AMERICAblog: Cokie thinks the Netroots will be upset if Hillary gets Sec of State

  • Damned_at_Random · 1 year ago
I like the symbolism- the Clintons were well liked internationally, esp in light of the last 8 years. And she was Senator of one of the states attacked on 9-11. She proved during the general election that she is a team player. She is hard working and would be an advocate for State taking a stronger role in unfucking the Iraq occupation IMO
  • stefanzo · 1 year ago
Off hand, it sounds like a great idea to me. I've read/heard talk about how "other people" might not like it (e.g. Clinton supporters might feel it was a demotion), but I have yet to actually see anyone object.
  • RitornaVincitor · 1 year ago
Thanks, scuri. I appreciate your viewpoint. I personally would have preferred to see Hillary as some kind of Health Care czar in the Obama administration, or free to pursue that objective as a Senator, because that cause is her greatest passion. She has the potential to become a great Senator in the mold of Ted Kennedy. What I really don't want to see is a rebirth of all the ugly tensions that existed between Obama supporters and Hillary supporters in the Primary. It seems to me Hillary supporters have done a magnificent job of putting all that behind and turning their focus on Obama. I would be very upset to learn that in victory some Obama supporters can not stop attacking Hillary. It certainly won't help the Democratic Party if old divisions reemerge. It certainly won't help Obama's presidency.

Do reporters EVER do research anymore?
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
Perhaps they do, but since when did Cokie Roberts qualify as a reporter?
  • DorothyGale · 1 year ago
Netroots is obviously some thirty year old commie living in his mothers basement with a computer and a connection to the Internets who gives millions of dollars to libruls only. All politicians must float trial balloons before Netroots or suffer his mighty wrath.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
I prefer Bill Richardson as Secretary of State, but I think there might be good reason to put Clinton in as Secretary of State so she doesn't become the de facto go to person for criticism of Obama policy in the Senate. She will be implementing Obama policy. I agree with John's statement:

"And to some degree, who better than a Democrat who has been hawkish on Iraq to lead the way out of Iraq."

    excellent point.
  • Ksue · 1 year ago
I agree with everything you said. Can't add a thing.

    Thanks.
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
My nephew pointed out a few gaffes of his during the Clinton administration, such as putting his feet on Saddam Hussein's desk, and attempting to use his left hand to shake hands with an Arab ambassador - both major insults in the Arab world. Richardson may be better in another cabinet post.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Believe us, Cokie, the "Netroots" is just happy to see the Bu$hco. team you cheerleaded to defeat GO. Anything is an improvement over that neo-con Condi Rice.
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
We were at a restaurant yesterday where we normally have our Saturday morning breakfast. There is a pompous and obnoxious patron who has made it apparent that he voted republican and can not wait to say something disparaging about Obama or anything democratic. I of course can not keep my mouth shut and take the bait. I mentioned that after eight years of this administration one would think he could wait at least until the president-elect was actually in office before he opined what he thought was going to happen in the immediate future. My point is, he was rude about his comments about "us" making the bad choice of having Hillary Clinton as Sec. of State. I think it bothers the republicans much more than any democrat.
  • Mike_in_the_Tundra · 1 year ago
If it bothers the repugs, I say go Hillary!
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
Agreed. I have no problem at all with her being Sec. of State and welcome them choosing her and if it bothers the republicans, all the better. I'm rather tired of their input any ways. They've run the show essentially for the lats twelve years, and I've heard enough from them. They need to get out of the way if they won't join in helping Obama bring this country around and for the good of this country. Just STFU!
  • eagleye · 1 year ago
Hillary as SOS? No thank you. I have zero respect for HRC after her shameful behavior in the primary campaign. She got caught flat-out lying at least four times about her flight into Bosnia-- why are we now willing to set the bar so low for Cabinet officers? Isn't a decent character part of the job requirements? Have we forgotten her unprincipled machinations as she tried to steal the votes from Michigan? I can't believe that she is even under consideration for the postion. Further, she has been an outspoken advocate and supporter of Bush's war in Iraq. Anyone who is on the wrong side of that one has no business being anywhere near American foreign policy. Hillary Clinton is not the change I voted for.
  • ezpz · 1 year ago
    Excellent points, all of them.
    I'm in total agreement.

