republican operative in Miami, said that there is going to be an avalanche of dirt on Obama from GOP. He said that Clinton's team is too busy with the heat of the campaign to spend any time or money on deep research -- but that GOP, especially well-funded 527s, have got researchers deployed in Indonesia, Hawaii, Kenya, Pakistan, etc. digging, digging, and digging.
He said Obama will be crushed.

I know the Obama campaign wants to take the high road BUT if this isn't used to dispel the myth of her "working girl" image I think they would be missing a huge opportunity.

It is actually worse to me if she said God BlessED them, meaning that God decided they deserved money and he didn't so bless most people. I hate that.

It's clearly "God bless us." But even if it were "God blessed us," what kind of warped Christianity is that? Jesus favored the poor and oppressed, not the rich. What have we become?

It was terribly stupid of her, especially since she is trying to paint herself as "one of us". I bet this won't even be a blip in the media and that is a shame.

What is odd is why Wolfson denied it. It is clear that she said it and he thinks this will make it go away? It only makes it worse.
I doubt that it will turn into anything though.

I'm an Obama supporter, but I thought it was pretty clear that she was being sarcastic. Obviously Wolfson was panicking because he knew that people would misinterpret it. It's stupid. He should have just said she was being sarcastic and move along.

God blessed the 4,000 or so dead US soldiers and several thousand dead Iraqis so much so that God gave Hillary's bank account a sufficiently impressive increase to make her something she had never been before, rich.

Not too busy to release -- too busy to conduct.
Think about it -- GOP is currently in power -- they run the gov't including CIA, FBI, DOD intelligence, etc.
So, don't be naive -- they have far more resources than Clinton and are taking advantage of the ongoing Dem contest to gather all the facts they need, which will be spun into sound bites that will sink Obama.

Because rich people, with a few exceptions, plow their money back into the economy and help themselves and disadvantaged citizens to new wealth.
This is what my father-in-law has done with his wealth and this is in fact how most people who get wealthy do it. If you sit around a hope that the government is going to make you wealthy you will be you are going to die poor. That is unless you are an administrator, or Congressman. The only thing the government knows how to do well is oppress the governed. It matters not if you are a D or an R they are all the same and all ways will be. If you put this nation in McCains hands he is going to raise taxes, start up a carbon tax, chase jobs overseas, and hand out more checks so the "poor" can get by. If you put the nation in the hands of Hillery she is going to raise taxes, start up a carbon tax, chase jobs overseas, and hand out more checks so the "poor" can get by. If you put this nation in to Big Love Obomas hands he is going to raise taxes, start up a carbon tax, chase jobs overseas, and hand out more checks so the "poor" can get by. And the wealthy will take there money OUT of job making tax earning viable and useful investments and place there wealth into tax free muni-bonds so the government can keep there checks going to to the "Poor" In the end the only real people who pay the taxes is the middle class and the ones who are trying to gain wealth. The rich loaning money to the middle-class so the Politicos can buy the votes of the poor. Welcome to the USA! What a sad fucking joke, I would laugh about it if I had half a hart left to feel. But there is nothing left in me now but a numbness that I hope never leaves.

Hangtown Danile,
I hate to point out the error and irony in your statement that those that sit around and hope that the government is going to make them wealthy will die poor, but Hillary found a way, by hanging around government long enough, to allow government to make her wealthy, as do many reprresentatives ans Senators.

This doesn't strike me as that huge a deal. Rich people as a class are taking a lot of heat because they've been so privileged during the Bush administration, but most of them had little to do with the Bush/Cheney policies, and lots of them are just as dismayed as we are at what Bush has done to the country. Why shouldn't "God" bless everyone, rich, middle-class, working-class, poor?
Maybe it's because I'm an atheistic buddhist, but statements about God and blessing don't really strike me as inflammatory, unless it's something ridiculous, like if Phelps said "God bless Bin Laden" or something whacky like that.
Heck, I've heard people use the phrase "God bless 'em" or "God love 'em" as just a throwaway interjection.
I think this is just another example of reaching to create a mountain out of a molehill by someone who's already made their mind up to hate Hillary, and just looking for continuing justification to feel good about that decision. It's sad what some on the left are doing to her, the ill will that creates on both sides, tearing apart one of our own, and that does not bode well for November.

QED...QED...back in the nineties, Hill-Billy came up with this wretched German styled education idea which basically would split kids into two distinct groups at age 12 via a terrible "O" level type exam: group A goes to college and medical school or law school and group B goes to garbage collection school. This report got very little attention at the time, outside of education circles. Basically a kid who flakes off into middle school BUT wakes up in high school and begins really working hard would be doomed forever through her system. Ask any German who has ever tried to climb back out of this system...it is very antithetical to American bootstrap thinking. Her tone, at the time, was very elitist..."we know what's good for the little pickaninnies." As much as I admired Bill for many things, I have never trusted this bitch one inch. I wish I could find this education plan she came up with...at the time, teachers were shocked.

And just to add...my cousin was a total fuck up through high school. His guidance counsellor told him he would never amount to anything. He joined the Air Force. Spent four years on the Arctic Circle and found a library on the base. Well I guess he was so bored he began reading books...lots of books...he eventually came home and eventually got a PhD in English Literature and is now a full professor at a small college in PA. He is the perfect example of why Hill-Billy should NOT be anywhere near education.

