AMERICAblog: Coalition calls for sweeping changes in future presidential debates

I agree. The way the debates were handled was horrible this year. What ever happened to the League of Women Voters running the debates?

Norquist is one of the most evil mf-ers ever. If he is involved - do not trust it. Of course, the debates are a scam, the public is poorly served. They are not good debates in any traditional sense.
What I would really like to see is a non-partisan panel who would have to approve any presidential ads, either for the campaigns, the national committees or the PACs that would demand to see proof for claims made. The intention or implication of an attack ad would be monitored too. And if the facts did not check out, the ads would not be approved. Wouldn't that be something?
There are so many ads running that are patently untrue or misleading that get on the air. And as much as I would like to think the American voter is smart enough to know they are bogus, the aren't and they won't.

OT - but still on calls for sweeping change... McCain listens to the right-wing pundits and dog whistles the base, and the rest of the country turns its collective back! yeah.
Joe the Plumber: the Toledo Blade is aggressively on this fraud's ass (all hail local media!): real plumbers in Ohio are outraged! I say: since he's got a huge platform today to talk trash about Obama (and the desperate McCain is hitching the Straight Talk Express to this tool' s star), he's fair game...
How about getting rid of the debates altogether. What have they ever really provided except for media excitement and profit, waiting for a candidate to say something stupid for the history books. Are we voting for whoever is more telegenic? Fortunately that is in the Dem's favor this time but hasn't been in the past: Carter/Reagan, Mondale/Reagan, Dukakis/Bush I, Gore/Bush II, Kerry/Bush II.

Arguably the debates are THEY most important thing in some peoples eyes. Be realistic about it, a POTUSs job is primarily as a symbol, and symbols need to be seen and be able to connect in order to be effective. We can say how the "issues" are the important thing, but by-and-large I daresay that the character and demeanor of a POTUS is far more important to gauging their ability to be an effective leader.
Think of it this way, most people don't read political platforms and position papers and they DO vote for the guy that gives them the warm fuzzy.

Grover Norquist isn't in hiding? Given the current state of affairs, I figured a mob with a bathtub would be hunting him down by now.

After last night’s debate (with apologies to Budd Schulberg’s On the Waterfront):
Act III, Scene 6 - PLACING THE BLAME
Int. Hofstra University Debate Hall – Night
Deserted. Bob Scheiffer is gone. The people and media types are gone. Barack and Michelle are gone. Cindy McCain is gone. In a darkened dressing room, only George Bush and John McCain remain. Tension and the threat of violence in the air.
Bush Look, kid, er, old man, I - how much you weigh, John? When you weighed one hundred and sixty-eight pounds you were beautiful. You coulda been another Billy Conn, and that skunk you got for a campaign manager, he brought you along too fast.
McCain It wasn't him, George, it was you. Remember that night in the Senate you came down to my dressing room and you said, "Kid, er, old man, this ain't your night. The country’s going for the price on Obama." You remember that? "This ain't your night"! My night! I coulda taken Obama apart! So what happens? He gets the title shot on January 20th outdoors in D.C. and what do I get? A one-way ticket to Palooka-ville! You was my President, George, you shoulda looked out for me a little bit. You shoulda taken care of me just a little bit so I wouldn't have to take them dives for the short-end money.
Bush Oh I had some bets down for you. You married that beer heiress. You saw some money.
McCain You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it. It was you, George.