And let's not forget her "obliterate Iran" comments that she repeated several times. Those words, threatening genocide, went against international law and could have/should have gotten her thrown out of the Democratic Party:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ben-cohen/hillary...

"...It is incredible that public debate regarding Hillary Clinton's threat to annihilate Iran centers around campaign strategy rather than international law. I have been scouring the mainstream media to find anything criticizing Clinton's remarks for their illegality, but can find nothing other than comments like 'Clinton's tough talk on Iran' (taken from ABC News)..."

Obama wants diplomacy. An important and powerful post such as SoS should transcend politics and be based on qualifications, of which grace, tact, diplomacy are vital.
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
well said. you're reminiding me of all the nasty crap she was all about during the campaign. there simply has to be many, many people more qualified and trustworthy.
  • gymnjim · 1 year ago
Cokie Thinks, Really. When did that start.

Cokie's opinion, as that of most of the talking heads, would be of some value if she ever did any research. I just putter around on the blogs from time to time. Seems about 80 20 in favor from my observations.
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
Remember when Cokie literally laughed at the notion of people giving up dining out in order to donate small amounts of money to the Obama campaing?

She's sooooooo out of touch with reality.
  • ekwhite · 1 year ago
Cokehead Roberts just can't resist trying to stir up controversy where there is none. I haven't seen any major outcry on the blogs about Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. I personally don't have any strong feelings one way or the other about her as Secretary of State.
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
Regarding Cokie - whatever. Another opinion. She's too milk toast for my liking. No real conviction in any opinion.

Regarding Hillary - I agree with John.

OT - Was there ever a posted discussion on loans to domestic auto companies or did I miss it??? Tomorrow?
  • RitornaVincitor · 1 year ago
I'm sorry John to have to say this, but your comments on Hillary are reminding me of why you were opposed to her in the first place. Do we really want to take a giant step backwards and dredge up the Clinton's failure to take you seriously when they were in the White House? Do we really want to reignite the divisions in the Democratic Party that exploded in the bruising Primary fights? Or do we want to move forward into the new Obama era united?
  • ezpz · 1 year ago
Cokie disqualified herself as a credible pundit when she called Obama '"exotic". After that, nothing she says can or should be taken seriously.
  • Mighty · 1 year ago
The only thing I can think of that being Sec. of State would do for Sen. Clinton would be to improve her foreign policy credentials for a future run at the Presidency. Other than that why should she take it? She has much more influence in the Senate.
  • cole3244 · 1 year ago
i have no problem with sen clinton being sec of state because she is more qualified than most and also is a professional, as she showed after the primary, but i do have a problem with those like cokie being taken seriously as a journalist when her claim to that description had as much to do with her station in life as to her hard work and competence as a reporter, and i think some of her statements over the years bear that out imho.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
cokie and lady lynn de redneck remind me of each other...

haughtily self-important and so perfectly above the teeming masses of *shudder* the commoners, they are as pathetically clueless as they sound.
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
I find shillary somewhat meeting that description also...
  • dad · 1 year ago
    poor old cokie.

    strip lieberman.

    bring in Hillary.
  • elRey · 1 year ago
Amid all the Hillary bashing during the primaries (okay, some of it was justified), I was really impressed at how on-message she can be, how well she thinks on her feet and generally how incredibly smart she is. I want a cabinet FULL of really smart people who can pronounce "nuclear"!!!

I think Hillary will do a fantastic job. Mr. Obama will be her boss, and she would represent his policy very well, and be a persuasive negotiator, unlike Condoleezza Rice, who never made a deal with anyone.

Cokie "Hawaii is too exotic" Roberts is consistently wrong, and these comments only prove that point.
  • MGBYG · 1 year ago
Regarding the primary season and the election, I don't really know if I am more pissed off at HRC or Joe the Senator.

