Given Japan's reverence for the elderly, I almost expect that to be a career-ending gaffe.

If they lived long enough to be elderly they must have done something right.
>"I apologize if the remarks offended people who are suffering illnesses," Aso said on nationally televised news. Sure sounds like a Bush standard non-apology apology.

Well sailor, Am 60 and I tell you this. Age creeps up on you. You don't even realize before you are even there. I turned 50 and it went down hill from there. I like getting old because its a part of life and death. Even when I was young I always had respect for the elderly. My husband is 7 yrs young than me. Now he is experiencing health problems. He is having seizures and headaches and have run tests after tests still don't know what is causing them. He had retired from the military a few yrs back. He always maintained running 7 miles 3 times a week. Now he can't do that any longer. All I can tell you when you hit 40, than 50 all of a sudden you are 60 and you are saying where did the time go. I am heavy, but I don't drink or smoke and I have to take infussions for iron. But on the whole those are small problems. But what does bug me is when younger people act like you aren't around and you are dumb. Especially when the doctor talks with your child that is with you, like you aren't even there to make the decision. I think its funny. Am 60 but people don't believe me because I don't have rinkles haaaa. I don't care I tell them it took me a long time to get here. I am happy.

this might prove that being a moron isn't mutually exclusive to the idiot in chief aka 43, offspring of 41 and barbara, or maybe cons are just insensitive gubers where ever they graze, the latter is probably more likely.

He's just not very clever. Too many manga comics during the day, and too much drinking in the evening. He's misread things recently in official statements that I, as a fairly literate foreigner, would be ashamed to misread. I don't think he has the imagination to think through the results of what he lets out of his mouth.

Aso's popularity hovers at around 36%. Did you notice his mention of "rich Jews" as well, and calling Japan's Democratic Party "fascist?" And this guy is a "Liberal Democrat?" Look at his family's past...
In Japan, older people go to the doctor's office nearly every day regardless of their health condition. The waiting room is like a neighborhood community room. Doctor's make money by how many drugs they sell so have an incentive not to turn the often healthy elderly patients away. I see them leave the office with enough drugs to fill a shopping bag. That is no exaggeration. These elderly patients pay almost nothing for the drugs.

You can't take stupid back. I don't understand why people thinking saying your sorry makes it alright. You can also look at this way in our country. The elder have to go to the doctors more often. They have to pay for their medicines. Just think of the people these indurstries employee. I think that stupid presidents remarkes lately have come from Bush and he has spread it to other governments around the world. What a legacy he leaves behind.

The link had a pix of the little dink; he has the unapologetic, smug Gooper look. Surprised he didn't punctuate his gaffe with a hearty, "heh, heh"!
Boy is he in for a big surprise when his irony sandals are delievered.

Well no doubt this comment will be most unpopular but I think the guy has a point. That he said it out loud, seemingly casually, as a person in his position, is his greatest gaffe. It IS true that people who exercise and generally take care of themselves have fewer health problems. It is one of the potential problems of socialized medicine in the US. There are certainly people with real illnesses that they did not bring upon themselves but there are also those who smoke/drink/overeat etc and whose health care costs would be born by all...even those who make smarter choices.