Ever notice how much Bill O'Reilly and Hillary are alike? Both know-it-alls. Why a nation would want to inflict itself with Hillary is a mystery to me. The Clinton camp makes it sound like everybody's waiting for Hillary to take over! I have yet to meet or know anybody who can even stand her. She needs to disappear for the good of the nation. Even hubby Bill is out of touch lately. It's a different time and their time is over.

The point isn't whether it was appropriate to say what she said, it's the lying to cover it, as if it was indeed a bad thing to say. I used to tell my kid, don't compound a bad thing by covering it with a lie, it only leads to getting in trouble twice. So, if it wasn't meant to be insulting to those of us who are not rich by making it sound like G*d should bless rich people, the lie makes it seem like that's what she meant. The fact that it can be PROVEN she said bless instead of blessed makes lying about it even more insulting than what she actually said.

Once again, much ado about nothing. We try to take every single phrase every candidates utters, and analyze it to death. I've decided to support Obama, but give it a rest. She was simply making the point that wealthy people were very lucky. To me, it came across as clearly acknowledging that she realizes she's been lucky/blessed to get where she is.
This forum frequently attacks the MSM for focusing on BS that has little to with the substance of running a country, and now we're falling into the trap. For crying out loud, raise the level of debate here from something below the sub-basement. What did she say about actual issues? Did anyone bother to make note of that...or are we just gonna be an echo chamber for Faux News glomming onto this one little phrase?

Look, I'm pro-Obama and hope he'll wind up as the Democratic candidate. But you do him a disservice by drumming up anti-Hilary attacks that have no substance. I saw the clip with her and O'Reilly. She was arguing that "rich people" should pay more than they have been paying in taxes. Period. And she was acknowledging, under O'Reilly's prompting, that yes, that would include her as well.
There are plenty of legitimate reasons to criticize Hilary. But, come on, is the question whether she said "God bless us" or "God blessed us" one of them? Items like this just trivialize any valid criticisms you may have, and it comes across as just a cheap shot.

When I heard her say this, I thought there would be those who would take issue with it, and I was right. You can clearly see from some of the responses here (and the fact that the reporter asked about it in the first place) that WHAT Clinton said is obviously just as important to people as her campaign trying to lie about it.
It really stinks that the Clinton campaign tried to spin this into something it clearly wasn't. But it also really stinks that our society is such that she would HAVE to worry about having said it.
It's not an issue of God having blessed rich people and damning all others--any more than you can say that one person survives cancer because God blessed them and someone else fights it and dies because God didn't. Whether you want to call it God's blessing or luck, sometimes the cards are shuffled in your favor. It's what you do after that happens that matters.
Over ten years ago, my wife had an idea and worked her ass off to start her own company. She was a smart, driven single mom who was determined to make a good life for her kids--no matter what. Every day since then, she has sacrificed her time and sanity to make sure that the company succeeds and does well--not to ensure her own welfare, but to ensure the financial security of her children, as well as her employees and their families. Things went her way--you can call it luck, God's blessing, whatever--but she continued to work hard to make sure her kids never had to worry about having a roof over their head, as well as to ensure that her employees had a place to come to work every day.
She worked hard and things worked out well. Do we live in a nice house and drive nice cars? Sure. As much as she's sacrificed to earn that, I think she should get to enjoy it. But the really important thing is this: Her children have grown up well-taken care of. They have graduated college and are on their way to making their own path in life. (Not all children of wealthy people live off of trust funds, either, by the way.) Her company now employs almost a hundred people--all of whom can make really nice, secure lives for their families--even in this horrendous economy. When she walks in there every day, she's proud of that above all else. And you know what? She damn well should be.
Despite what the popular opinion of rich people and the tax situation is--yes, even under a Republican administration--she pays an insane amount of taxes. And despite an inevitable tax increase for the wealthy if a Democrat is elected, she is a registered Democrat. Financially, it would be more beneficial to her to vote Republican, but she is a strong believer in Democratic social and foreign policies--and what she knows is right means more to her than how much she can put in her bank account.
So yeah. God bless rich people--because some of them had to work their fingers to the bone and sacrifice a lot to get there. God bless rich people--because if they didn't have the drive to go out there and do what they do, there'd be less available opportunity for everyone else. (And I include myself in "everybody else," by the way--there is no way I could ever start a company. Period. I'm an English teacher. It's just not my world.) Whereas there are some corrupt rich folks, there are also those who are not doing what they do for personal gain--with hard work (and a good shuffle of the cards), sometimes it just works out that way.
Ethrdg

And actually...now that I've had time to sit down and watch the entire interview (thus seeing the "rich people" comment in context... Remember context, people?), she was saying "God bless rich people because we're going to be paying even more taxes, and we're happy to, because that will benefit our country and future generations."
How are you going to argue with that? "Damn you, rich people, for paying large amounts of taxes that fund our government programs that help those who are less fortunate?" And the rich who vote Democrat are even WILLING to pay more! Give me a break.
Oh--and by the way, in case no one has noticed: Obama isn't exactly uh, NOT rich, either. Just because Hillary mentioned it and he didn't doesn't make it go away. So he's worked hard and had luck smiling on him, as well--good for him.