If the Dems show some spine and take away JtS's gavel, maybe that'll defuse my anger enough to back HRC...but I doubt it.

So BHO thinks he needs to be a modern-day Lincoln and bring in his rivals....sounds a little too cheeky to me. Wait, I have an idea:

Bring in the smartest fucking people into the room (this, tautologically, disallows politicians) from all over the public and private sector. Give them a pinch-hitter politician assistant to help wind their way around the halls or DC, but enough of Richardson, Clinton (both), Kerry, and every other has-been-politician(-turned-lobbyist) with a 'D' by their name.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
I laughed aloud when schoolmarm Cokie mentioned "netroots"!
The Sunday morning clowns are consistant in not having clue #1...
So if the financial crisis caught everyone by surprise and everyone, now, has an opinion how it happened what exactly has changed except for tons more public money down the memory hole???
Remember, for every Tab A there is a real or imagined Slot B.
  • elizabethcostello · 1 year ago
Cokie Roberts is frequently wrong on the substance of most political issues, and I really wish she would retire to her farm or wherever and stop her mindless babbling, but she is one of the Village's senior aristocrats so we are stuck with her. Perhaps ignoring her once and for all would be the way to go, no?
  • bejammin075 · 1 year ago
As someone who detested Hillary during the primary, I'd be totally fine with her at State. In retrospect, it was good that Hillary was tough, and threw the kitchen sink at Obama with Ayers and Wright non-issues. By the time the general election came around, those issues were "used up" and had no impact when McCain tried to use them.

Although my preference would be that Bill Richardson be Sec of State, Hillary would probably do great at it.
  • HelenaMontana · 1 year ago
While I would never want Clinton as president, I think she'd make an excellent Secretary of State. Her only drawback, really, is that self-indulgent bozo she's married to. He simply can't be trusted to not embarrass the administration, and, if Hillary Clinton were the Secretary of State, he'd be under VERY close observation by the wingnuts. He was, after all, their favorite target for 8 years, and he will obligingly serve himself (and his wife, and the Obama administration) up to his critics on a platter. He can't help it -- it's like Tourettes with him.
  • ComradeRutherford · 1 year ago
In general I am against Obama pulling anyone out of the House or Senate. I want the full array of Democrats ready to go the moment the next Congress is sworn in. I don't want to have them at a disadvantage because they're waiting for a Governor to appoint the replacement.

If Obama is to risk such a delay, I want it to be for a really good reason. I think Senator Clinton might be better replacing Reid, then Sec. of State.

Reid and Pelosi have GOT to go, as they refused to do anything with their majority status over the last two years. Reid licked the boots of the GOP minority and Pelosi stonewalled all accountability of Bush that was demanded by We, The People.

In agreement with elRay, EVERYONE in Obama's Cabinet MUST pronounce Nuclear correctly. That has the incidental bonus of driving Conservatives crazy, they hate correct English. (as evidenced by Obama's correct pronunciation of EErak (not I-rack) and Pahkeestahn (not Pack-i-stan)).
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
isn't it pretty disgusting that people in leadership positions can't say f-ing 'ih-rahn', but say 'eye-ran'
really pisses me off - it's just a sign of ingorance or you don't care or both.. it's not about sounds that don't exist in english. Bush 1 was the worse example. figures.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
They want to sound like Crackers. Think it makes them more lovable to the hicks who elect them.
  • ComradeRutherford · 1 year ago
My wife noticed that you can identify an American's position on the Conservative's wars in the Middle East by how they pronounce the names of the nations we have occupied.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
I think your wife is correct.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
    Just my opinion:
Reid and Pelosi are reflections of their caucuses. If the caucuses elected new leaders, they would be similar types.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Internet + grassroots = "netroots." According to Wikipedia, "Netroots is a recent term coined to describe political activism organized through blogs and other online media, including wikis and social network services. "

I didn't know that. I thought we were just blogging.

