AMERICAblog: Cokie Roberts smears Obama again for trip to "exotic" Hawaii

  • Clancy · 1 year ago
I heard this crap this AM as I was waking up. Horrible way to start my day. I grew up on the west coast and had many friends in college from Hawaii. There's nothing exotic about it or its people. It's got some great year-round weather, and some wonderful natural wonders, but so do many places in the U.S., and you don't ever hear them described as "exotic."

What is wrong? She's an ignorant Republican operative....didn't the stupid name clue you in? She's one notch removed from Buffy or Amber!

"I think it's absolutely disgusting for us yet again to be playing this "who's more un-American" game and dragging down an entire US state along with it."

On a supposed Democratic talk show! I'm telling you, we need more boycotts, every sponsor of these propaganda shows should suffer, if we actually want change that is. Otherwise, Progess, as in progressive Government will continue to be lost to

Oh, Cokie darlin'! Stop inhaling the fumes of your South Carolina magnolia blossoms and get a fucking clue. This is a perfect example of why the major media needs to be smashed into itty-bitty pieces. Thank goodness for the Internet - you know, the place that has "the Google" and all those blogs that Miss Cokie refuses to read.
  • judybrowni · 1 year ago
    Bitch.

And I'm being restrained, here. She really has worked hard at deserving the "c word."
  • Sven · 1 year ago
Wonder where Cokie is from and what her family background is? I wrote a little rant about it today at Daily Kos:

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/11/10626/6...

Almost seems like Cokie is a little conflicted about her past.
  • 1970cs · 1 year ago
Cokie is from one of the large houses in the Garden District of New Orleans. One of the ones that has an 'exotic' household staff.

Her maiden name is Boggs, the federal courthouse in NOLA is in her family name, if that tells you anything.
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
Do you know anyone, rich or poor, anywhere in the world who would NOT want a vacation in Hawaii?
  • bluestockton · 1 year ago
Every time someone wins a big lottery prize and a reporter asks "What are you going to do with all that money?" the answer is NOT "I'm going to Disney World." It's "I'm gonna take the wife to Hawaii."
  • SINGING_TROLL · 1 year ago
Well, Hawaii IS a tolerant place. I imagine her diatribe would be much the same were he vacationing in San Francisco or Ann Arbor.

I'll second the c-word thing. That word pops into mind every time I hear her anyway.l...
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
She is a sicko, and has been spouting crap like this for years, including when she was on npr. Of course, msm is completely insane (including npr often enough when it comes to poitics), imo, so this is 'normal' for them, really.
  • Hagioscope · 1 year ago
I have to agree, that is pretty elitist.

Why can't Obama just go to his sprawling ranch or to some family compound like an ordinary politician? What's with this guy anyway? Where are his $500 loafers and his military academy education via Daddy the Admiral?
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago
unlike the McCains, he has ONE real home, in a real neighborhood. He can't just go hang out at one of his other 8 houses.

oh for f-ck's sake. the media works my nerves. stop giving this witch airtime.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
I mentioned this earlier on another post.
Last night, ABC Extreme Makeover was in Hawaii.
I didn't realize the amount of poverty in Hawaii.
I can see that I would not know of the poverty in Hawaii since I've never been there... but for a smart well traveled woman like her to conjure up an imagine the Hawaii is some exoctic fantasyland is just clearly showing she is a RIGHTWING TOOL.

John McCain spends a lot of time in Orange County, CA. Now there is a place that is much more lavish and drooling with money and "out of the norm" of normal people.
  • interlude · 1 year ago
hawaii's economy is tourist based...all such places have more than average poverty: New Orleans, Las Vegas, Miami, Atlantic City, etc

  • Busboy · 1 year ago
As I recall, Cokie is the daughter of a prominent but deceased Louisiana politician. She married the uglyest man in North America; but he always seemed like a pretty stable guy. All I can think is "latent racism"? Or, maybe, like many abortion minded women, she thinks that it was Hillary's turn at the trough; no matter what.
  • bluestockton · 1 year ago
Her father is Hale Boggs, a Congressman who disappeared while a passenger on a private plane flying over Alaska. Her mother, Lindy, was elected to his seat and held it for 10 years or more before she retired. Hale and Lindy were Democrats.
  • Piehole · 1 year ago
Roberts is just such a tool. She's one of those on the list entitled "Your Voice And Belief Systems Make Me Want To Rip My Ears Out". Others include Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Coulter, etc. Just such a smug certainty and sense of entitlement about this, that and everything.

    Please ... take early retirement.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
I just saw this on wekipedia:
Her daughter, Rebecca Roberts, also serves as an NPR correspondent and sometimes hosts Talk of the Nation and Weekend America.

