Sorry, but I don't think the comparison works. If Hillary were the nominee right now, and Corsi put out a hit book on her, you'd better believe it would be a bestseller. Doesn't matter if the Hillary camp leaked the book to someone or did some other backroom smear job, the book would sell. All the cable stations would be talking about the book, whether it's charges about Bill's continued infidelity, his ties to Ron Burkle, Bill's pardons of Weather Underground terrorists, etc. will damage Hillary's campaign.
The heat of a general election is a lot different than the summer before primary season. The Hillary camp's tactics wouldn't be any more successful than Obama's. I will say that both strategies are light years better than Kerry's, however.
What Obama should do next is offer a one-page PDF printup explaining why Corsi's book is full of smears and lies, and have supporters print them up and place them in copies of the book at their local bookstores. That would be a pretty good use of the grassroots to counter the book's "popularity".

Best thing the Bizzy Beavers on the Obama Campaign are doing: spotlighting Jerome Corsi, Ph.D.'s scuzzy background and extensive slime trail. Anybody who has to have "Ph.D." trumpeted on the book cover in order to "authenticate" him is, ipso facto, a dick.

Whoever the Democratic nominee was, these bottom feeders would have put out a book with falsehoods and exaggerations. This is the ONLY way they can bring the Democrat down, because they cannot win on their achievements and boast of any kind of success, for the last 7 years. Most folks, including the media, know that these are lies, because the last attack book on Kerry, proved to be false, and it cost him many votes, resulting in another term for the war criminals. Matlin, is a disgusting woman, and should be tarred and feathered. She knows deep down inside, that these filthy lies should not be published, but she loves her party, more than the country, and she loves money too. We should remember that she supported Cheney all these years, and obviously knows where all the bodies are buried, and yet, she continues with her loyalty to party and the war criminals. I am glad that the Obama team has put out this 40 page rebuttal, but the question is who will read it, and change their minds? These scumbags are Masters of distortion and vile attacks.

I disagree. The rumors about Hillary are not nearly as heated as the ones about Obama, nor are they systematically spread via email. Many of them are a decade old and not nearly as insidious as religious attacks. In a way, it is good that Corsi is getting attention as long as someone representing Obama is there to smack him down. This way the lies are linked to nuts like Corsi. Most people who send around those Obama smears would be horrified by anyone who thinks that the government was involved in 9/11. The campaign has a golden opportunity to discredit some of these lies by having a visible target, Corsi, to discredit all these claims for any non-rabid person that may get that email. Even Nedra Pickler mocked Corsi's other beliefs in her article on the subject. Obama has provided the media with an easy rebuttal that they are forced to use. I think the Obama strategy is sound.

I'm hope Team Obama can pick up a few of the Clinton people who were good at that sort of thing.
Considering all the scandals Bill and Hillary have been involved in, it's amazing they were never called out on any of them during the primaries, yet Obama almost lost because of a couple pretty minor league controversies.

I'd like to make just two points. The first is that the Clintons have had years and years of experience dealing with this sort of thing, and they have dozens of supporters in the New York publishing world who can come to their assistance. Obama has neither the friends in high places or experience dealing with these books. The second point is that I'm beginning to feel that no matter what Obama says or does on literally anything, he is in a damned if you do or damned if you don't situation. If Obama had been able to exert pressure to get this filthy book suppressed or shoved into a warehouse somewhere and the fact got out, it would be turned against him. He has to fight it in the best way he can, but I do wish more highly placed Democrats would come out to advise him and to fight for him.