Anyhow, Cokie got it right but I bet she had a fast forward tutoring from the NBC sloganeers after the "exotic Hawai'i" fiasco and the election of a person of the negro persuasion. That wasn't supposed to happen in front of well-behaved white women like Cokie Roberts.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
I should add that I'm fine with Hillary as Secretary of State. In fact, I like it. In a netrooting way, you understand.
  • dances_with_beagles · 1 year ago
Would be interesting to know precisely what Cokie's source was for determining the Netroot's opinion. I follow all the major blogs and haven't seen strong opposition. Does Cokie consider a Dailykos diary which can be written by anyone anonymously as the Netroot's opinion? Or was this Drudge's opinion of what the Netroot's opinion should be? Probably so. She read it on the internet so it has to be true.
  • HelenaMontana · 1 year ago
She had no source. She was just bloviating.
  • cmccbald · 1 year ago
Cokie knows about as much about the netroots as George Will knows about the Great Depression.
  • freshpaint · 1 year ago
Netroots backed Obama == netroots hates Hillary.

    Call it a reverse-PUMA.

Cokie wouldn't know a netroot if she tripped over it. Have never understood why she's "respected".
  • JD_Rhoades · 1 year ago
I think it's a bad idea, but I wouldn't say I'd be "upset" by it. My reaction would be more, "well, okay let's hope I'm wrong."
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
If I had soros' money, I would try to start a real sunday talk show. call it the 'netroots' show ;). and have real, substantial debate over an hour or more format. any politician showing up would know they can't skate through it. it would dominiate the ratings, imo..

I would like to see a list of alternates from shilary, pretty sure I would prefer someone else.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
I hope you get your wish re money and a real Sunday news talk show.
    We could sure use one.
  • BroD · 1 year ago
I'm ok with HRC as SOS in an Obama administration. I also think she deserves props for her efforts on behalf of Obama/Biden.

If I say, "Cokie doesn't get it." do I also have to say, "The Earth revolves around the Sun."?
  • steve303 · 1 year ago
Personally, I am opposed to Clinton as SoS. Not because I think she she would be bad -- in fact, I am sure she would be adequate. I do not believe, however, she would be the best choice: she has little to no real skills in diplomatic quarters, nor does she posses a wonkish knowledge of foreign affairs. Additionally, I believe she posses the skills to become a great Senator. Her understanding of domestic affairs and her commitment to reform set her on a historical path. She could be the great statesman of the Senate, serving long after an Obama administration has left Washington.

Oh, and as for 'Cokie' -- this is the same woman who held strong to the Republican line that tax cuts increase revenues, and reiterated the Cheney connections between Iraw and Al Qaida... Her credibility, in any area, seems suspect.
  • mdekker · 1 year ago
Love the idea of Hil-dog as SoS. I can't think of a better candidate honestly. As much as I grew to despise her during the primary season, she would be great in this job. I mean, it can't be as hard as running a campaign right?......
  • EdA · 1 year ago
Although I too would prefer Bill Richardson, who certainly has VERY significant foreign policy experience combined with energy experience, which is going to be increasingly important, and is Hispanic to boot, I have no problem with Hillary Rodham Clinton as Secretary of State, although I don't know why she would want it. If she were to run for Senate Majority Leader (or if almost anyone else were to), I would support her enthusiastically.

In terms of Cokie Roberts, well, she lost it entirely when she thought that the idea of Barack Obama's spending his vacation visiting his grandmother and some of the people he grew up with was more "exotic" and elitist than going to a fancy beach resort.
  • marxtone · 1 year ago
Hills would be fine - now let's move along.
  • Sand · 1 year ago
My take: If Kissinger and Kyl [you know -- Kyl of the Kyl-Lieberman let's f*ck Iran fame] start pushing for Hills -- then I would hope by now those bells and whistles are going off inside your head.