Wow, she gets to spew her Right Wing talking points where daughter works.

I need some information. What would be a good email address at ABC to rant and rave about this ignorant woman? Bottom line: It's all about race, and the need to paint Obama as not being like "one of them".

Geeze: it's already an entry on Weikpedia:

For instance, on August 10, 2008 on ABC she brought up the piercing question of why Barack Obama would travel to Hawaii and not Florida. In displaying her geographic prowess, she conceded Hawaii was a state, but wondered how a presidential candidate would travel to such an exotic place and not Florida; of course, it must also be pointed out that Barack Obama was born and raised in Hawaii, and his sister and grandmother still live in that state.

Nothing like shilling for the GOP on Weikipedia
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
I just updated the entry to reflect this morning's NPR appearance.
  • Zorba · 1 year ago
What the heck is the matter with her? Hawaii's a state (and a beautiful one- I absolutely fell in love with it when we visited a few years ago), Obama was born there and has relatives there. He's not supposed to visit the state where he was born and raised? I would like to see the Governor of Hawaii and its United States Senators and Representatives screaming about this.

Last time I was there, Cokie, Hawaii took my American dollars as their standard currency!!!

Cokie is just plain racist like most Republican shills.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Devoutly Catholic Cokie Roberts, who used to say "Oh, I saw you at Church last Sunday" to various officials on the news shows, is probably saying exactly what the good cardinal who exorcised the NBC building after Tim Russert had his heart attack tells her to say.

Yes, I do think RCs are that malicious.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Cokie is saying if you have darker skin or almond shaped eyes, and you are an American, you are foreign and NOT to be trusted!

Greetings Cowboy! The Bush Administration has taken control of NPR and PBS. They put one of their minions in there to bump Moyers out of his show and succeeded. Finally when Congress found out what a corrupt man this was, they ousted him and finally got Moyers back in place, BUT they hold tight reigns throughout both venues.

  • interlude · 1 year ago
Cokie is just following the GOP smear campaign, dehumanizing Obama ...
Obama is exotic, different, foreign, black
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
It takes me back to the debates in the Fifties over admission of Hawaii to statehood. Southerners saw Hawaii as too different, too far away, lacking American values, etc. It was really about racial prejudice. Too many brown and yellow people there. Congressmembers from The Old South were the primary opponents and Cokie is from Louisiana and now (which?) Carolina.
But the same southerners wanted Alaska for its natural resources, so both states were admitted at the same time.
No doubt Cokie grew up hearing the ugly southern arguments.
  • Zorba · 1 year ago
The racism was a lot of it, Hawkseye, but it wasn't the only reason. The resistance to Hawaii's admission that was not about racism was about sugar. The South produced sugar from sugar cane, and a lot of the Western states were producing sugar from sugar beets, and they also were opposed. The sugar-producing states didn't want the competition from Hawaiian sugar. Racism is huge, of course, but economics is also huge.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
Thanks for pointing that out. I had forgotten all about the sugar.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
hawkseye: Roberts certainly ought to have become more intelligent and less racist by now. Don't try to excuse the absurdity of her comments.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
Hi, Ron, I did not mean to imply that Cokie should be excused. Racism is not excusable. But there are reasons for it to consider. I think she and I and you are products of our backgrounds, and while some can change, many can't.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
Hawksey: If Cokie is incapable of change she ought be labeled for what she
still is-a racist. A journalist ought not be excused for racism. Ron

Cokie Roberts is insufferable. I've sent comments to ABC (using the link below, it is very quick) and NPR, where they are currently begging for $$ on our local station.

Cokie is just repeating the Rove/Right-Wing faxed talking points of the day, which means she's not just a fool, but a GOP tool as well. Bob Cesca has found more Hawaii-as- "exotic"-locale water carriers:

    TNR's Michael Crowley:
But if Obama’s being smeared as a highfalutin celebrity who is somehow “other” and distant from the American heartland, is Hawaii really the ideal vacation destination? It sounds trivial but such things can resonate...

    And the Politico:
“For somebody who has been called ‘elitist,’ going to Hawaii is not exactly going against type,” [Douglas Schoen, a pollster for Clinton’s reelection campaign] said. “I would rather have him going to national parks.”
  • interlude · 1 year ago
    i emailed This Week:

on the show this past sunday Cokie referred to the Obama's vacation to Hawaii as "exotic". that was a slam on Obama, and unnecessary...it only props up the McCain campaign line of trying to paint Obama as unAmerican.
the fact is Obama has family in Hawaii.
Cokie is from Louisiana, attended college at Wellesley and now lives in South Carolina...isn't her saying Obama's Hawaii vacation exotic a bit of the pot calling the kettle black?
  • maggiePA08 · 1 year ago
The pot calling the candidate black! I think you have just answered your own question.
  • nsr · 1 year ago
It's more dog-whistle stuff. The people who support McCain are incapable of thinking of him as a rich elitist-- the idea just bounces off. Against Obama, it reinforces what they already believe, because any black man who wants to be president, by definition, is some kind of self-styled aristocrat who doesn't know his place. And I'm sure Cokie is consciously playing to this.