Also, to push my point even further: If this story is true [interesting if it is]:

"Barack Obama is to pursue an ambitious peace plan in the Middle East involving the recognition of Israel by the Arab world in exchange for its withdrawal to pre-1967 borders, according to sources close to America's president-elect.
Obama intends to throw his support behind a 2002 Saudi peace initiative endorsed by the Arab League and backed by Tzipi Livni, the Israeli foreign minister and leader of the ruling Kadima party..."

    h.t: http://www.boomantribune.com/?op=displaystory;s...

...then IMO Hills would be the last person Obama would want as SoS.

P.S. Hey I like this blog -- you can EDIT :-)
  • Sand · 1 year ago
    Also, remember this story:

    Liebercrats?
    by: Matt Stoller
    http://www.openleft.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=4803

She might still be in debt to some of these people. Pause for thought - I'd say.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
Is our childrens and Cokie learning?

My main problem with Hillary as SOS is Bill. I don't think the media would be willing to separate them, so every time she tried to carry out Obama's policy, reporters would run to Bill and ask him what he thinks about it. He has proven himself more than willing to undermine Obama.

Hillary is a lousy administrator, but she can have deputies do that, and the Foreign Service does the actual diplomacy up to certain levels.

I should think Rethugs on the Hill would be salivating for the opportunity to savage Hill and Bill once more. Is it possible that Obama has that in mind?

So, it's going to be interesting to watch.
  • Bubbles · 1 year ago
I'd prefer a professional. Maybe someone with real experience being diplomatic, and coordinating allies.

I'd prefer Leslie Clark here or at DoD or even both. But I can see where Hillary brings a lot to the table for this particular job. The rest of the world really liked the Clintons.
  • Bubbles · 1 year ago
If there's a problem - can she admit that she's made a mistake and change course?

That was my biggest bug-a-boo about her candidacy.

If you have a command of civics, you know all the policies choices, you make your best guess, and then you implement it. If your best geuss is an informed choice made on a reasonable, rational basis, and it doesn't work then admit and make an adjustment.

Bush couldn't do that because he's implementing ideology. Ideology replaces thinking, and in the absense of knowledge and wisdome replaces all cranial activity.

The ability to not admit you made a mistake, I see as an indication of stupidity.
  • Lilly · 1 year ago
I agree with Marxtone: Hills would be fine - now let's move along.

Cokie can continue to ponder whether or not candidates should visit their ailing grandmothers or vacation with her and all the South Carolina bigots at arrogantly shabby Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
  • richmx2 · 1 year ago
I have no idea what the "netroots" wants, but those of us who cover Latin America think Senator Clinton is arguably the worst possible choice. Her few statements on this part of the world indicate a bellicose willingness to force the same IMF-World Bank-Corporate "neo-liberalism" that destroyed economies here during her husband's administration. It's only by breaking with that "Washington Consensus" that Latin America has turned around, yet Senator Clinton's stance seems to feel those countries that are successfully managing their own economies and destiny are a "threat" to the United States.

Secondly, here in Mexico (your second or third largest source of foreign oil, depending on the month of the year, btw), Mrs. Clinton seems to associate us only with narcotics (the U.S. being the largest buyer) and shows a willingness to continue the existing policies that mean Mexicans die for U.S. consumer habits.

Any Obama choice would be better than what we have now, but foreign policy in the hands of an ambitious amateur with no background in the field, and no real interest in it other than military intervention in the middle east? NO, NO, NO!!!
  • Plummet · 1 year ago
I liked how Cokie pronounced netroots - net roots. Same inflection as gross weight, dirty diaper, or dark roots.
  • sisterfaith · 1 year ago
What Cokie thinks is a lot like what Newt thinks....who gives a damn.

Cokie lost credibility a long time ago......
  • LeftCoastOracle · 1 year ago
I don't have any concerns about Hillary serving as SoS. In fact I think it's smart of Obama to get her out of the Senate where she might oppose him on key issues.

But I don't put much stock in anything Cokie says. In fact I typically don't watch This Week when she's on because she's generally just not informed or reveals an offensive bias.