Wow, the way that they are talking about Hawaii it must cost a lot just to get there and only the super rich must go there.

Cokie has a beach mansion in "arrogantly shabby" Pawleys Island just south of Myrtle Beach so I guess she's now become an expert. To describe her neighborhood, she's just down the street from Ollie North. That's why Obama is not vacationing down there.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
Sounds like anyplace other than "Crackerville" would be exotic for Cokie...
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
You know if he did choose some other place to vacation these same asshats would be bashing him for not visiting his grandmother who raised him... and questioning his "family values"...

You guys keep forgetting that they are PROPAGANDISTS and their job is to keep the current power structure in place, in order to do that they HAVE to spin and lie.... They are currently in overdrive hissyfit mode trying to keep folks distracted.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
sukabi1 has the Republican desperation down pat. This desperation is probably rooted in the reality that Obama's lead is far greater than the polls want you to believe. There simply can't be too many fools in this country after the past 8 years of Republican disasters.

  • Rufus · 1 year ago
Cokie should be dipped in a barrel of poi.
  • eaprez · 1 year ago
Although she did not articulate the point well - I think the point she was trying to make is that to most ordinary working class American's - Hawaii is not a place they will ever get to see. It's not a vacation destination for 'regular' folk. I'm not saying 'regular folk' don't go to Hawaii - I'm just saying that for most ordinary American's trying to put gas in their cars - Hawaii is not a vacation destination they consider and so I think the point she was trying to make is that if he is trying to portray himself to the steel belt workers that he's one of them - that this was an odd choice for him to show that. I don't agree with her point - he does after all have family there - but I think her point is somewhat valid - is that he may be judged on the appearance rather than the substance.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
I guess vacationing in any 1 of your 9 homes is more "ordinary", more "working" class. Her point was clear, he is uppity and he should prostrate himself in front of the media to get their approval before he makes any decisions on where he should go. Cokie should questions McCain on being a bigamist, on dumping his first wife and children to marry the millionairess. Cokie should chase down the lobbyists who are deeply involved in his campaign and who own him lock, stock and stinking loafers.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
eaprez proves that you can attempt to justify any absurdity if you set your " mind " to it. So, now " ordinary working-class Americans" and " regular folk" don't go to Hawaii. eaprez ought to rethink her justification of the absurdity before making her own absurd comments.
  • eaprez · 1 year ago
    and ron071 proves he/she can't read.
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
That's funny - I thought the guy in the next cube over who just got back from Hawaii was a regular guy. I guess Italians from New Jersey are a lot more exotic than I thought.
  • darling_democrat · 1 year ago
When I was in high school, I financed a trip to Hawaii with the International Club, and my parents didn't pay a dime for it. (Actually, my dad was at a minimum wage job at the time because he was doing "the Lord's work".) We students worked hard selling stuff and doing odd jobs for money for the trip.

I guess it's a good thing nobody told me that "regular" people can't work hard and save money to go on a cool vacation. I would have missed out on a really great experience.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago

I find this all to be such nonsense. Even if Kooky Roberts wants to say it's this exotic place (an actual US state), the built-in thing that cannot be ignored is that Obama lived in Hawaii and that he has said that they will be spending some time with his grandmother while there.

This characterization of Obama's trip to Hawaii is utterly rediculous and is only something I'd expect from the desperate McCain camp who have been throwing anything and everything out there in hopes that something will stick.

  • Kealani · 1 year ago
In your rush to remind Cokie that Hawaii is part of the United States, don't overlook that Hawaii is only part of the United States because of the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian government by US Businessmen backed by US marines. In addition, we became a state not just over the objections of racist southern sugar growers, but also of many Native Hawaiians. By that time, however, our political voice was incredibly weakened by fifty years of colonial administration as well as the influx of assimilation minded immigrants from Asia and settler colonials from the mainland. Obama's family is an example of this settler colonialism, and thought I'd back him over McCain everyday, his (and your) claims surrounding the Americaness of Hawaii is essential to denying the colonial past and present of the islands.

So on the behalf of many of the brown people you are defending against Cokie, thanks, but no thanks.

Oh brother, what an idiot this woman is. We're from Kansas and we go to Hawaii often for vacation. We have many Kansas friends who vacation in Hawaii.
